Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Final, game #1: UMD 3, Minnesota 1

Gophers came out blazing and throwing the kitchen sink at UMD goaltender Jennifer Harss. In addition to 21 first-period shots on goal, the Gophers had a good number of attempts that missed high -- it looked like they thought that was Harss' weakness. Harss was also giving up a number of rebounds on the low shots, and it was one rebound that Laura May was able to flip over Harss and into the net. :) But unfortunately they only got the one in the frame. :(

On the other end, the Gophers were giving up some odd-man rushes, but UMD was either missing the net or not completing the final pass. The Bulldogs only had 6 shots on goal in the first period.

The first 10 minutes of the second period was back and forth, but neither team had anything really materialize. Finally it was UMD that got it going and struck paydirt on another odd-man rush; Fridfinnson brought the puck up the ice and decided to take it herself, beating Grogan five-hole (just barely -- the puck just trickled in) to tie it at 1-1. The Gophers struggled in the latter half... they couldn't get any of the pressure on Harss that they had in the first period. :( :(

The third period got a really bad start. After an initial chance by the Gophers, the Bulldogs came back into the Minnesota zone. Fridfinnson dumped a weak backhand onto Grogan, which got past her and sat on the goal line. Katherine Wilson came in and shoved it in the rest of the way. 2-1 Dogs. :( :( :(

The final Bulldog goal came on another odd-man rush. It didn't look like an odd-man rush initially, as the Gophers had the leading two Bulldogs well covered. But Emmanuelle Blais executed a drop pass to a wide-open Fridfinnson -- no Gopher had picked her up coming in behind the play -- and she put it past Grogan for the 3-1 lead. :( :( :( :(

Finally, with 3:42 left, the Gophers got a power play when UMD's Vanessa Thibault got whistled for interference. But after only getting one really good opportunity on goal in the first 45 seconds of the power play, UMD got it deep in the Gopher zone and was able to hold it down there the remaining 1:15. UMD's forecheck was aided by several blind passes by Gopher defenders into completely open space -- no one around. Ugly, ugly, you-gly. That pretty much sealed it. Despite the fact that the Gophers got a subsequent PP opportunity and pulled Grogan for a 6-on-4, they couldn't capitalize. Game over. 3-1 Dogs. :( :( :( :( :(

Not sure what the Gophs can do to improve offensively. The energy in the first period was fantastic. They just needed to get the puck past Harss.

The defensive struggle is a little more obvious... they can't continue to yield the odd-man rushes. Even though UMD couldn't capitalize in the first, it killed us in the second and third. This is exactly what Coach Frost talked about after the North Dakota series two weeks ago.

I'm not even going to comment about the officiating, other than to say that it was Dan Lick and Perrault (not Dave Lick as the box score indicates). But I'll will mention that Shannon Miller called them over for another one of her patented gripe sessions after the second period.

So the rematch is tomorrow at 7 p.m. We'll see what happens. Not good. Not good at all.

Final, game #2: UMD 3, Minnesota 0.

Jenny Lura got the start in net. I guess that this was not a surprise given that two of the goals allowed by Grogan on Friday were considered "soft" by some (particularly the second one).

But unfortunately tonight's game was all about UMD's power play. The first goal came on a shot where Lura was screened -- I don't even know if she saw it. It might have been tipped as well. The second goal came when the Gopher defenders were late in rotating, leaving a Bulldog wide open right at the side of the net. And the third came on a 5-on-3 Bulldog advantage and a hot one-timer.

The officiating looked like it may actually favor the Gophers early when the calls against them were clear-cut with no question and UMD -- or maybe I should say, Jocelyne Larocque -- took a couple as well.

But things got dicey in the third. Emily West laid out a Bulldog -- may have been Jessica Wong, but I can't confirm that -- but it wasn't initially called. UMD's Vanessa Thibault came in with a retribution hit that injured West. Then Megan Bozek came in and cross-checked Thibault. In the midst of all of this, a water bottle filled with Gatorade or Powerade (or one of those) came flying off the Bulldog bench and across the ice, spilling it's orange contents. West had to be helped off to the bench and then later helped again from the bench to the locker room tunnel, putting no weight on her right leg. After 5 minutes of discussion, the officials issued minors only for West (which was served by Katie Frischmann), Thibault, and Bozek. No penalty was given for the tossed bottle (which is believed to have been thrown by Shannon Miller).

