Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Maybe next time you can add the Finnish anthem? :)
Ummm... No. ;)

Anyway, that aside, another win for our ladies today. But it still seemed like tough going at times, particularly the latter half of the second period when the Mavericks got the last 4 or 5 shots on goal of the period. On the other hand, it did seem better than Friday too -- hopefully they were starting to gel into the new line combinations that debuted in the first game.

I will say that both of our power play goals were things of beauty. :D The tic-tac-toe passing on the first from Erickson to Francis to West in the second period was gorgeous, and it came at an important time -- less than two minutes after MSU had tied the game. Meanwhile the second PPG was the result of a nice effort holding the offensive zone and then some more fine passing until Anne Schleper launched her bomb from the blue line; I also think it benefited from a deflection off of a Maverick player, but it counts just the same.

I was amazed that Brittany Francis' goal in the first period went in. Megan Bozek made a great rush on the Maverick goal, but I thought the play was essentially over when MSU's Altmann made the initial save. However, the puck was still apparently loose and Brittany tucked it home in a scramble. :)

I'm not sure what-all happened on the Mavericks' goal. It came off of an odd-man rush (gotta stop allowing those :( ) when one of the trailing Mavs picked up a drop-pass and launched the puck at the net. From my vantage point (200+ feet away, mind you) it appeared that Grogan had a bead on it and was going to redirect it into the corner. But then it either went under her paddle or she didn't have her paddle angled correctly, and it went into the net. :( :( Anyone with a better view care to share what they saw there?

Someone else will have to comment on Terra's goal. I was kinda busy helping out the Power Play Club with their silent auction and didn't see it. :o

So the Gophers will have at least a 7-point lead with only 6 games to go when heading up to Duluth next weekend. I'm hoping for at least a split -- I don't mind dropping one game to the 'Dogs as long as we get it back.

Saw the "Warner Hockey School" bus parked behind Mariucci & Ridder on the way into Ridder for this afternoons Gopher / Maverick tilt. Heard the Warner Warriors were playing at Mariucci later today. I didn't get to Mariucci after the GWH win this afternoon but...

The Canadians were here first, and next year, there will be more of them. :)

I didn't see a deflection, but Westy had positioned herself in the right spot, just like she did on the first PP goal. Schleper has figured out when to take something off her shot for a touch more accuracy, which is nice to see this early in her career.

From my vantage point (200+ feet away, mind you) it appeared that Grogan had a bead on it and was going to redirect it into the corner. I thought Grogan made the first stop and the Mavs tucked in the rebound. We'll have to see what the rebroadcast on BTN shows.

Someone else will have to comment on Terra's goal.
If I remember right, it was a good forecheck, but I could be mixing it up with some other goal on the weekend. Anyway, Francis made a nice feed to Rasmussen near the bottom of the right circle and she put it away. Last time I checked, Terra was leading the team in shooting percentage, and skating with Fran and Sarah, she should get more chances to use that quick release. And speaking of her, nice spin-o-rama by #4 in the second yesterday.

A tunnel and a few work study kids were all that separated you from a quick dash to the big barn. Shame on you! :p

John Hageman at the Minnesota Daily continues his terrific coverage this season with his latest article: New lines help Gophers produce.

Regarding Friday's game...
The Gophers went into the locker room down 2-1 after one period. The Gophers struggled right away and were outshot 4-9 in the first period. Minnesota head coach Brad Frost said he hoped the slow start had to do with the unfamiliarity of the new lines.

“We started fairly slow, but I was impressed with just how our team came back in the second period and really started getting pucks to the net,” Frost said. “You could see they were getting a little more comfortable with each other as line mates.”
And some great comments from Alyssa...
Contributing in a big way was goalie Grogan who, after sitting behind freshman Noora Räty for most of the year, had 45 saves over the weekend to give her seven wins on the season.

After the first period of Friday’s game, Grogan settled down and only allowed one more goal the rest of the weekend.

“In my position, I haven’t got too many shots to prove myself,” Grogan said. “I’m happy that I can kind of put it behind me and keep playing.”

Watched the game on NHL network, and IMO Noora was spectacular, despite the 5 GA. USA did hit a couple of crossbars as well, but Finland wasn't able to give their goalie much help. Just too many top-quality scoring chances -- I had flashbacks to Madison.:( The goals from memory were a breakaway, rebound of a deflected shot, quick developing 2-on-1, rebound of a saved semi-breakaway, and rebound off the end boards. I think part of their problem last night was that one team had been centralized for months and the other hadn't. When you start out with a talent deficit anyway, that makes it tough. The Finns kind of ran out of gas in the 3rd, but #41 kept battling.

Hopefully, Mira will have some good news to report to her this weekend.:)

Some good Gopher womens hockey commentary on Roman Augustoviz's blog today:

Scroll down a bit to read the preview of the UMD series:

"Shannon Miller, the UMD women's hockey coach, seemed to be trying to lay a trap for the Gophers this weekend in Duluth."
