WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a stunning and inspiring display of leadership, President Joe Biden spoke with leaders of the terrorist organization Hamas to politely ask if they could maybe think about releasing some of their American hostages, potentially, if it was okay with them.

"Hello, Hummus?" Biden said in a leaked transcript of the phone call. "Listen, folks. I've been told you have some Americans there. I was hoping you might be willing to…you know…maybe…let them go. I'm willing to do whatever you want to get you to agree to this. What's that, now? You want another $100 million? Ok, no problem. And supplies to make rockets? I can make that happen. I'd appreciate it if you would think about letting our people go. If you feel like it. Not trying to pressure you. You fellas sound like nice guys. I knew a nice Muslim fella once. Barack. He was…he was the…anyway. Please consider my request. If you can. Take care now. Larvinporginsarbit."

The White House hailed the call as a true moment of American foreign policy power. "The president spoke firmly with the Hamas leaders," said history-making black lesbian Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who is gay and black. "He made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that the United States would like Hamas to think about maybe doing something we asked them to do, as long as they felt like it."

At publishing time, Biden was reportedly enjoying a nap, after which he would await instructions from his handlers about what he should give Hamas next.

I work with two Bosnian women at my work (both beautiful and in their mid-20s, but besides the point). Both voted for Biden in 2020, and neither is voting Biden in 2024 due to his stance on the Israel/Palestine issue (both are Muslim/pro-Palestine). Just two women in Kentucky, but they can’t stand that he’s backing Israel to the hilt. I hope they change their minds as the election gets closer, but they’re both p-ssed off right now.

Opinions 13 months out are rather irrelevant. When it comes closer, do they think Trump will have a different stance, more open to Palestinians?

So, is the guy in charge of the UN really this ****ing stupid?

This is the speech.

The situation in the Middle East is growing more dire by the hour.

The war in Gaza is raging and risks spiralling throughout the region.

Divisions are splintering societies. Tensions threaten to boil over.

At a crucial moment like this, it is vital to be clear on principles -- starting with the fundamental principle of respecting and protecting civilians.

I have condemned unequivocally the horrifying and unprecedented 7 October acts of terror by Hamas in Israel.

Nothing can justify the deliberate killing, injuring and kidnapping of civilians – or the launching of rockets against civilian targets.

All hostages must be treated humanely and released immediately and without conditions. I respectfully note the presence among us of members of their families.

Excellencies,

It is important to also recognize the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum.

The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation.

They have seen their land steadily devoured by settlements and plagued by violence; their economy stifled; their people displaced and their homes demolished. Their hopes for a political solution to their plight have been vanishing.

But the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the appalling attacks by Hamas. And those appalling attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.

Excellencies,

Even war has rules.

We must demand that all parties uphold and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law; take constant care in the conduct of military operations to spare civilians; and respect and protect hospitals and respect the inviolability of UN facilities which today are sheltering more than 600,000 Palestinians.

The relentless bombardment of Gaza by Israeli forces, the level of civilian casualties, and the wholesale destruction of neighborhoods continue to mount and are deeply alarming.

I mourn and honour the dozens of UN colleagues working for UNRWA – sadly, at least 35 and counting – killed in the bombardment of Gaza over the last two weeks.

I owe to their families my condemnation of these and many other similar killings.

The protection of civilians is paramount in any armed conflict.

Protecting civilians can never mean using them as human shields.

Protecting civilians does not mean ordering more than one million people to evacuate to the south, where there is no shelter, no food, no water, no medicine and no fuel, and then continuing to bomb the south itself.

I am deeply concerned about the clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in Gaza.

Let me be clear: No party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law.

Excellencies,

Thankfully, some humanitarian relief is finally getting into Gaza.

But it is a drop of aid in an ocean of need.

In addition, our UN fuel supplies in Gaza will run out in a matter of days. That would be another disaster.

Without fuel, aid cannot be delivered, hospitals will not have power, and drinking water cannot be purified or even pumped.

The people of Gaza need continuous aid delivery at a level that corresponds to the enormous needs. That aid must be delivered without restrictions.

I salute our UN colleagues and humanitarian partners in Gaza working under hazardous conditions and risking their lives to provide aid to those in need. They are an inspiration.

To ease epic suffering, make the delivery of aid easier and safer, and facilitate the release of hostages, I reiterate my appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

Excellencies,

Even in this moment of grave and immediate danger, we cannot lose sight of the only realistic foundation for a true peace and stability: a two-State solution.

Israelis must see their legitimate needs for security materialized, and Palestinians must see their legitimate aspirations for an independent State realized, in line with United Nations resolutions, international law and previous agreements.

Finally, we must be clear on the principle of upholding human dignity.

Polarization and dehumanization are being fueled by a tsunami of disinformation.

We must stand up to the forces of antisemitism, anti-Muslim bigotry and all forms of hate.

Mr. President,
Excellencies,

Today is United Nations Day, marking 78 years since the UN Charter entered into force.

That Charter reflects our shared commitment to advance peace, sustainable development and human rights.

On this UN Day, at this critical hour, I appeal to all to pull back from the brink before the violence claims even more lives and spreads even farther.

Thank you very much.

Intelligent. Honest. Fair. True.

So, yes, he is clearly insane to have said this publicly. One must know they are speaking to gorillas.

No it's not. Bosnian women are gorgeous, and the kicker is, they remain gorgeous into their 50s.

And they can't hold a candle to Croat women.

What a region.

Yeah, thus why I said “I hope they change their minds as the elections get closer,” which implies the weight of their decision this far out may not be felt yet by either of them. But no, they don’t plan to vote for Trump. They know he’s far worse. They know they’d be helping Trump by not voting and/or voting third party. But Biden’s full hilt support for Israel feels like a betrayal to them. It’s raw emotion. They watched their families get annihilated 25 years ago, and they’re witnessing it now with the Palestinians, and they feel like their President is abandoning them.

I actually have a Croat woman in her 20s at my work as well. She’s also beautiful. I am happily married, but there is definitely a positive or two to being Gaylord Focker.

I'll ask a different way. What planet is he living on? Cause it's not this one.

Is…is that not what the two-state solution is all about? Whether it’s feasible or not is irrelevant, because everyone and their dead grandma knows it isn’t. I’ll ask again: the response by Israel…authoritarian in nature, no? Nowhere in his remarks does he say anything like “F-ck Israel. Go Hamas.”

There’s nothing wrong with what he said. So many on either side see it as a betrayal if you acknowledge that maybe the other side deserves to exist while not living in a camp

There are pockets of Muslims who are super conservative and right wing . Look at that Michigan town who took over city council amd now have banned pride flags. The book bannings and school curriculum has certainly energized some. Those weren’t voting for Biden anyway

many Muslims would be upset if joe said anything but annihilate Israel. He’s not gonna do that. But it remains to be seen if they stay home or pull the lever for someone else

Yeah, and I can appreciate that. I fell into a reporting trap where the whole speech wasn't reported. I still do not understand the purpose of the speech. And I do not know what rules of War Ukraine and Israel are supposed to follow when their adversaries follow none.

He’s the head of the UN, the world’s predominant peacekeeping organization. Advocating for anything other than peaceful resolution and/or avoiding war crimes would be absurd. Israel’s response is disgusting. Shame on them.
