Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

Great win tonight, the Gophers played hard all night long and took over in that 3rd period (Tech was gassed). Tech is a good team that has some nice speed and a very solid goaltender, they will be tough to play this year. I would be surprised if they don't have home ice at the end of the year. Good luck the rest of the way Tech.

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

I assumed Tech would be pretty dang good and they didn't disappoint, although I am sure their fans would like to have seen the sweep. I didn't get to watch the game (have it on DVR) and will watch later, but from what I could tell from chat the Gophers had the "better" play but obviously had to work for the win. Both squads should be able to build off this - MTU confirmed they can play with (and beat) anyone and UM confirmed they better work hard if they want to take advantage of their talent.

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

A very gritty, grind out game tonight before a packed and excited Huskies crowd in Houghton. MTU played hard, but had trouble setting up and controlling the puck and were not as dominant as last night. Credit Copley, who made some great saves to keep the game close. Overall, the Huskies are a much improved team this season and should do some real damage to teams in the WCHA this season.

The Gophers had a few D lapses tonight, but overall had much better puck control, passing and play in both zones (Grade: B+). They scored in every period this weekend, but never played from behind tonight. The real star for the Gophers tonight was Adam Wilcox, sprawling out and making some wild saves giving the Gophers a chance to win (Grade: A). Overall, Wilcox played smart, aggressive and looked very confident in net. MTU pulled Copley with under 2 min. left and laid some intense pressure on at the end, but Adam Wilcox came up with a HUGE game winning save to seal the win and gain a weekend split on the road for the Golden Gophers. Adam Wilcox gets my vote as starter going forward for the Gophers.

I thought the Ambroz/Boyd/Condon line was the best offensive and backchecking line tonight. Boyd was superb as a playmaker, Condon was backchecking all game and had a couple nice shots streaking all over the ice. Seth Ambroz played tough all game pumping in 2 goals including the GWG in the 3rd period with just over 3 minutes remaining.

And congratulations to Coach Don Lucia in banking his 600th win of his coaching career tonight, only the 10th coach in NCAA D1 men's hockey history to reach that milestone. Overall, good road win and weekend split for the Gophers in their last meeting in Houghton for a long, long time.:)

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

Harley summarized the weekend pretty well. I just hope this poor showing on Friday isn't an indication that the Gophs will have the same problem that they had last year with winning on Fridays. They don't have the excuse they had last year of a young team. No reason to not be ready for the intensity of WCHA games on Friday. The Huskies out-worked, out-hustled and out-battled the Gophers Friday, but not Saturday. Sure hope Don, Grant and Mike get them ready for the opening face-off in future Friday games (particularly league games).

Also agree the Huskies will be a force to be reckoned with in the WCHA this year. Showed good speed and skill both nights, much more-so than past Tech teams.

You were drinking all day yesterday and last night. Why are you not sleeping? ;)

Sleep is for the weak. Good series and am gonna miss this road trip. I think we drank all the alcohol in Houghton. Fun times. On to next weekend.

(I'm not so sure I should even be participating in the proliferation of this picture)

I believe that the caption for this was "This Is Houghton" when it was originally posted. 9AM, Friday morning, in the parking lot of the Travelodge, after a 5 pitcher (long island iced tea) night, and a morning Lime-A-Rita or 2.

Wait, are you saying SOH has two dicks, or that he is one of two dicks?

It's a line from Sons Of Anarchy that became a running joke, because in the show it was indeed hilarious.

And that pic of bbdl pretty much sums up the weekend. Epic picture.

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

Random thoughts:

While I love Gangnam Style....it probably has been played out with this group. Every night at the bars we played it and danced like no one was watching.
Very fun, very awesome, but the moment has now passed.

"Two dicks!!!!!!"

The Eagle River Inn is a must for any whiskey/scotch drinker. A. Must.

Tech is legit.

Glad to see that all the rookies had a great time, and actually want to go back, even if it's for a random series.

Eye-opening moment for me: there are bars that have NO tap beer. Only cans. 2 of the 3 we hit in MI on the way to Houghton qualify for this status. And their best beer was probably Budweiser or Miller Genuine Draft.

Microwaveable Pork Rinds exist. No, we dared not try them.

We still remain the best tailgating group in the history of college hockey (there might be some arrogance behind that statement).

The MTU fans remain my favorite opposing fanbase. Good people.

Mel Pearson is a real nice guy. Got to talk to him a little before the luncheon on Friday.

Related: when we pressed him to start Jamie Phillips in net, his response was, "I'm NOT going to feed him to the wolves!" (said with a chuckle)

The Gay Bar remains a fun bar. The waitress/bartender/cook (yep, she does it all) is awesome. And where else can you order a bottle of Dom w/pizza of choice for $275?!

Getting cans of KBC right off the canning line to drink at the brewery is a simple pleasure.

I'm gonna miss MN at MTU road trips.

Beautiful weather this weekend. Makes a world of difference.

High scores in gastronomic intelligence.

That goes without saying.

Funny...and as it turned out the Wolfpack had their teeth knocked out on Friday night.;)

Agreed. We were afraid.
Still have to puff out that chest once in a while.
Also agreed. It happens.

And Armadillo mentioned on GPL/Facebook that the Gay Bar's Surf and Turf consists of a tin of sardines and a Slim Jim. Yes, it was ordered (stateofhockey) and he drank the sardine tin juice. Yup.

Brain is mush right now, physical exhaustion has reallllllly set in, so time to call it a night. Great weekend, acceptable hockey, time to look ahead. :)

Re: Gophers @ Tech Road Trip - Planning, Coordination, Taunting, etc.

Gopher tailgate arrogance is well deserved. what a great fan base!!! always good to have you up here, not many appreciate what the UP has to offer (see Gwozdecky, George)

and its always good to know that Minnesotans still know how to spell Minnesota.
