Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

skeij had a few moments last night that lead to at least one goal, but so did alt and schmidt, reilly. It was an all around bad game for the defense last night. We needed a jake parenteau last night, some one to stay at home. we had terrible coverage in front of our net last night

agreed.

Also we didn't seem to handle their forecheck, they had 2 guys in deep on our D the whole game and 1 just behind those 2 taking away the center (sometimes 3 deep) they need to adjust to that and have a wing come help. That could lead to some odd man rushes for us if they can beat that forecheck.

Just as bad was offensive zone coverage. Not a forward high in the slot to support the strong side D to be found and the result was way too many odd-man rushes.

Good point.

We were "worthless and weak", I hope they dropped down and gave tDon 20. :)

So the early buzz has been that the Gophs are rock solid everywhere put in between the pipes. Who played last night and was that a big part of the issue?

Shibrowski started the game and gave up 4 goals, was hung out to dry on most of them. Wilcox came in and gave up 1 goal (Tech guy comes in alone past our D yet again) the rest of the way.

I would say the D was a big part of what went wrong last night, but the forwards didn't help them much. Tech played a great game and deserved to win.

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

The defense was awful last night. Lots of lazy plays. Goalies were screwed.

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

As an outsider who just watched some highlights, I gotta say, Tech had some pretty goals. Those are tough ones.

What especially shocked me was the Huskies boxed out in front with 3-4 guys consistently defending their net. I don't know how many blocked shots they had, but at one point late in the 2nd the Gophers had twice as many shot attempts as MTU and were still outshot. Absolutely textbook support for Copley last night...he got tons of help and it made a big difference in shutting down the cycle and limiting grade A scoring chances for the Gophs. Tonight will be different though and MG will have the D focused.

Not to minimize the poor play of the D, but MG needs to remind the entire they are on D whenever they don't have the puck. Regardless of the zone.

I also enjoyed the between periods interview with Petan. While interviewing him, the Gopher interviewer referenced how Tech was playing "the best team in the country."

I'm not too big of a semantics hawk, but he said it twice (interjected it awkwardly) which means that he knew what he was doing and it was intentional. He was fishing for Petan to acknowledge awe and respect while interviewing Petan about his awesome goal. Tool.

The Gophers are not the "best team in the country," they are the number 1 ranked team in the country and after only 3 games, there is a big difference between those two things.

Nauseating.

LOL were you really sitting at home dissecting the wording someone gave in an interview to one of your players?

and THEY WERE RANKED NUMBER ONE. yes its early, but THEY WERE RANKED THE BEST TEAM IN THE COUNTRY BY THE PEOPLE THAT VOTE. get over it... "twice interjected it awkwardly" hahahhaa

rather than complain about the wording of the interview, maybe you should be thankful a gopher broadcast included an intermission interview with a tech player, a postgame interview with a tech player, and a post game interview with the tech coach.

i think gopher fans were saying that because 6 of the top 7 scorers returned, and all 6 starting defensemen returned. the problem is, when you sit 2 of those junior defensemen, then all of a sudden you have 2 freshmen (and 1 sophomore defensemen to boot) in the lineup.. so you are passing on depth, experience, and cohesiveness for new incohesive d pairs and inexperienced freshmen.

I realize that you're somewhat new around here.

A few long-time "talking points" around here:

1) The Gophers are always ranked high. They could be (and have been) under .500 and in the top 15.

2) Gopher broadcasts have long been the subject of discussions over how biased they are.

3) Deer ****ing and paint thinner will always be brought up at the start of a Gopher/UW series

4) UW fans will often respond by bringing up football

5) Sioux fans are nazi-loving, native-hating hillbillies who've never seen a real tree and don't know enough to rebuild on higher ground

These are more of an exercise than anyone trying to convince the other of anything.

Round and round it goes. The circle of life.

In terms of being ranked number 1 and being the best team in the nation... What if you are swept (or even if you split) and there is a new #1 next week. Will that team suddenly be the "best team in the nation?" Can it change that fast or will they simply be the new #1 ranked team in the nation?

It's far too early to make that declaration and your TV numbskull had an agenda of sorts. Tell us about it when you're 9-1. At that point in may be true... until then, it's not.

Hope "my" huskies can get the sweep tonight!

gurtholfin- good post..

tech looks very good. they are something to be excited about. i guess i was just annoyed at all the complaining at the broadcast when i thought they did a good job of including tech interviews etc.. maybe even more than they should have considering 90% of the tv viewers are gopher fans.

tech was actually fun to watch. those goals were all well earned, wasnt much garbage in there at all. its a long season, but i dont see why tech wont be in the final 5 and an ncaa appearance if they keep that up. now, can they just get rid of their cue-ball of an assistant coach?

This is true. Tonight will be more of the same approach for Tech. Tech can't afford not to forecheck aggressively because if they sit back, Minnesota will pick them apart. I expect some more odd-man rushes from Minnesota tonight. Hopefully they are limited and the goalie will be up to the task.

Great post but dang I have 3 trees in my yard alone.:)

Since taunting is in the subject line of this thread...

rather than complain about the wording of the interview, maybe you should be thankful a gopher broadcast included an intermission interview with a tech player, a postgame interview with a tech player, and a post game interview with the tech coach.

That's because the media likes talking with... winners. Now bring on game #2.

Great post but dang I have 3 trees in my yard alone.:)

Buzz throughout the Nodak crowd: "Three trees!" "He's got three trees!" "Did he say three?" "I thought there were restrictions!."

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

it's going to be a long season listening to Doug M. Really bad:(. Where oh where is Frank? I don't like Doug's excitement or hyperbole when it's not necessary.
Doug, there's no shot clock in hockey.
