Frozen Four 2023: Three Blue Bloods and and Upstart

The previous record for fastest OT goal to win a national championship was Steve Alley for Wisconsin in 1977. He scored 23 seconds into overtime to beat Michigan 6-5.

Fun Fact -

# of appearances in FF since they last won a National title. If there was ever a team that was due...

QU - 3
MN - 4 (last win 2003)
Michigan -7 (last win 1998)

Update:
# of appearances in FF since they last won a National title. If there was ever a team that was due...

BU - 2
QU - 0
MN - 5
Michigan -8

Congrats to QU on the win. They were a really good team all year. But also congrats to both teams. That was a fun, exciting game to watch.

The Gophers were out-worked, out-played, and out-coached for at least the 2nd half of the game through the final goal. Q deserves all the credit. Sadly that's a game the Gophers will regret forever. sigh

Congrats to Q.

The best team ALWAYS wins, right? lol

EDIT: That came out wrong. Q may be the best team, I truly believe that. I just laugh when people point to the Title winner and say that is the end all and be all in that argument. Minnesota could easily have been the best team this year, and just fell victim of a bad bounce or circumstance, etc.. We all know it happens all the time. That was my only point. NOT in any way trying to diss Q. HELL NO. They were the #2 seed overall, one of the rarest of occasions in college sports, or at least men's hockey, the top 2 overall seeds in the tourney getting to the Title game. And they handily beat the 3 opponents they played to get to the Title game. And had the best record in the nation, and statistically were deemed the best defensive team in the nation. So I'm fine with the conclusion that this one single solitary game is the end all and be all as to which team was the best team in the nation. And if 7 of the Gopher players end up in the NHL and only 2 of Qs, that won't mean anything whatsoever. Because the winner of one single game in a single elimination tournament is ALWAYS the better team, Always, no argument can be made. Right?

Well, this is one of the times an argument can be made that the winner really was the best team. I don't like to admit this, but it's hard to argue otherwise. I may try to do so, someday, hell I may have already tried to do so in the above paragraph? But I'm just not the person who thinks anyone should have to bow and kiss the winner of one game's feet. So often the loser of a Friday game wins the Saturday game.

Q and UMn play 10 games, imo, UMn wins 7 of the games. But Q would win some of them, 3, maybe more, and this game tonight was one of those. That's not my disrespecting Q, that's me respecting a team that proved all of 2023 that it deserved the #1 ranking in the nation.

End of Edit.

Yeah, if you say so. Only when the loser is a team you all hate.

And YES, the Gophers are STILL the best college hockey program of ALL TIME!!!

And Q is my favorite non-Minnesota based and non-B1G team in the country, so I'm ok with them finally winning their first title ever.

UMn's still dominating the NHL, the olympics, the NCAA tourney stat sheets and the recruiting trail. We'll be back. Should I instead be praising the fuck out of Q? Should I bow and kiss their feet? All those other Gopher fans will do that. That's what Minnesota fans do, that's Minnesota Nice for you. They will praise Q, many will declare Q obviously the best team in the nation this year and claim that Q deserved the title, etc., etc., etc..

Many will claim I'm being a bad sport. But I just read an article titled, "The Cult of Nice". And it pointed out how Jesus, of all people, was often NOT nice. He was often very much, not nice. Being nice so often means, LYING, or telling half truths, or withholding the truth, to avoid hurting others feelings. But I like telling the truth. And honestly, this one game doesn't convince me that Q is the best team in the nation, just like the game UMn lost to Wisconsin didn't convince me that Wisconsin was the best team in the nation, or the game Q couldn't win vs the #59 ranked team in the country. Yeah, Q couldn't get a win vs #59 ranked LIU.

So I can acknowledge that Q played well enough to win the game, and they deserve the Title and the Trophy and bragging rights and everything that comes with winning the last game of the season. Good for them.

But I'm not going to change who I am, I'm not going to kiss anyone's ass just to be nice or politically correct or a good sport.

The same team can't win all the time. Alabama loses in football. ZERO Top 3 seeds got to the Final Four in Men's Basketball. UConn and SCar lost in Women's basketball.

It happens.

Q had never won a title before, in ANY sport, as far as I know? How could you not think it's cool that they finally won one? UMn got COTY, 2 top 3 Hobey Candidates, Highest Point scorers of the year, 3 first team All-Americans, a crap load of players are heading to the NHL, a crapload are already there. The Gophers fill up the US Hockey Hall of Fame, does Q have a single player in the US Hockey Hall of Fame? Why would I not think it's cool that they won this title?

I've only been LESS disappointed losing a Natl Title, NEVER!!! I mean, it didn't cost UMn the title of Greatest College Hockey Program EVER, so not a big deal.

1989 loss to friggin Harvard still haunts me. That one sucked big time. Woog deserved one title. 4th straight Frozen Four, we all thought it was a sure thing.

2023 loss to the Wisconsin women's hockey team haunts me, worst loss in UMn women's hockey in a decade.

Gopher VB team losing the title game hurt bad.

So no, I'm not devastated. I honestly thought I would be. But it's Q, it's like losing to a teddy bear or a cute little puppy, or a playful kitten. I'd have rather won, but it's not so bad losing when you consider who you lost to. It's like losing in Tennis to your brand new smoking hot wife. Sure, no matter what you are a man and would prefer to win, but if you are going to lose to anyone, no one better than the woman you love and just married.

Now if Q starts making it a habit? Well, then that could change things. Like the difference between losing that tennis game with your newlywed wife vs losing a divorce court case with the evil witch you are trying to escape, lol.

So Q fans, congrats. Enjoy it.

Gopher fans? We're used to disappointment, so remember, our Track team is ranked #1. Then there is football and a great hockey recruiting class coming in.

All the Gopher haters out there? Was your team in the Title game??? Didn't think so. lol

The best team in college hockey just won the national championship.
AMEN. Posted it yeterday and they proved it tonight. The best TEAM in all respects. Offense, defense, goaltending, hitting, PK (PK was phenomenal the entire tournament). From halfway through the game, they dominated a team that a lot of folks thought would walk all over them (Gonzaga comparison didn't hold). Minnesota's skill players never got going, a testament to Q's stifeling defense (they're pretty good on D). And what an absolutley beautiful game/Championship winning goal. Tremendous.

I'm more annoyed they've moved on to NHL highlights so quickly. I mean isn't there a trophy presentation they could be showing?

This! Confirms suspicions raised in this thread about where college hockey (or hockey in general) sits with the powers that be in Bristol and the Disney mousehouse. Beyond classless.

BTW, tip of this NU Husky's helmet to QPac. Interestingly, Yaniv Perets and Devon Levi (who has won two of three starts for BUF since leaving Northeastern) are childhood friends from Dollard-des Ormeaux, PQ.

Yeah in the last 15 years eastern teams have now won 8 times..so I really don't see the Big 10 or Western conferences as dominant blue bloods as you indicate. Their is parity in college hockey and the advent of the transfer portal and the build up of non traditional programs without a rich, long history like UMass, and QU will only continue. It's anybody's ballgame today

Why do fans of losing teams always say "If they played 10, or maybe 100, games, my team (X) would win Z times?
The way I see it, this year UMn played QU once and lost (that's 0-1). The Big00 played three games this season against QU and went 0-3.

Why not just congratulate QU and move on? They played the better game and won, and deserved the victory.
I'm not claiming QU is the best team, I'll let you others argue forever about who's the best in your humble opinion. Just that QU was the best team in the tournament this year.

QU ends the year as #1 in the Pairwise. And a well-deserved national championship. Congrats to the team.
