Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

The Gophers and Michigan Tech Huskies open WCHA regular season play tonight, in perhaps the Gophers last trip to Houghton for a long, long time. Both teams are coming off impressive wins and momentum going into this series. Tech always seems to play the Gophers tough, and I expect each team to come flying out of the gate tonight with a lot of energy and physicality.

MTU comes off an impressive display of goal scoring last Sat., their PP netting 3 goals, in an 8-4 triumph over Lake Superior. Although losing top scorers Baker and Olsen, they've returned with nearly 70% of their scoring from the Johnstone bros., Gordic, Furne, Kero, and Pietila. MTU was a much improved team last season anchored by second year coach Mel Pearson, who spent 23 years as an asst. to Red Berenson at Michigan before returning as coach of the Huskies.

The #1 ranked Gophers come into this series with high fan expectations after a series sweep of MSU, outscoring Sparty 12-2. Goalies: THE BIG SHIBROWSKI and Adam Wilcox, with two contrasting styles, will both see action this weekend and will be more severely tested. I would expect to see basically the same core starting lineup as against MSU.

This will be a very physical series. The PP and PK could play significant roles this weekend. A veteran Gopher D looks very solid this year and both Skjei and Reilly have been impressive freshman D thus far. This may be the best D corp we've seen since 2002-03. Offensively, the Gophers have immense depth and talent at every position and looked poised to be a buzzsaw scoring machine this weekend.

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

The Gophers have been practicing at Ridder Arena this week to prepare for MacInnes Student Ice Arena's NHL-sized rink.

“Obviously Mariucci’s a huge rink, and we’ve been practicing over on Ridder, which kind of helps,” junior Nick Bjugstad said. “Personally, I think I like the little rink a little better just because I’m a little bigger-sized.”

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

As much as I love Tech I don't have super high hopes for this weekend, I think we will score and the games may be closer than expected, but I just don't see us beating MN this weekend.

"Do you believe in miracles?"

what I mean of course, is it will be a miracle if the "Golden Gophers" limp out of the shock zone that is the Mac after the weekend with even one lousy point, dragging behind the grim tattered remains of their "best hockey team in the world" arrogance as the locals point and laugh.

Just ask the 2011-12 Denver Pioneers how they liked being first on the menu to open up Tech's WCHA home schedule last year. They came into town looking for a sweep too...

sweeps on the road in the wcha are hard to come by. a split is more likely for the gophs..
