Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

No one is going after Central Michigan, and they aren't an NCAA cash cow. It is because they, like Florida State received the blessing of the tribes whose names they bear to use the names and logos.

Soaring Eagle in Mount Pleasent gets a nice bump every weekend when there's a Chips home football game. There was several other casinos that were in the works to pop up in Michigan. They was soon going to be in a total dogfight in getting those gamblers in their doors. Was the crowd that they get from Chips home football small potatoes really?? Most like it is, but hell, they was a group that had a reason to take the time to drive up to Mount Pleasant, and in need of some time to kill.

No disagreement from me on this. Name defenders on this board should elect you to argue for their side here.

It's a bit of a mixed bag for the NCAA in that there are varying degrees of commercialization tribal governments themselves directly or indirectly allow. The NCAA is morally correct (yes .. and POLITICALLY correct -- that phrase really terrifies people doesn't it?) but has implemented it's decision poorly. No big surprise that any institutionalized entity is prone to stupidity. Nevertheless, the original intent is nothing less than the "right thing to do". I'd support the removal of EVERY "Native American related or based" nickname within the NCAA's purview.

It would be nice to see the name go ... also for the right reasons.
Why is naming a team the Irish, Spartans, or Trojans better than the Sioux, Seminoles, or Chippewa? Sounds racist to me.

Because those groups were not a minority group that subjected to genocide and extermination in this country?

So, its ok if it happened elsewhere, but not here?? The Irish were invaded and dominated by the Britains. Troy didn't look that gift horse in the mouth and their walls fell, and heck, Sparta kept one of their neighbors as cradle to grave slaves for generations until about the rise of Rome.

Those are not a part of our shared past history, culture and collective conscious as a country.

I think we can find plenty of cases of anti-Irish bigotry... the whole fighting irish thing is nothing more than a bigoted cultural stereotype anyhow. The thing is you know this. If you do know this, then why are you OK with it?

Patterns of offense should be universal otherwise its just a different form of ad-hoc tribalism... oh, sweet irony, how I love thee.

We can. But can we find genocide?

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

Sioux hater (the team, not the people), and also a mick.

Considering what UND does for the Indians (no, I'm NOT calling them Native Americans, since I am also a Native American; born and raised in America, so I'm a native), and the support of the one tribe, and it's not something like the Redskins or whatever, the name should stay. Add to that the other teams like the Fighting Irish, Aztecs, Illini, OK Seminoles, Vikings, Utes, etc etc etc, the NCAA is picking on UND for whatever reason (my thought is that it is showboating about "fighting the prejudices"), and the NCAA is looking like a fool while doing so.

North Dakota is also looking like a fool with the legislation, tying up taxpayers' money after the sanctions/threat of sanctions were handed down.

Either way, the name should stay (or I'll make a concession: change it to the Spirit Lakers and keep the same logo), or all "hostile and abusive" names should go. And I say "hostile and abusive" with just a HINT of snark. ;)

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

If it makes you feel any better, and if you had read what I wrote, I already have basically two full time jobs, and will be going to law school and will be joining a law firm when I finish. Also, FWIW, patent lawyers make pretty good money ;).

Many lawyers are scum of the Earth. Hookers make good money, too. Are you going to work for a patent troll?

Re: Fighting Sioux to fight on...For one more year at least.

I am glad that UND won't be forced to dump their long-standing identity for at least another year. This nothing to do with the casual person liking or not liking Native Americans as a people or their cultures, and has everything to do with politics and being PC. How on earth UND is told they have to give up their logo...

UND made the decision to drop the logo. Why is ok for big government to tell them they must use it?

UND was also "forced" to stop using the logo. They can still keep the logo but then they wouldn't benefit from NCAA post-season games there, etc etc etc. They could keep the logo, but they would lose out on money. Follow the dollar.

Fighting Sioux 23 is working two jobs to put himself through law school to earn a Doctorate degree. Very impressive! :)

Meanwhile Happy evidently spents his time and money trolling for hookers.
My guess is that the lawyers Happy really thinks are scum of the earth are prosecutors.:p

because its a publicly funded university and thus an object of the government?

Ever see what life was like for the Irish in the slums of Chicago and New York in the nineteenth century?
