Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

John Patsy Francona's nickname is "Tito".

His son, Terry Fracona's nickname was "Little Tito". Eventually the "Little" got dropped.

Most of the first few "Tito Francona" hits on Google relate to Terry.

Another less-than-stellar outing from Lackey, but he managed to spread all those hits pretty well.

One team at a time. The Jays are now only 0.5 game ahead.

Did Boston bring back Wendell Kim?

Two guys thrown out by a mile at home in the last 10 minutes. They trail 5-3.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

i'm not sure i have ever seen a batter try to appeal to the first base ump that he didnt swing at a pitch until i saw beltre do it 3 or 4 times over the last 2 weeks.

(he's never won)

Have you been in a cave? Guys do it all the time in this era.

I live in a MASN (Orioles) area and rely on MLB Extra Innings for all other games that aren't national. So I have to sit through a LOT of away broadcasts (aside: why can't more clubs find a team like Orsillo-Remy?), and they always crack up when they see Beltre's antics.

Nobody does it quite like Beltre.

i watch 80% of sox games, and all yankee games that are on national tv. but i dont watch too many national broadcasts of other teams... so yah, maybe that qualifies as a cave (though theo's rosters turn over a lot); never seen anyone do that other than a catcher and the occasional pitcher.

maybe you just saw a lot of beltre between seattle and boston and think its the norm???

The first time I saw it, it cracked me up too. I honestly don't remember seeing that at all, and granted I don't watch much more than the national games and Sox games... and its hilarious.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

atleast when the catcher appeals, he already knows the pitch was called a ball and wants clarification on whether the bat head crossed the plate.

i dont know if mlb umpires make different sounds for strike and swinging strike.. i know in little league the guy used to yell 'strike on the swing'... so the thing that cracks me up when beltre does it is that, for all we know, he doesnt even consider whether the pitch was a strike or not to begin with, he just wants to contest that he didnt swing at it!

it also seems to be 'showing the umpire up' which has come into the spotlight lately. i cant imagine that goes over too well with the umps, much like the pitcher staring in after getting the ball back from the catcher.

How did Boston get swept by this team?!?

Can we merge the Os and Nats and make one decent baseball team?

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Something from the "Decisions That Worked Out Well" department:

Tonight, Clay Buchholz and Victor Martinez start for Boston against Justin Masterson and the Indians.

I have nothing against Masterson. I wish him success, by which I mean a one-way ticket out of Cleveland. But you have to think that the Red Sox kept the right guy and let the right one go.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

So much for Clay Buccholz and his hot streak. 11-0??? Yeesh.

He did fine. 7 IP 3 ER is a solid start. 7 total baserunners. He faced only 6 batters over the minimum.

No, blame Boof and Nelson who gave up 8 runs in one inning, with Boof not even getting an out.

Now it doesn't matter if he pitched a CG and only gave up 1 run, the Red Sox scored 0 runs. On days like that, can you blame the pitcher?

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

Can't expect the dominant performances every time. Last night was very Daisuke-like. 30+ pitches in the first inning, lots of walks, teetering on the edge of disaster, but somehow keeping the team in the game.

If there's anybody I don't mind seeing shutting down the Sox like that it's Masterson. Great guy. Now let's hope he has that nasty sinker for some other teams.

Re: Fun Prevention: Red Sox 2010 season thread part 1

If I believed in jinxes, I'd be red-faced right now. Congrats to Masterson for putting a really nice game together. I still wish him luck getting out of Cleveland. :p

Time to regroup and win the finale. 3-1 on a 4 game road series is absolutely fine.
