Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Link to live stats on the BSU website for anyone interested.

I am just heading off to the mens game vs. the Fighting Sioux, but this is the first place I will check when I get home!

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

FINAL - Gophers 1, Beavers 1 in OT. Gophers win shootout 2-1 in four rounds on goals by Zebro (first shooter) and West (fourth shooter). (The link is to the box score.)

The first period was absolutely flat. I'm guessing the team had a huge hangover from Tuesday's performance against Team USA. The Gophers had only 2 shots make it to net in the period. Thankfully, it seemed that Bemidji was content to shoot themselves in the foot as well, not being able to finish what were potentially good scoring chances.

The second period looked like the Gophers woke up a bit. They definitely outplayed Bemidji that period and it showed up on the shot totals as 12-4 in the period. Kelli B. got a nice rebound goal on an initial shot by Terra Rasmussen at 4:43 (the Schlepper assist was added later). Unfortunately, Tomcikova kept the Maroon & Gold from tallying a second time.

The third period was really back and forth, and even. Bemidji seemed to realize they were still in the game and had some chances, but the Gophers had a few as well. Finally, Sertich pulled Zuzana with 1:13 to go, the Gophers couldn't clear the zone with the extra attacker, and Bemidji's Emily Erickson scored on a shot that Noora likely didn't see (and may have been deflected one or more times) with 16 seconds remaining in regulation.

After a scoreless OT, Alex Zebro started the shootout with a great high wrister to the glove side to put the Gophs up 1-0, but Bemidji came back and tied it 1-1 when their first shooter, Erin Cody, ripped the puck past Räty. The next two rounds were scoreless, as both Sarah Erickson and Anne Schlepper tried to deke Tomcikova and failed, but BSU couldn't solve Noora either. Finally Emily West scored on a quick low wrister that surprised Tomcikova, who looked like she was expecting another deke attempt. One more solid save by Noora, and the Gophers took the extra point.

Bemidji is definitely improved from past years, and the Gophers have some work to do before tomorrow afternoon's rematch. But we'll take the two points in the conference standings.

EDIT: Here's the link to the GopherSports.com recap of tonight's game.

Just saw a promo on WCCO TV (Channel 4). Apparently they're going to run a feature on their 10 pm news on Monday night, January 18, discussing how hockey has changed with more girls/women playing. The promo said "one of the Gopher coaches" will be providing insight in the feature.

Good deal. I'll be tuning in.

On the media coverage front regarding GWH specifically, has the MNDaily discontinued covering the Gopher women? Long time since I've read anything in the Daily regarding Gopher women's hockey.

The students have been on break. In some seasons, a new reporter has been assigned to the team for the second semester. This year, John Hageman will return for his second semester, which I believe gives better continuity in coverage, given he is already familiar with the team and their season to date.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Tomcikova is strong in the net and not easy to score on, obviously. Gophers need to bury a few more this afternoon. The Beavers seem to be doing a good job in front of her this season also...blocking shots and clearing pucks away. A much improved BSU team in 2009-2010 from what I saw at Ridder earlier in the season. Last night a very even game per SOG. Bemidji should be very energized after last nights result. Hope to see 30+ SOG for Minnesota this afternoon.

Hope Minnesota is getting all the vocal support they need at John Glas. ;)

Well... both of Brooky's hopes came true, but the end result was almost identical to Friday night with a 1-1 tie and the Gophers winning the shootout.

The Gophers played better than Friday night. I'm not going to say much more than that. They were pretty aggressive offensively throughout the game, as evidenced by the 45 to 25 shot totals. But some bad timing on a defensive pinch-in combined with the other defender changing behind the play led to a 2-on-1 (maybe 2-on-1/2) Beaver rush; Noora then overcommitted against the puck carrier, allowing the Beavers to take a 1-0 lead very early in the game.

Minnesota tied it on a second period power play, when Megan Bozek buried the puck past Tomcikova. The Gophers were getting some good chances, but couldn't find the lucky bounce on some plays and couldn't solve Zuzana on others.

