Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

When I left the rink, there was still ongoing discussion about what Saturday's start time will be. Nothing is etched in stone yet.
The WCHA just put out a press release. Saturday's MN-MSU game is listed at 4:07 p.m.

EDIT: This is also confirmed on GopherSports.com.

After seeing her on the ice as part of the post game celebration last night I am wondering if anyone has any information about the progress of rehab for Jen Schoullis.

YEAH NOORA!!! :D :D :D

Finland wins the bronze, defeating Sweden 3-2 in OT in the Bronze Medal Game in Vancouver.

-- Minnesota Daily article by John Hageman: No. 3 Minnesota opens playoffs with Mavericks Friday

A couple of interesting quotes from the Daily article:

“A couple people put themselves before the team and took some selfish penalties [Friday],” Frost said. “I think we learned from that.”

Offhand I don't recall Coach Frost making such critical comments about individual players. He's been the epitome of positive reinforcement all year. Even though he didn't name names, it's not hard to determine which ones he was referring to.

The Gophers may be welcoming back Räty, this season’s WCHA goaltending champion, this weekend against Minnesota State. Frost said she will be back in Minneapolis late Friday morning, giving the team time to assess how she is feeling before reaching a decision for Saturday.

I've been wondering what her schedule (return trip back) would be, and hopefully it's enough time for her to be 100% rested physically. And perhaps just as importantly, whether she'll have enough time to be 100% ready mentally, after all of the pressure she's endured during the past two weeks. Hopefully the answer is "yes" to both questions and she'll be at her best.

I heard him make a very similar comment in one previous post game interview...labeling one players penalty as "unacceptable" and if I recall, the player received a little bonus bench time after serving time for the infraction. Also relating how such infractions (unnecessary or ill advised) as harmful to the teams cause.

From the facebook fan page:

Gopher Fans-Get to the game early tonight as Minnesota honors Noora Räty prior to the starting lineups. Come and cheer on Noora as she presents her bronze medal!

Well, that game would drive any coach -- particularly one that focuses on defense -- absolutely insane.

Minnesota 8, Minnesota State 5

-- Game recap on GopherSports.com - Gophers Win, 8-5 Barnburner Over Minnesota State

Wild, wild, wild game (and I'm not talking about Minnesota's NHL team). Mira Jalosuo scores her first goal as a Gopher, Alex Zebro gets her first of the year, the Gopher survive surrendering a 2-goal lead, and the Gophers go up 1 game to 0 in the best-of-three series.

The first surprise of the night (or maybe not, depending on your expectations) was that Noora Räty started in net for the Gophers, just one day after starring in the bronze medal game at the Vancouver Olympic Games. I certainly didn't expect that, particularly after reading the Minnesota Daily article I linked earlier today, but I was ecstatic to see her in net in her maroon and gold.

After the Gophers broke out to a 3-1 lead after the first period, the two teams traded four goals in the first 4:40 of the second period (two by each team). The two Gopher goals, by West and Erickson, were carbon copy goals as both went short-side under Alli Altmann's glove at tough angles from the right faceoff dot. That chased Altmann, bringing in Paige Thunder for the Mavs. But the Mavs kept hanging around -- in fact, I initially wrote a text message to another Gopher fan that said "We're letting 'em hang around..." when MSU made it a 4-3 game, didn't get it sent before Erickson made it 5-3, then rewrote it and did send it when Emmi Leinonen narrowed the Gopher lead again to 5-4. The Mavs scored once more in the period to make it a 5-5 game after two. After the second period, fellow contributor on this board, Charlie Jig, told me that Noora should sue the Gopher defensive corp for non-support.

Finally, the Gophers turned up the pressure in the third period. Goals by Jones, Kortum, and Zebro in the third period, plus keeping the Mavericks off the board, gave the Gophs the final 3-goal margin and the win. :)

Despite all the crazy action on the ice, probably the biggest highlight of the night was that Räty's father made his first visit to Ridder Arena, wearing Noora's game-worn jersey from yesterday's bronze medal game, and allowing Gopher (and possibly some Maverick) fans to hold, wear, and take pictures with Noora's bronze medal. I apologize that I did not catch his first name (and even if I had, I don't know that I could spell it :o ). Still, it was quite a fun time, and supplemented the energy of the Gopher win. :D I know quite a few Facebook profiles will be updated with pictures of the bronze medal.

