Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

So Noora is gone already this weekend. Good luck in Vancouver #41!:)
ARM -- I thought you already knew that and were joking about her getting one more POTW award. Yeah, I had heard from Mira last weekend that Noora was leaving tomorrow (Friday) for the Finnish camp. And the Finnish hockey web site confirmed that as well.

Correct. Noora will depart Friday morning towards Colorado Srings. For the monent I am at the hotel where Team Finland just arrived from Vierumaki. Team gathered together yesterday. Team looks pretty anxious and determined. Best regards from the team to all Gophers fans. Noora's Olympic mask looks cool. Nice paintings.

Hmmm, been a while since we've been to a Gopher Women's tilt. Since the men are in Alaska maybe we should get to Ridder this weekend. Maybe Saturday since the kid has an outdoor practice Friday.

Good idea. Spread the word. Bring friends. Tailgate!

Does anyone know if this weekend's games are going to be televised on the Big Ten Network delayed? I know they are online but it is fun to watch on the big screen, too.

I just checked the schedule and did not see either game listed...

If I'm reading the schedule right, there is a game shown at 4 PM CST on Monday. Don't know which game -- I can find out. I think that Student U is showing wrestling as well this weekend, so that probably takes away resource (personnel or air time) that would otherwise show the hockey game.

It appears that you are reading it correctly - obviously scanned the listings too quickly and didn't see it.

So now that my knees have stopped shaking... :o

First, before I comment on the game itself, does anyone know what was going on with the shuffled lines tonight? I first noticed it after Emily West's opening penalty expired, but even then I thought it was just the result of her joining the play; it wasn't until a few minutes later that I realized the lines were different.

Mixed game for the Gophers. It felt like the first period tonight against MSU was exactly what Coach Frost was talking about after last weekend's sweep against UND -- that the team was relying too much on the goaltending. And unfortunately Alyssa Grogan was still showing a little bit of the rust from being on the bench so much this season. The first Maverick goal resulted from a turnover right off of her paddle. The second was a fluttering puck that just went over her and into the net. Thankfully Chelsey Jones scored on the shift right after the first MSU goal to tie it at the time, so the Gophers were only down by one after one.

The second period was better, and we definitely saw it on the score sheet with the three Gopher goals to tie the game, take the lead, and add some insurance. A 5-on-3 PP opportunity that resulted in Emily West's game-tying goal helped, and Becky Kortum capitalized on a bad Maverick turnover to add the previous-mentioned insurance goal. Still, MSU had some pretty good chances at the other end of the ice and Alyssa came up big.

Now sure what I can say about the third period. It was back and forth, and neither team seemed to have any real good scoring chances until MSU had the 6-on-3 late in the period. Thankfully Alyssa held her ground throughout. The one thing is that the Gophers have to stay out of the box -- they cannot give the opponent 10 power play opportunities every game.

I don't have much more to add. It's another win, and I'll happily take it. :) Based on other results in the WCHA tonight, it also mathematically eliminates Bemidji and Wisconsin from regular-season title contention. But the team still has a lot of work to do, and it showed tonight.

(And anyone else is welcomed to comment about the pre-game festivities. ;) )

Okay, so to answer my own question (at least partially)... I found this in the in-game live blog on GopherSports.com...
After last weekend, the Gophers have switched up the lines to see if they can produce a little more offense. Sarah Erickson and Brittany Francis are now with Terra Rasmussen as a left wing. Kelli Blankenship is centering Emily West and Sam Downey, while Jaimie Horton is centering Nikki Ludwigson and Katie Frischmann. The Gopher line of Laura May, Becky Kortum and Chelsey Jones remains the same.
I could have probably guessed that that was the reason, but it seems awfully late in the season to be trying something like that. At least it wasn't a injury-caused change.

Monday's rebroadcast on the Big Ten Network will almost certainly be tomorrow's (Saturday's) game and not tonight's (Friday's), since the webcast of the game tonight was on GopherSports.com and not on BigTenNetwork.com. Saturday's webcast will be on BigTenNetwork.com.

After last weekend's sub-par performance, I think changing things up a bit was a good move. Overall they had a lot more intensity tonight and were able to create lots of turnovers using the aggressive forecheck that we're used to seeing. One thing that needs improvement in the other team's end: blind passes that allows the opponent easy breakouts. Otherwise, their play in the offensive zone was very good, winning most of the battles along the boards, crashing the net and getting rebounds.

Also it was very good to see Grogan settle down and play well after what looked like a nervous start. You could see her gaining confidence as the game progressed, which was a good thing because MSU is very capable of generating some good offensive pressure of their own. I think MSU is a better team than their record indicates, and I can't quite figure out why.

I wanted to holler, "Hey Dave! How much time's left?" halfway through your rendition but heckling is not allowed from my location and is frowned upon during the anthem. Were there a few seeds of doubt wondering if they were ever going to give you any volume?

...but it seems awfully late in the season to be trying something like that.
The timing was unfortunate. Maybe try it later after the goalies have had time to adjust to #41's absence, or try it sooner while she was still here. It was a bad combination in the first -- a rusty goalie and forward lines that seemed to have no idea of their linemate's capabilities and limitations. :(

One thing that needs improvement in the other team's end: blind passes that allows the opponent easy breakouts.
I agree. #4 is one of my favorite players to watch, but she's not playing well. I think her scoring slump has her pressing, winging high-risk/low-reward passes and calling for the puck when there is no passing lane.

Otherwise, their play in the offensive zone was very good, winning most of the battles along the boards...
Yes, after the first, when they seemed to lose all sorts of battles -- 1-on-1, 2-on-1, 3-on-1. Whatever is being said during intermissions should be said after pregame warmup.

I think MSU is a better team than their record indicates, and I can't quite figure out why.
They have good speed among their forwards. They skate hard. But they are #2 in the country in PMI, and near the bottom in PK % -- not a good combination. Their blue line isn't memorable. Goaltending ranges from inconsistent to very good, while others in the league can offer up sensational. They always seem fired up to face the Gophs; I wonder if they get as high to play tOSU, SCSU, BSU, and the like.

Coach Frost starts just about every postgame with something akin to "we're happy to get the 2 points" these days. Just win, baby. Ugly wins look pretty in the standings.:)

I wasn't sure at first what the volume was, since this was my first attempt at that. I had a feeling that there was an issue when Rick, the PA announcer, looked over in my direction right after I started. But it wasn't until they turned it up that I found out what it was supposed to sound like.

But I'm also glad that the song wasn't any longer in duration. Otherwise the mic would have started to pick up on my knees knocking together. :o

A very nicely done singing of our national anthem done by CrazyDave himself...nice job CD. I could swear I heard the officials heckling the singer near the end. ;)

Maybe next time you can add the Finnish anthem? :)
