Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

If anybody wants some hockey to get prepped for tonight, FSN is currently showing the WCHA semi between OSU and the Gophs.

I wouldn't mind seeing that on tv.. especially to hear the comments concerning the refereeing.. too bad this hotel has no FSN :P

The comments were pretty much of the "they are letting them play" variety once it got to OT and it was obvious that nothing further would be called.

I watched a pair of future Gophers battle this morning as S-SM defeated Colorado Select 6-5. Ms. Kessel tallied a hat trick. Having now seen 5 of the 6 Minnesota recruits (no Kelly Terry), there'll be some fun games ahead.

Sounds good! Any thoughts on the power forward from the Select? I can ask in private if you'd prefer.

You have the option to go and see Ms. Terry play in Chicago later this month. Check Yur rep!

Either the Select have a lot of size, or their dark-colored road uni's make everybody larger -- maybe even Westy was big back in the day? But Turgeon looked quite a bit bigger than she did in street clothes last fall. Her strength caused the opponent to take a couple of penalties, and I could see her being a force in close if she had someone to set her up. I don't think her game is really having to carry the puck 100+ feet which is what she was being asked to do on Saturday. The key will be having the right line combination and a playmaker to give her the puck at the right time. Like most incoming players, she'll have to adjust to her defensive responsibilities. Another piece to the puzzle -- the staff will need to figure out how to properly assemble those pieces, or we won't get the desired picture.

Thanks for the info; I'll have to wait 6 months for my first look. Maybe Boz' can do some scouting?

Incoming recruit Bethany Brausen in Faces in the Crowd, Sports Illustrated March 22 issue and at SI.com

Gonna be a real pleasure rooting for her next season...and a bit of a relief having her on our team.

That spin-o-rama backhand goal was pretty cool! Also has a nice slapper while skating at full speed.
You missed the fact that she split two defenders before going into the spin-o-rama. Absolutely SICK! :D

Point of order:

May I address brookyone?

Thank you!

Season is over, we need an off-season thread.

I'll be waiting quietly over here in the corner.

I'm forbidden from starting that thread prior to the banquet by the formidable powers that be. ;)

I've been wondering about the 2010-2011 Captains...wondering if they'll stick with the two returning or...

I do hope someone can / will give us the banquet details.

Oh!

OK then, sorry for bringing it up.

I'll be waiting quietly over here in the corner.

I usually sit in the corners, down low at Ridder, oftentimes next to Brooky...at some point you will have to come out from 'behind the curtain' and introduce yourself!

Had the opportunity to watch future Gophers--Terry and Davis play and also meet their parents last night following the GER vs. CAN game. Solid players and very nice people. We have a very exciting future to look forward to at Ridder.

Will be back tonight for the Gold medal game vs. the USA.

Well, I know that it's on the 23rd and I'm pretty sure it will be in the DQ Club Room at TCF Bank Stadium... ;)

I know that you were probably talking about "details of what happens at the banquet." But I haven't even received a registration form yet, which concerns me. So I'm not sure what the deal is.

There will likely be at least one underclassman added as a captain or assistant captain. My guess is that Anne Schleper will be wearing a letter on her sweater next season.

Speaking of which, Gophersports did post a write-up of Anne and Noora being named RBK All-Americans.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Looks like there will be less news coming out of the banquet than usual, based on this statement by Coach Frost:
We have decided to not give awards anymore, aside from the Ridder Award. The reason for this is because we want the banquet to be a celebration of our team, not individuals. I don’t want our players or parents upset because they didn’t win an award. This banquet is about our team.

Good move, IMO. In general, I think there is too much emphasis placed on individual awards, at the expense of team unity. And hockey is very much a team sport.
