Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I don't know if anyone else might have read this...I read in the St. Paul PP a short while back that GWH turned a small profit...must have been for the 2008-2009. $150,000 was the figure. I believe that would be the first season in the black for GWH. Prior to this I believe only football, men's hoops and men's hockey generated revenue at the U. Good to hear.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I don't see how that is possible beyond some creative accounting.

Outrageous prices at the snack bar. Works wonders for the bottom line. :( ;)

I recall reading that womens basketball used to make a profit, but that was back when Lindsay Whalen and Janet McCarville (sp?) were playing. They sometimes drew crowds of 8,000+. Now, not nearly so good and I'm sure they're in the red...

I also agree with ARM, it would be almost impossible for the womens hockey team to make a profit for the year. From what I understand the teams at the U (including GWH) do not share in the parking revenues, and if the vast majority of revenues is derived from ticket sales, which I'm assuming it is, I don't see any possibility how that would cover their expenses.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

The topic of discussion at my dinner table last night: how could GWH have made money? If you take into account the money the athletic department gets from hosting tournaments and assume that, like football, the conference gives the athletic department some amount of money when the team makes the Frozen Four you could almost convince yourself that the team turns a profit.

That being said, I would still like to see the accounting. It's not cheap to run an ice arena, to pay three coaches, to pay a trainer, to pay an equipment lady, and to travel as much as they do.

Either way, I hope the trend continues!

Well, nothing like celebrating an overtime victory twice... :o

Another wild one at Ridder. Minnesota 5, Ohio State 4, double-OT. Wish there was a smilie here for "whew".

I really didn't get a good look at any of the Gopher goals in the third period and overtimes other than the one that didn't count... I wasn't sure about the call, because I thought they might be checking for a high stick. At any rate, I knew it was questionable and I saw the ref (Ludwig) immediate point upwards after signaling the score.

I would say that, of the four Buckeye goals, two weren't Noora's fault (screened by her own D on the first, and a deflection on the fourth) but the second and third were a little soft. The second Buckeye tally occurred right after she mishandled the puck and couldn't get her glove on it. The third OSU goal came on a mini-break by Natalie Spooner when she went five-hole. :(

I don't know what to make of the penalties that led to the scoring late in the third period, and then the subsequent lack thereof in the OTs. I guess I'm not surprised that the referees swallowed (and fully digested) their whistles for the extra periods -- usually it takes a felony assault to get a call in OT -- but it was quite a switch after the calls late in the third. Gotta just love the consistency of WCHA officiating.

So it's Minnesota vs. UMD tomorrow at noon. No surprises there. Let's go Gophers!

Kudos to the ref for seeing that right away, because I (along with several other avid Gopher fans) were sitting right by the goal, and the play happened so fast that none of us could tell exactly what happened. We all thought it went in off a body and would count...nobody in the crease before the puck got there, no high stick and it was definitely not kicked in. Didn't think of it at the time, but the only other possibility was that it was gloved in, which turned out to be the call.

Was sitting at the other end for each of OSU's goals, so will have to take your word for it on the two soft ones. Raty will need to be at her usual great self for Minny to beat Duluth in tomorrow's final. I'm concerned that the Gophers will not be totally fresh after today's OT nailbiter.

The Gophersports recap with video interview.

Yeah, the 2OT game not the best circumstances a day before an early conference tourny championship game. Good thing it ended when it did.

Natalie Spooner is very tough to contain eh? She is very dangerous anytime she's on the ice and downright scary for opponents. And she's not the only Buckeye forward to fit that characterization. That was a heckuva game.
