The Russians were clued in by the Iranians when the Iranian strike would begin. The Russians used that window of opportunity and took down the jet at that time. Why? It was bound for Ukraine. Yes, Ukraine. Who was on that jet (besides 60 or so unfortunate Canadians).

I would like to know why there is apparently regular air service between Iran and Ukraine. Is this a way for EU (and American) and Iranian businessvolk to circumvent sanctions?
I'd also like to know why the hell the Iranians, who apparently warned everybody else, including us, didn't think to maybe pick up the phone and call Tehran Air Traffic Control.

I would assume Soleimani was coordinating Iranian efforts to swing Iraq towards Iran the same way our guys are crawling all over it to make sure it stays a conquered vassal state. In other words: geopolitics as usual.
The same reason we took an active interest in Russian missiles in Cuba.

Listening to the BBC hour on NPR last night, the British experts, based upon all available footage, think that there was a bomb aboard and not a missile/rocket strike. That model of the 737 has had a good safety record, and with modern aviation, an explosion of that type is not really possible (his word) to occur these days outside of the engine.