I'm not sure what to expect on Saturday. It's an earlier game -- 4:07 p.m. start -- but hopefully the Gopher defense won't look like Swiss cheese again. One thing for certain... I'm glad the Gophers only defend the southern goal once in the game, as 10 of the 13 goals scored Friday night were at that end of the ice. ;)

Thanks for the attribution CD. I think I stole that line from somwhere. Either way, let's just hope I don't have to use it again this afternoon.

I went to a college hockey game, and a marathon broke out!

FINAL: Minnesota 4, Minnesota State 3, TRIPLE OT :D

Emily West scores at 1:16 of the 6th game period, the third overtime. I got a chance to see the postgame interviews (follow the post-game notes link above) and I heard her being interviewed on WCCO radio during the 2nd intermission of the men's game. She just buried a rebound off of the end boards, past Maverick goaltender Alli Altmann.

Minnesota State's first goal was a fluke. MSU's Jenna Hewitt was behind the end line, threw a diagonal "pass" out into the crease (though she had no teammates in that general area), and it hit Noora Räty's skate and deflected in.

I can't say much about Megan Bozek's first period power-play goal. From the opposite end of the ice, it just looked like she ripped one and it went in.

Brittany Francis' goal in the second on the power play was a thing of beauty. Bozek picked up a loose puck behind the MSU net after a bomb by Anne Schleper went wide, and fed Francis who was parked right in front of the net.

And Kelly Blankenship picked up a nice goal right near the end of the second period on a quick rush. Räty got the second assist on the goal, her third assist of the season.

But the defense let the team down a bit again. MSU's second goal, the first by Moira O'Conner, was on another odd-man rush. Those have been killing the Gophers. :( And the third MSU goal, the second by O'Conner, was on a mad scramble in front of the net, where the defense didn't really help out Räty after the initial shot.

But both teams really held firm in the overtime periods. Great jobs by both goaltenders to keep their opponents off the score sheet for 41 minutes. :)

Minnesota moves on to the WCHA Final Faceoff. The Gophers' opponent is still TBD, as the series between St. Cloud and Bemidji is going to a third game on Sunday. If SCSU wins, Minnesota will play the Huskies. If Bemidji wins, Minnesota will play Ohio State, who completed a two-game upset sweep of Wisconsin (and Bemdji would play UMD).

I may go up to St. Cloud tomorrow and see if I can get booed by the fans of both teams for the second consecutive year. :p

A laudable goal.

I salute you.

You should go with one of those hard hats with the red spinning "goal" light on the top. You could use it each time either team scored, ensuring equal venom from the assembled masses.

Actually, at last year's SCSU vs. Minnesota State game, all it took was me showing off my Gopher gear to the National Concrete Center scoreboard camera. No special paraphernalia required. :p

Re: Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2009-2010

Had to go out of town this weekend, so I missed both games, but it's so good to hear they won both, even if not in resounding fashion. This time of year, any win is a great result.

Also really good to hear that Becky Kortum is coming on strong. Came across this article that talks about her strong game on Friday:

http://www.gopherpucklive.com/index.php?page=womensnews&idw=9811

“I thought it was her best game of the year,” Frost said. “Not just because she scored that goal in the third, but on May’s goal, she was the reason, driving to the net, taking two players, screening.”

With each game, the freshman center is looking more like the player who won the state’s Ms. Hockey award as a high school senior last year.

“I think she got through the first half, and now she’s really opening up, and we’re loving what we’re getting out of her now,” May said.

Keep it going, Becky!

Yes, OSU looks to be playing some great hockey down the stretch. We last saw them two months ago (w/o Spooner and Touminen), and I imagine that like most teams, they've grown a lot since then. Very dangerous team, especially at the forward position, with a lot of local kids who will be pumped. Should make for some entertaining games.
