Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I don't claim to be nearly as knowledgeable as ARM about Gophers Womens Hockey, but I think we disagree about the effect not have West in the lineup had in last weekend's series.
I don't think we disagree. West has been our best and steadiest forward all season. She's a huge loss. But once the Gophers take the ice for a game, those suited up are our team for that day, and it doesn't pay to focus on who is missing. If we want a banner, we have to win with however many or few are available.

Reminder that parking will be tough tonight with the mens game starting next door at 6:00 pm also.

These start times make me wonder what is wrong with the line of communication within the department. This isn't the first time this year where we have had a start time that was most likely set to avoid the men's game, but the men's game winds up starting around the same time anyway. Now we are playing at 6:00 on Friday, which seems to be the worst start time from the standpoint of getting people inside the building on time, and because of BTN, so are the men.:( If they move up the men's game, why don't they move the women back?

As has often been the case this year, a change in the mens basketball schedule forced changes in the mens hockey team's start times. Here is an exerpt from Roman Augustoviz's blog in the Star Tribune yesterday, under the headline "WACKY SCHEDULE A PROBLEM":

"Saturday's game is 3 p.m. because of time change in Gophers men's basketball, forced by TV. The Gophers vs. Indiana game at Williams Arena was recently moved from afternoon to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

"It's less than ideal, let's put it that way," Lucia said. "It has been kind of a messed up schedule this year. Like this weekend -- the Big Ten Network comes in two weeks [ago] and changes the basketball game time.

"CC didn't want to play on Sunday. We really didn't want to play on Sunday, so we were forced to play Saturday afternoon and that's why we are moving up the game an hour early on Friday. I know that when we have talked for the future that if the Big Ten [Network] is going to have this flexed scheduling at the end February that all we have to do is say. Like next year we have two Saturday [home] games in February, Friday-Saturday series. All we have to do is tell the Big Ten we can't have a home basketball game that Saturday and play on Thursday or play on Sunday. So in the future, it is not going to be so messed up.

"Same thing with football with the new stadium. In the future, if we have a home football game, we are going to be on the road those wekeends. When we look at next year's schedule, I think every [home] weekend will be a Friday-Saturday series, the way it should be.

"Because in hockey our fans and the players are so attunded to playing Friday and Saturday night. The afternoon games, the atmosphere is just not the same. It was a messed up deal with the Wisconsin weekend [[March 5 and 7] because [of] making a mistake with our building."

Simple solution: Head East! Your 6pm is our 7. Gives me time to get home from work, hook the lap top up to the TV, pop some popcorn and tune into Brian Shultz' Game of the Week!

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I should have given it one of these, eh? ;)
:)

Of course, many of us do not feel this way at all!!
I think I'm gonna have to give the credibility nod to the player / coach on this one...at least as it pertained to the players attitudes during Natalie's career as a Gopher. Although, I think she captured the position of some fans as well.

In my time in the forum, it would seem however, that the many who don't feel that way at all don't post here.

Merely my own honest observation. On to the Red Menace!

Whoa! Don't confuse me on gameday, I have enough trouble translating the Big Ten Network's Eastern Time to Central.:o

Speaking of which, I think that the BTN telecast of Saturday's game debuts Saturday night at 10 PM (I hope we are in the mood to watch it.):D It's also scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Late in the 3rd period it's UMD 5, Bemidji 2. :(

Looks like our Gophers will have to take care of their own business tonight. "Leaving it to the Beavers" won't get the job done! :D

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Drat yer and blast yer and dang yer!

Three thoughts (because that's all I better say):

1) The penalty kill looked porous. The Gopher gals weren't moving well.

2) Mira really had a bad night on the blue line.

3) We had our chances in the OT and even before the OT (like the second of the 5-on-3s) and couldn't convert.

Okay, maybe I'll add a fourth -- We really needed that one, and it got away. It looked like the gals were playing for the win in OT, but instead we don't even get the one point for reaching the shootout. :(

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

I got nothin'
Seven goals scored and only one was a memorable offensive move.

6 mucker goals, four of them for Wisconsin.

Yet another bad night in Ridder. When, oh when will I ever see the Badgers actually lose a game in Minneapolis?

Very disheartening.

North Dakota beats Wisconsin, Mankato beats Wisconsin, Saint Cloud beats Wisconsin, Ohio State beats Wisconsin, Bemidji beats Wisconsin.

Wisconsin ALWAYS beats Minnesota.

February 20, 2010. Tomorrow, all those puck that have hit a stick and deflected over an empty net or hit the goalie's left skate while she's looking over her right shoulder are going to go in. The comeback starts tomorrow.

I believe in the Gophs.:)

Boy oh boy, are we ever glad that you were right on for this one.

It was just a little bit TOO exciting.

Gophers win.

As explained before today's games by Dave in the WCHA thread, seedings for conference tournament are:

1- UMD
2- Minnesota
3- Saint Cloud State
4- Wisconsin

If I had to summarize my feelings in one word...
YES!
:D :D :D

I know that the Gophers are co-champions and not the top seed in the conference playoffs, but I don't think anyone ever expected at the beginning of the season that we'd be at this position. We lost four of the five leading scorers off of last year's team. That's absolutely brutal. But the Gophers persevered and have a conference championship trophy to show for it.

I'm not happy with the team's struggles over the past three weeks... I don't like the fact that we're having to share the title (doesn't matter with whom) given that we were 3 1/2 games ahead with 6 to go. But I'm giddy right now because I'm glad to have this done and even happier that there will be (at least) one new championship banner in Ridder Arena next season.

Now the work for another one or two banners begins. That starts next weekend against Minnesota State. Friday night's game will be at 7 p.m. There's some confusion about the start time on Saturday... I'm trying to confirm that online.

One potential bonus for the win today... Even though UMD got the top seed, Wisconsin finished fourth. I know it's a big assumption that the top seeds will advance next weekend :o , but right now the bracket is set up that Gophers wouldn't play UMD or Wisconsin until the championship game. Those two teams would have to play each other in the semifinal.

Minnesota, Hats Off to Thee! :)

When I left the rink, there was still ongoing discussion about what Saturday's start time will be. Nothing is etched in stone yet.

That's true if all 4 top seeds advance. Unlike the NCAA, the WCHA reseeds the bracket, so if for example, SCSU were to lose but the other home teams won, then you'd still see a UW/UM semi. For now, we have one game, and that's MSU-Mankato on Friday night. There'll be time to worry about what comes next after that one is complete.

Congrats to the Gophers for continuing to work hard and battle through a rough stretch. A banner well deserved!
