You probably thought Hitler was right.
Godwins law in under 15 posts. Not too shabby there.
My name is Sioux! How do You Do??
You probably thought Hitler was right.
I am glad that UND won't be forced to dump their long-standing identity for at least another year. This nothing to do with the casual person liking or not liking Native Americans as a people or their cultures, and has everything to do with politics and being PC. How on earth UND is told they have to give up their logo, yet Florida State as a college example or the Washington Redskins as a pro example continue to exist make the situation in North Dakota a complete farce.
No one is going after the Redskins because they are a private corporation and they have deep pockets with tons of cash to defend their position and as another poster mentioned no is going after FSU because they put a ton of cash into the NCAA's pockets. But UND is viewed as small and/or weak in the grand scheme of things so to keep the PC, I need a participation trophy for everything crowd happy, the NCAA makes a choice that their particular use of Native American culture is completely unacceptable, while others are just fine as they are...
Too bad the real issue here isn't about people, a university and sports, because if it was, this would have been a non-issue and everyone would just go happily about their business.

IF UND went with the "Fighting Dakotans" could they keep the logo??
OR, UND needs to join a BCS league and then the NCAA will cave in the face of all those lost $$$. For we all know that the BCS conferences really run the NCAA and that the SEC is first among the pigs.
No one is going after Central Michigan, and they aren't an NCAA cash cow. It is because they, like Florida State received the blessing of the tribes whose names they bear to use the names and logos.
Which SEC team bears a Native American name or logo?
Alabama is named after the Alibamu tribe.
You mean like UND did?
You shouldn't lie.
He's not. The Spirit Lake tribe approved of the name. When doing your "Happy" bit, and least make it somewhat believable.![]()
You shouldn't lie.
What about Standing Rock?
From what I heard, the "commoners" of the tribe said ok, but the elders voted against.
What about Standing Rock?

There was no referendum of the "commoners."

Regardless of what you all may think of the NCAA; it is an association of voluntary membership. If UND doesn't want to be part of it they should resign from it. If they do want to be a part of it then they either need to abide by it's rulings or begin litigation in court to show why the NCAA doesn't have the power to strip them of their hostile and abusive nickname/logo.
Note here ... it was a plethora of legal opinions, cost and reticence to litigate that brought UND to come to an agreement with the NCAA which it will be violating by continuing to use this name.
Simply choosing to ignore the agreement that they made with the NCAA will not be the end of this. The NCAA will likely apply some sanctions at this point. Hopefully, it all ends up in court. The legalities haven't changed just because the ND legislature has decided that the squeaky wheels in their email boxes must be appeased.
Bottom line: GTFO of the NCAA if you don't like it's rules.
Know that - I live in ACC country. But among the BCS conferences, the SEC is first amongst equals. That conference can do anything, get caught with its hands in the cookie jar, and pretty much escape with only a slap on the wrist.Joe, Florida State is in the ACC (I'm assuming that was your train of thought).
I'm very glad that UND will be keeping the Fighting Sioux name. The Suhaki would have been a little too weird.