Bemidji had the better chances in OT. It was sort of like, "well, we got this far, so let's try to win it" for the Beavers. Thankfully Noora made four big stops to send it to a shootout.

The shootout went six rounds, with the Gophers shooting first, but nobody could find the touch. West had the puck slide off her stick on her attempt, Zebro fired a wrister hard but wide :( , but finally Brittany Francis got a wrister past Tomcikova. Meanwhile, Noora was solid in her net, stopping all six Beaver attempts (including one where she ended up sitting down in her net but holding her glove outside of it).

So the Gophers take 4 points on the weekend, but as I mentioned to Coach O. as we walked out, that was doing it the hard way.

Here's the link to the GopherSports.com recap of the game.

Also -- given UNH's home loss to Providence (the two finish their home-and-home on Sunday), Clarkson losing to and then tying Mercyhurst, Wisconsin losing the first game at UMD, and Harvard's tie with Cornell on Friday, I expect the Gophers will remain in second place in this coming week's polls (though they'll probably lose that last first place vote in the USCHO poll).

I though it started with a bad forecheck. The entire line came in at the same level, and when the D got the puck out, there wasn't anybody high to help. Bemidji has improved their skating and can now make a team pay for such mistakes.
Bemidji had the better chances in OT.
They also had the only PP in the OT. I thought the Gophs made some strategic errors down the stretch. They went to 2 lines, when their 3rd line was the only one that had scored at 5-on-5 on the weekend. The tide of the game turned in the 2nd period when the 4th line had a shift with good pressure that energized the whole team. I also thought that BSU looked totally gassed when they iced the puck in the closing seconds of regulation, but Minnesota called time out, allowing the defenders to rest rather than forcing them to defend on fumes.

Kudos to Bemidji -- they just keep improving. Their defense blocked a ton of shots. They've got a real shot at home ice for the first time in the WCHA quarters.

But I do like how Minnesota was playing for the most part by the end of the weekend. The fourth line is coming on. Zebro had the strongest weekend of her career. And the two goalies put on a display in the shootout.

Coach O will be on the WCCO TV feature that involves the growth of the women's game. Sometime on the 10 p.m. news. Team USA will also be featured.

Thanks for the heads up! Mark Rosen seems to have recently taken a strong interest in female hockey...while very welcome this is a little surprising to me because I always thought he was more of a basketball guy. I happen to work in the same building as the other radio station he's also on, so the next time I see him in the lobby or elevator I will pass along some encouragement to keep it up!

Just watched the piece on 'CCO.

Here's a link to the WCCO website sports page...loaded with "State of Hockey" articles and video.

I wish I would have written down the actual numbers...the story mentioned the growth of girls HS hockey from 1994, with some 400 girls on about 26 teams, to the present with over 3700 girls on 126 teams. Gotta like those numbers...keep it growing. :)

Sorry for getting away from the Gopher theme momentarily.

The video is now up on wcco.com (as of about 10:55 p.m. CT).

The numbers were 454 players on 24 teams in '94-95, and 3,376 on the 126 teams today. (Love the optimism, brooky ;) )

I asked Coach O. about this feature while at breakfast at the hotel in Bemidji on Saturday, and he said it wasn't him in the piece -- that it was either Frosty or Coach Wood. So I'll have to give him some grief at this Saturday's Power Play Club reception. :p

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Hux linked this story on Krissy Wendell Pohl last week in the Team USA thread, but I especially liked this quote on young Emily:
"We put her on skates during a skate with Santa thing this Christmas. ... I think she'll be active. She has no fear."

Also, I haven't seen a link to this verbal commitment in the Pioneer Press posted:
Wild assistant coach Mike Ramsey, the former Olympian and NHL star, said his daughter Rachel, 17, a junior at Minnetonka High School, has orally committed to play hockey at the University of Minnesota in 2011.

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

You guys are going to be stacked over the next couple of years by the look of things. I guess now the challenge will be how the coach can manage all these superstar mentalities. Good luck, a good problem to have.
