Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.
The Gophers came to Houghton unprepared for the speed game plan of the Michigan Tech University Huskies. What the Gophers saw tonight is NOT the MTU team of year's past. Give credit to 2nd year Coach Mel Pearson for doing an amazing job of changing the culture of hockey at MTU. They were fast, they were focused, they made plays throughout their lineup, swarmed on the puck, played excellent D and Copley gets high marks in nets making some good saves. Overall they were the better team tonight in literally every facet of the game.
Obviously, a disappointing loss for the Gopher's opening game of the WCHA season. They came out with energy for the first few minutes and then it was all downhill from there giving up scoring chances to MTU who scored all 5 goals in the first 2 periods. Gopher passing was subpar, breakouts along the half boards was bad, and the D made several unforced errors giving MTU open shots on goal of which they quickly took advantage. There were very few odd man rushes by the Gophers and overall as a team they were "OUT OF SYNC" tonight (Grade: D).
The adjustment to a smaller ice sheet could have played a minor role, but next season in the BTHC, the Gophers will be the ONLY team with an olympic size sheet, so they better get used to it. THE BIG SHIBROWSKI looked stiff and a bit nervous to me, was victimized by a couple nice plays by MTU/D lapses by MN, but pulling him was the right move by Lucia (Grade: C-). Wilcox's agility seemed a better match for MTU's speed game and he showed some skill in the 3rd on a very good save to stop a sure MTU goal. Overall, the Gophers were severely outplayed by a fired up Huskies squad who came in focused and mentally prepared to knock off the #1 ranked team in the nation. Final: Michigan Tech 5, Gophers 3.
Tomorrow night I would expect to see Wilcox back in the nets and a more adjusted Gopher team ready to even the series. Go Gophers!
