Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I may be completely biased because I was there rooting for the Buckeyes, but the reffing in the 3rd period and OTs were absolutely atrocious. The call on LaRocque to make it 5 on 3 (with Carlson already in the box) and led to a Gophers goal was ridiculous. LaRocque got interfered with/tripped up right before that. I didn't see if LaRocque retaliated but if she did, then you take both because the first one was so blatant I can't believe it wasn't called. And there are waaaaaay too many other examples of absolute shoddy reffing to name. Linesman were alright tonight though, I thought.

Anyway, great freaking game. I'm sad about the outcome because I wanted the Buckeyes to pull it out, but it was a great game by both teams.

I hope there were a few people in attendance who don't get to too many women's games, because this one had a little of everything. A nice game to showcase the sport from an entertainment standpoint. Excellent effort by the Buckeyes, too bad they don't get another game. I think your team has a promising future. And I was thankful every time Spooner left the ice so my heart rate could return to merely high instead of downright dangerous.

I'll agree on the officiating assessment. It was a legit call...on LaRocque I thought...or however literally grabbed and tackled a Gopher player trying to slip by along the boards, but I agree on the missed call just prior...should have been called. I thought there were missed called both ways...too many.

Spoons was on fire tonight, eh? lol. I think I broke something in my knee when she scored her shorty. haha. Yeah, I really wish they had another game. They might get that one. Both teams had chances to bury the winner though. Gophers just were the first to actually do it.

I hope the Gopher football coaching staff was watching the overtimes :D they could learn how to tackle.. from both sides :)

Cool. I took a ton of photos of the OSU-Gopher game. I put them on Facebook but I could find a way to stick them on the regular internet lol.

Forgot to mention, on top of the exciting semi final between Minnesota and Ohio State, I had the bonus honor of meeting Miss Kendall Coyne between the 2nd and 3rd periods. Very nice young lady.

Found this on wcha.com. Love the wording of this sentence and the secret implied meaing of "sh*tty officiating".

Still on the power-play, the Gophers, who have a knack for prompting ill-timed penalties by their foes, did it again, gaining a two-skater advantage, and prompting Francis to get her second goal of the day at 17:25 to tie it 3-3.

I said the exact same thing to a couple members of the Gopher pep band. :D

Facebook isn't on the regular internet??????

Just make a Flickr account and you can make albums for people to view pictures.

Looking ahead, because in another 18 hours it will all be decided and too late to look ahead ...
OK, these are the relevant scenarios.
And just looking at the possible Gopher opponents, because this is our thread ...
If BU & Cornell win
Cornell @ Minnesota/UMD winner
Clarkson @ Minnesota/UMD loser

--------------------
If BU & Clarkson win
UConn @ Minnesota/UMD winner
Harvard @ Minnesota/UMD loser

------------------------
If UConn & Clarkson win

So if I follow, we could host any of Colgate, Connecticut, Cornell, Harvard. From an unfamiliarity perspective, Cornell would rank highest, because the two teams last met in February of 1999 -- we're due. We hosted UConn for a game on the opening weekend in the fall of 2006 when the current seniors were starting their careers, so we are due to see them as well. We saw Harvard last season, Clarkson during this one. So because I like to see different teams, I'd rank my preferences Cornell, UConn, Harvard, Clarkson. This does not mean I think one would be easier to beat than another. Those familiar with recent Gopher history know we are probably headed to OT no matter who we face.

I'm assuming by "saw Harvard", you mean "hosted Harvard", because the team played AT Harvard this season. Still, I think I have to agree with your order of preference for NCAA q'final opponents.

Settle back for overtime

Settle back for overtime

Assessing the likelihood of seeing more than 60 minutes of hockey in this Year of Parity, Exhibit A is Harvard's record against its three likeliest first-round opponents: one one-goal win, two one-goal losses, and three ties!

Oddly, though, as to the likelihood of high- or low-scoring games, in the three games against Minnesota and UNH, both teams combined to generate only one goal, whereas in their three meetings Harvard and Clarkson put in a total of 14.

Yes, I meant from a fan perspective, and I don't think the majority of the our fans made the trip. Of course, there is the internet, but seeing a team only online is a little like trying to get the full impact of an ocean or the mountains from a postcard.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Uggh. :( :( :(

I thought Noora played a decent game. On the three UMD goals...
-- She was hung out to dry by her teammates on the first. She may have overcommitted to her left, but that was a miserable turnover.
-- She was screened by at least three players on the second. I honestly don't know how the puck got through all that traffic. Why the Gophers can't have such luck, I don't know.
-- And I just have to give credit to UMD's Audrey Cournoyer on the third. That took some skill to dig the puck out of her own skates and then bury a wrister as soon as she got it on her stick. Unfortunately, that whole rush started on a Gopher turnover at the UMD blue line, and then nobody picked up Cournoyer at the end.

The only thing I'll say about the officiating is that, if Lick and Elam had done a similar job in a South American soccer game, they'd be running for their lives.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the NCAA selection. BU is already through and will probably face Mercyhurst. As I type this, there's no score between Clarkson and Cornell with 3:25 left in the first period. (EDIT: Cornell scored with 34 seconds left in the first.)

That's it for me for now. Gritty work by Sarah Erickson to get the two Gopher goals.

Box score

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: officiating. Maybe hockey is a sport that is literally impossible to referee correctly. After every single game, there is grumbling about the officiating; usually on both sides. And it is justified. The missed call before the Laroque penalty that gave the Gophers a 5 v 3 advantage that led to a MN goal is an example. Although usually the winning side is a bit more tempered in their criticism.

I think if the goal is to get decent officiating, there has to be an official up in the stands/press box area. This is the only vantage point that one can really see the game. The on-ice view is obviously not a good one. And having two referees doesn't help; just get twice as many bad calls.

The only thing you can say about the officials is that they keep it interesting and are probably responsible for a few upticks in everyone's blood pressure.

I don't disagree with anything you said here (though an upstairs official is not feasible), except that I would replace the word "interesting" with "frustrating" in the third paragraph. :p

I was to keep myself from asking this, but I can't help it: Why do Shannon Miller's end-of-period "conversations" with the officials seem to work in UMD's favor WAY more often than not?

Work in UMD's favor how? Or is this the usual griping after the Bulldogs win some hardware?

I hear a lot of flack thrown Miller's way for these conversations. But, it seems to me that a lot of coaches have these with refs at games-- so I'm not sure why that is a problem. Isn't that allowed? Would we not do the same if we were coaches looking out for our players?

Now as to what goes on in these conversations I can't attest to. I do know I've heard a lot of them sitting behind the Dogs bench at home and I can't say that they do always work out in her favor.
