Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

If I correctly remember what I've heard before, then if the next stoppage had been a goal by either team, that second goal would not have stood -- only one goal can be awarded at a stoppage. However, the rules also state that any penalties that occur subsequent to the initial goal that is being reviewed will be enforced. I recall this same scenario occurring before with one of the Gopher teams (not sure though if it was the men or the women).
I know it happened during the 2004-2005 season vs OSU, with the Gophers being the team that ultimately scored. The referee on that day was Ms Young (now Fix), and although she did enforce the penalty on Minnesota that led to the whistle, for some bizarre reason the player who was originally in the box for the Buckeyes at the time the "goal" had been scored was not allowed out (it was a PP goal.) Given that, I've always had my doubts as to whether that instance defined how the rulebook states that play should be called.
Thanks ARM for this amusing shout out for the WCHA's undoubted finest official.

I don't believe the Gophers have participated in a Fix officiated game this year, I know I haven't seen her at Ridder. I have seen Greg Shepherd in the building at least once but as yet no sign of Evonne. Does this mean we are in line to see her next weekend for the Badger series?

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Top two players are out? That's the reason that St Cloud got 4 points?

If that really is the reason, that's pretty revealing. Does that mean that the Gophers are really only two players deep, and the rest of the team is no better than the players on any other WCHA team? I thought the Gopher team was the "best of the best" - I didn't know they only had two players who made them stand out. Nice to know.

No, the Huskies won because their players made more plays. In my opinion, and because it wasn't proven in results on the ice it could be invalid, the Gophers still had enough talent to win. They didn't. No excuses, they got beat.

Husky fans will notice next year when Roberts, Nelson, Hogan, Pezon, Hirsch, et all have graduated that teams do sometimes struggle in the wake of lost impact players.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

No, the Huskies won because their players made more plays.

That and because SCSU's goalie made more saves. In the two games Nixon had a .941 save percentage vs. the Gophers' Grogan and Lura's combined .788. I'm sure they would be the first to say that each of them needs to play better if their team is going to sweep this weekend and win the conference. It's time for the whole team to step up and get some momentum going.

I think that could be applied to all 19 players who competed last weekend, and going back another week, include West as well. Throw in the staff for good measure. Everybody has to do their own job a little better this week. When you aren't getting bounces, go out and create some.

At least so far the Huskies haven't had to put up with missing players to the pesky Olympics.

ARM, no fair jumping ahead like that!!

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

All good comments - I was just reacting to the "we didn't have our two best players..." thought. I'm thinking the Gophers are better than two players, right? ...and I think you all agree.

St Cloud did play well this weekend - Nixon was outstanding, as she has been all season - but even with an excellent goalie, the selection of shots has to be limited (defensively) and you have to score goals - the Huskies were able to accomplish those things as a team. And there are those nights where everything just goes your way (or not) - when the puck bounces right to a player waiting to put the puck in the net. Another day it bounces in a different direction. The bounces were in St Cloud's favor for a large part of the weekend. It might or might not be that way if they meet again.

Virtually all neutral observers would say the Gophers are a better team than St Cloud (hence the #2 national ranking vs unranked St Cloud), and yet the gap seems to be narrowing between St Cloud, and other teams, vs the big three. Certainly the Olympic year has an impact, and yet the skill gaps that the Gophers and Bulldogs enjoyed 10 years ago vs the rest of the conference teams are getting smaller every year. Another way to say that is a few years back the Gophers would have beaten St Cloud even on a bad day for them; now it’s not quite as easy to do that.

Also, I agree with the comment that St Cloud will miss their seniors next year. Undoubtedly this year's seniors are the best class that the Huskies have ever had - they will be impossible to replace. The only redeeming thoughts are 1) Nixon is still in place for another year and 2) players almost always step up to opportunities.

Raty is obviously a world class goalie. I thought Grogan played pretty well overall on Friday. It's tough to be in goal when you aren't seeing many shots. She let in 2 goals on what - 14 shots - but maybe she would have let in only 2 on 40 shots too? What's going to happen to her? She seems to be too good to be a backup goalie for two more years, and yet Raty is too good to split time. Do you ever hear rumors of Grogan transferring? Out east somewhere maybe where she wouldn't have to sit a year, or do you think she's content to stay a Gopher even if she doesn't play much in the next few years?