That led to a whole string of penalties both ways, including some coincidentals, eventually leading to the 5-on-3 Bulldog advantage in which they scored their 3rd goal. But Minnesota subsequently killed off a second 5-on-3.

Offensively, the Gophers looked a bit anemic. It appeared that UMD was playing a neutral zone trap, and the Gophers had difficulty carrying the puck into the Bulldog zone. Everything was dump-and-chase, and the Gophers weren't winning the chases. Even though there were 31 shots on goal by the Gophers only 2 or 3 of them were really good scoring chances. :(

I'll admit that I chastised Sarah Erickson a couple weeks ago for taking too long to switch the puck to her forehand when she initially picked it up on her backhand. But there were way, way, WAY too many backhand pass and shot attempts by the whole team tonight, and none of them had any mustard on them or (in the case of the pass attempts) were very accurate.

Now, to get on my high-horse for just a second... I'm not a happy camper. Despite the expected snow tomorrow, making my drive back to the Twin Cities more difficult, I'm glad I'm staying the night in Duluth so that I can cool down before getting on the freeway. I hope there was a witness to confirm who tossed the bottle onto the ice, and that the league office has the cajones to suspend them. I'm also ticked at a couple of UMD fans who tossed items onto the ice after the game (including a broom which almost hit a couple Gopher players) -- you can celebrate without being donkeys (and it wasn't your player that had to be helped off the ice earlier, either).

After all of that, there are still two weekends to go. The Gophers are still in the conference lead by 3 points and have the home-and-home against SCSU next weekend. It will be interesting to see what happens.

IMO, this was the high point of the weekend. If there is going to be any fairness, at some point, everyone needs to get a shot. It would be one thing if Grogan was playing lights out, but clearly, she hasn't been. I thought Lura played as well as could be hoped under the circumstances.

Emily West laid out a Bulldog -- may have been Jessica Wong, but I can't confirm that --
Cournoyer was the player down. Wong was the one who tried diving in the first, but as a frosh, has yet to reach a level of proficiency to even fool P&L.

After all of that, there are still two weekends to go.
We've clearly been sputtering since Clarkson. Even Friday's 1st when we played well, people kept airmailing shots over the net. We have to get better every day; wasted days/games can no longer be afforded.

I'm sure this weekend was a bitter pill for the team. Hopefully, they use it as motivation. One shift at a time, start climbing back up.

Amen.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

At one point, a small melee broke out after junior Emily West was cross checked from behind. West suffered a concussion and missed the team bus to stay in the hospital as a precautionary measure overnight, according to team spokeswoman Michelle Traen. A decision on whether she will play next week will be made later in the week.
Get well, Westy.

As for the pic, I'd say that is Seeler, not Schleper.

...and then I clicked on this link about the alumni baseball game, and learned that Emily wasn't the only Gopher to have a dangerous weekend:
The bat flew into the stands and missed Goldy by inches.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

RE West injury: I don't like to hear that kind of news for a player. Concussions are not to be taken lightly. I hope it's not too serious and that she's able to take the ice again very soon.

Raty vs. Zuzana!
I think I read this is the first Olympics for the Slovakian women.

Raty and three Bulldogs (Tuominen, Posa, Peltari), playing...TOGETHER as teammates! I wonder if some will implode with the thought!

Kinda puts the Bulldog/ Gopher bologna into perspective, eh?

Go Finland!

Given that they were Finnish teammates before they were adversaries, I doubt that any adjustment is needed. Best of luck to all of them at the Games.

That's exactly my point. That perhaps some of our adversarial nature is put in perspective by their camaraderie.

Thanks for the link/info...exciting game even though it's one sided...the Finns are on fire and Tomcikova has been standing on her head and looks gassed...over 40 shots on her in 2 periods. I think Slovakia played Russia last night and it's showing...Raty is snoozing at the other end. (Oops, it wasn't Raty, I misread her jersey number).

Commentators are really promoting the Women's game...full house...all to the good.

It'll be interesting to see how the team responds after last weekend. Looking at SCSU's stats, I see that 65 out of the team's 76 total goals have been scored by 4 seniors (Hogan, Roberts, Nelson and Pezon). With the season and their college careers now winding down, I'm sure this group - all Minnesotans - will not need any extra motivation going up against the Gophers.
