Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.
A very gritty, grind out game tonight before a packed and excited Huskies crowd in Houghton. MTU played hard, but had trouble setting up and controlling the puck and were not as dominant as last night. Credit Copley, who made some great saves to keep the game close. Overall, the Huskies are a much improved team this season and should do some real damage to teams in the WCHA this season.
The Gophers had a few D lapses tonight, but overall had much better puck control, passing and play in both zones (Grade: B+). They scored in every period this weekend, but never played from behind tonight. The real star for the Gophers tonight was Adam Wilcox, sprawling out and making some wild saves giving the Gophers a chance to win (Grade: A). Overall, Wilcox played smart, aggressive and looked very confident in net. MTU pulled Copley with under 2 min. left and laid some intense pressure on at the end, but Adam Wilcox came up with a HUGE game winning save to seal the win and gain a weekend split on the road for the Golden Gophers. Adam Wilcox gets my vote as starter going forward for the Gophers.
I thought the Ambroz/Boyd/Condon line was the best offensive and backchecking line tonight. Boyd was superb as a playmaker, Condon was backchecking all game and had a couple nice shots streaking all over the ice. Seth Ambroz played tough all game pumping in 2 goals including the GWG in the 3rd period with just over 3 minutes remaining.
And congratulations to Coach Don Lucia in banking his 600th win of his coaching career tonight, only the 10th coach in NCAA D1 men's hockey history to reach that milestone. Overall, good road win and weekend split for the Gophers in their last meeting in Houghton for a long, long time.