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Probably not. But it is pertinent to this discussion in that last season the Gophs had 5 players with 40 points or more. At the end of the year, one graduated and 2 transferred. A fourth needed surgery over the summer and missed the season. West was the fifth, and now she's out as well. Next year St. Cloud will find that having players miss a series or two will have a bigger impact than it might have this season.

I'm thinking the Gophers are better than two players, right? ...and I think you all agree.
Yes, Minnesota has other quality players. As they lose some of their top-end players, their talent advantage over teams like St. Cloud is just not that big. And less has to go wrong (or right from their opponent's perspective) for an upset to occur.

St Cloud did play well this weekend - Nixon was outstanding...
And hockey is a game where if you don't get at least a push in the goaltending battle, you have to have a wide edge somewhere else, and I don't think the Gophers were able to do that. After the tie Friday with it being Senior Day on Saturday, one could figure it was important for Minnesota to get out of the gate well. It didn't happen, thanks to inspired play by the Huskies.

And there are those nights where everything just goes your way (or not) - when the puck bounces right to a player waiting to put the puck in the net. Another day it bounces in a different direction.
I think that was never more evident than on the first goal Saturday. It was similar to a tennis ball hitting the top of the tape and dropping on one side of the net or the other. Roberts attempt bounced off the pipe, spun along the goal line, and then curled in just a tad. Counts the same as some of the more emphatic shots the Huskies put home later.

Another way to say that is a few years back the Gophers would have beaten St Cloud even on a bad day for them; now it’s not quite as easy to do that.
During the first couple of seasons I watched the two teams play, the question wasn't who would win but how quickly Minnesota would get their 10-goal lead. This isn't a slight against those Husky teams, because they only had about six scholarships then.

Do you ever hear rumors of Grogan transferring? Out east somewhere maybe where she wouldn't have to sit a year, or do you think she's content to stay a Gopher even if she doesn't play much in the next few years?
If there are such rumors, I haven't heard them. I don't know her parents, so I wouldn't be in the loop on such things. I think at this point the focus is on the rest of this season. There will be time during the offseason in another month for developments such as player migration.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Here's the Minnesota Daily's weekend preview article:

Gophers host defending champs, hope to clinch WCHA

In regards to last weekend (versus St. Cloud)...
“We were kind of trying to be a little too fancy [with our shots],” sophomore Sarah Erickson said. “This weekend, I think we’re going to focus on just shooting the puck, getting to the net, and not looking for spots.”
In regards to Westy's status and the effect on the team...
Normally, the Gophers would have no trouble putting the puck in the net when leading-scorer junior Emily West is on the ice, but the team had to go without her last weekend after she suffered a concussion in Duluth. Her status is still day-to-day.

Osiecki said losing a captain and leading scorer not only hurts the team in the statistics, but makes the players uncertain of how permanent the changes they make in her absence are.

“All of that uncertainty affects everybody to a certain degree,” Osiecki said. “But that’s what sports are all about: It’s adapting to the unusual situation.”

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Who do they play this week?
I hope that you're referring to the Huskies and not the Gophs, because you really must be out of the loop (or too lazy to read the article I just linked -- JK) to not know that the Madtown Maniacs are at Ridder this weekend. (Better Dead that RED! :D )

St. Cloud is at Ohio State. Also UMD at Bemidji, and UND at Mankato.

Just because I enjoy some of the comments so much...

http://www1.umn.edu/news/features/2010/UR_CONTENT_176167.html

[UMD was] a team where you just don’t agree with what they do on and off the ice. You find joy and excitement—a lot of it—in beating them and seeing their faces at the end of the game.

I never heard a player or former player say it like this--I mean, we all feel that way about the Dogs but to hear a player say it is very surprising.

I don't claim to be nearly as knowledgeable as ARM about Gophers Womens Hockey, but I think we disagree about the effect not have West in the lineup had in last weekend's series. Not as much as Raty, but the combination of missing key players on both offense and defense really hurt. Any team would feel the effect of having to go without two of their three Kaz nominees.

However by now everyone else should have had time to adjust and understand all the things they need to do without both of these key players in the lineup. After last year and earlier this year, it's a great opportunity for 'payback', and there is certainly plenty of reward if they come to work - and also execute - like they're capable of. Not to mention it would very cool to see a new banner (or two or three) hanging at Ridder when the season starts next year.
