There is a high enough dosage of fundamentalist poppycock among the major actors to prohibit a deal as An Insult to the Prophet or God or the Martyrs or Whatever.
 
Whatever. MTG and the GOP will pretend that this is some huge victory and they owned the libs. A majority of the country doesn't really give a sh*t.

Germany ministry of interior has banned phrase “from the river to the sea” although I’m sure it won’t hold up legally. their nation massacred millions of Jews and they have residents and citizens celebrating oct 7. But - like I said I don’t think this holds up and it’s pretty unreasonable

this is why rashida shouldn’t be using it- it’s a freaking dog whistle to her fundie constituents (and she most certainly has some). To me it’s similar to the white power sign being flashed by nazis here- sure it can mean “ok” but we all know that isn’t what they mean and her cute little “oh I mean it for Israel to be free too” is bs as she knows the whackos and media only hear the dog whistle

Why won’t it hold up? Germany restricts lots of speech and association that would be legal in the US. This is right on par for them - they are not bound by our first amendment.

As someone who used to live there, I’m very aware of what free speech means there. They’ve tried previously to ban the hammer and sickle and some other communist symbolism and that was stuck down.

Does Naziism have a formally legal special status in Germany as exempt from speech restrictions? If so, how'd they do that? Or is Naziism a special case of "genocidal ideologies" that are exempt?
 
What, exactly, do you think her fundie constituents are going to do with her words about wanting Palestinian freedom? Have we a seen a spike in Arab-Americans killing Jews in Muslim-majority Dearborn, Hamtramck, or elsewhere in the U.S.? If Arab-Americans in this country were waiting to get more violent against other people, wouldn't Hamas attacking Israel and Israel carpet-bombing the Gaza strip, full of women and children, in response, be a good enough clarion call for them to take action? If anything, she's only unintentionally opening up her constituents to more hate crimes committed against them, as has already happened (obviously Jews have seen a spike as well). I don't think she's using it as a dog whistle, so I'm not part of the "we all know" group. To imply she's using it as a dog whistle is to imply she is intentionally, albeit subtly, calling for violence. Tlaib has said more than once we she wants a two-state solution. And she has said she weeps for Israeli deaths as well. She's also said she wants a ceasefire/peace. I'll take her at her word when she says "river to the sea" is an aspirational call for Palestinian freedom, not a clear message to destroy all Israelis and/or Jews. Just like I take other Palestinians who have been saying the phrase for decades now. That phrase has historically never been meant as a phrase for genocide of Jews, unless one believes only the Israeli/Jewish and not Palestinian version of the phrase. And, of course the media is going to run with it, as if they're so damn trustworthy to be honest about such a sensitive topic. It's drama. CNN, NYT, Washington Post, etc., love drama. You know who else is running with it, for nefarious purposes? The GOP. Disgusting that Tlaib was censured in Congress, with the measure brought up by a f-cking southern white Republican man.
 
I disagree with you on this, and handy already said exactly how I feel. I accept you feel different, you can do the same.

i never said she doesn’t WANT a two state solution Jesus. I said her words will be taken one way by many and she’s a politician and needs to be cognizant if what she says. I don’t know how else to explain that.

I also never said I supported her censure- I do not- so calm down

also- you’re intelligent enough to be aware of the rise of anti semitic violence in the last month alone in many places. Her rhetoric is heard by many. And yes, before you yell some more I’m aware of violence against Arabs kicking up, too- both are horrific

Yell? I’m not yelling. I’m calm. I don’t think you’re yelling, and I think you’re calm. I disagree, and I think that unlike Drew, Whalers, or other trolls, I actually express my views in a respectful, non-trolling manner. At least, I’m certainly trying to do so.

I never said you supported her censure, but you, as a liberal, Democratic voter disagreeing with the phrase and saying she shouldn’t ever say it, despite her and her people disagreeing with you about the meaning, that is going to give an opening for someone, or something, more nefarious than Arab-Americans. And that something is the Republican Party. And the many, many white nationalists who definitely reside in that party, and will use any opportunity to commit hate crimes on Arab Americans and Jewish Americans. Has there been an uptick in Arab American violence against Jews? I know there’s been an uptick in violence against both Jews and Arabs in this country, thus why I sincerely mean it when I say for Handy and other Jews to stay safe. We’re in agreement on all of that. But, is the violence against Jews being committed by Arab Americans? Or, more likely, by white nationalist losers? I think the demanding of Tlaib to be quiet and know her place is about the only disagreement we have. I think the censuring of her, and the asking of her to quiet down, including among many liberals, is going to have way more negative, lasting consequences than her saying “from the river to the sea.”
 
I don’t need her to be “quiet” I literally only said she needs to avoid the loaded phrases.

I don’t disagree with anything you wrote, but I also think she’s giving another opening to the nazis- her accusing Biden of genocide will open the door for more Muslims to refuse to vote for him and we know what that could mean. I think she is highly respected in her community and state (as she should be) and her words can have a lot of meaning- that’s just my meaningless opinion. But this has already all been covered .
