He understands that a missile is just an explosion on the end of a stick moving at a high rate of speed, right?

I don't care if the plane has a great safety record. A missile strike is going to cause an explosion. And it's not even about hitting the plane, it's about getting close and blowing up.

Yup.

Side bar: The goal of certain torpedoes is to not hit and penetrate. It's to get directly under the center of the ship and detonate thus creating a vapor pocket. Now the middle of the ship is unsupported but the ends are: Oh Snap.
