Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010
So now that my knees have stopped shaking...
First, before I comment on the game itself, does anyone know what was going on with the shuffled lines tonight?
I first noticed it after Emily West's opening penalty expired, but even then I thought it was just the result of her joining the play; it wasn't until a few minutes later that I realized the lines were different.
Mixed game for the Gophers. It felt like the first period tonight against MSU was exactly what Coach Frost was talking about after last weekend's sweep against UND -- that the team was relying too much on the goaltending. And unfortunately Alyssa Grogan was still showing a little bit of the rust from being on the bench so much this season. The first Maverick goal resulted from a turnover right off of her paddle. The second was a fluttering puck that just went over her and into the net. Thankfully Chelsey Jones scored on the shift right after the first MSU goal to tie it at the time, so the Gophers were only down by one after one.
The second period was better, and we definitely saw it on the score sheet with the three Gopher goals to tie the game, take the lead, and add some insurance. A 5-on-3 PP opportunity that resulted in Emily West's game-tying goal helped, and Becky Kortum capitalized on a bad Maverick turnover to add the previous-mentioned insurance goal. Still, MSU had some pretty good chances at the other end of the ice and Alyssa came up big.
Now sure what I can say about the third period. It was back and forth, and neither team seemed to have any real good scoring chances until MSU had the 6-on-3 late in the period. Thankfully Alyssa held her ground throughout. The one thing is that the Gophers have to stay out of the box -- they cannot give the opponent 10 power play opportunities every game.
I don't have much more to add. It's another win, and I'll happily take it.
Based on other results in the WCHA tonight, it also mathematically eliminates Bemidji and Wisconsin from regular-season title contention.
But the team still has a lot of work to do, and it showed tonight.
(And anyone else is welcomed to comment about the pre-game festivities.
