Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

Yes slow indeed. For you EC people and us Jackals fans. I'm guessing that EC will likely be playing at the dark, dingy and freezing MAC still this season though.
I'm guessing you are correct. The EC administration would rather play in an aging rink, collect all of the revenue, control every facet of the experience, while alienating their fan base, than play in a better (no longer state of the art) facility where EC would share revenue, and forfeit control. I firmly believe that support of EC hockey will decline further without a move, have been somewhat critical of EC's position on this, and was asked to delete some posts that questioned the sanity of those decision makers.

I'm simply an ardent hockey purist who caught the very first EC game, played club in the 70s, attends all the EC home games, half of EC away games, half a dozen Jackals games (used to have season tickets), half a dozen Cornell (used to have season tickets) games each year, some high school, and any decent tourneys within a day's drive. I much prefer college to any other level of the game.

By the way ... welcome to the boards.

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

Stafford is about a half mile from the main campus with Plattsburgh High School and several homes in between. The land was purchased and the fieldhouse and athletic fields built starting in the early 70s. It is still considered "On Campus"

Now it sounds like you are talking about SUNY Plattsburgh and not Elmira(who I thought you were talking about in your other post) As for Plattsburgh your guess is as good as mine since I don't live down there and therefore have never seen the campus.

Reffering to this post just to clarify:

You may fire when ready, Gridley.

No point. Everything I have said so far goes over his head. I tend to be didactic, not confrontational anyway, and it's tough to be didactic when the individual misses the main point - which was where you are from has a lot more to do with how long you live there than where you were from before you moved there. I lived more than half my life in Vermont, I will probably always be "from there." As kash used to say - eom :D

I was talking about Elmira. What I was trying to say is "Why not expand the campus like Platty did?. Stafford is not on the main campus, but is still considered on campus about a half mile up the street.

This city is ancient. It's full of homes and properties that have long since been there all around. The campus is down town. It's not out in the sticks like "The Domes" It would probably be a hassle to get people to leave their homes. It would be quite the public battle.

EC is building a turf field complex on the church property across the street...they could work with the city to acquire property in a way that would benefit homeowners in a down economy...that is, if they really wanted to...

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

Kind of amazes me that the word "turf" now means "artificial turf" as in "fake grass"

From Miriam Webster

Turf:

a : the upper stratum of soil bound by grass and plant roots into a thick mat
b : an artificial substitute for this (as on a playing field)
c : grass

Notice if we follow the dictionary, a turf field complex should be an area of natural (the substance that God invented for playing football and soccer on) playing fields - not an expanse of fake turf.

I can't even begin to guess what for.

If they want to acquire a property they should go after the one of many churches for sale in this city. But in all honesty building an arena when theres already one downtown is a waste of money.

Having lived in Plattsburgh and went to EC I can tell you it would be tough to expand in the same way that Plattsburgh did. I think if I remember correctly the Plattsburgh field house was built for the World Student University games. When I was at EC the first question I asked is why is the Domes were so far from the school and according to legend Elmira did try to build near the school but what homeowners were asking for was out of this world. In fact I was told that the President of the school actually threw someone out of his office when they said how much they wanted.

Will the entire field be purple? ;)

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

It would host home games for soccer, lacrosse and field hockey that are now played on the campus field next to the library...

I guess to me that seems like a waste of cash when they are currently playing on campus or right by the school. I just hope this isn't coming via the taxpayers dime.

Loving the positivity you're bringing. Keep it up.

I guess I have to wonder why you would care if I don't wish for it to be on the tax rolls considering you live in New England. It has no effect on you.

I will surely move to the next closest county over(maybe to PA, hell it's cheaper)before I agree to pay for a dime on this complex. It's a private college, they can have private funding then. Like no local kids go to the school except maybe for their masters. They can find a Mostafa Afr of the collegiate ranks to come save the day!

Difference between this and the First Arena is I and many others can find some use for it on more than one level.

The library field is undersized with poor drainage, grass that disappears by mid September and doesn't return before summer, with pot holes and a slope that makes it more dangerous than sporting... But other than that, its fine;)

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

This city is known for it's pot holes! But especially given the way the weather has been this year it will be right on que, the grass is already dying.

Guess what - if this is on Church property, it is already off the tax rolls. No taxpayer money involved in this project because Elmira is a private school

You strike me as the type of guy who thinks magic is real.

Then they better have an investor or whatever lined up to foot the bill. They really have kept this complex thing under wraps from the general public it seems.
