Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

Well the arena was bought last week and has a new owner who allegedly wants EC to come play:

Really don't know who the guy is. I just know he's not from the area but has lived here the last 32 years of his life. If it's a local i'm guessing hes got far less money than Afr. Don't think he was ever around at the games back when al the big political heads that be were and the big businessmen. Really don't think this place will return to glory like back in the 2000-2004 days. One thing is the economy is in the crapper in this area as opposed to then. He is doing the usual of saying the company line to get in the good graces, I guess it's just wait and see. Apparently he's got a business partner for this named Nate Cook who isn't from the area and has no real ties to it.

Personally I hope it doesn't happen. The Jackals and EC are sort of a divider in this city. Never met anyone who goes to and supports both on an equal ground. Also both rely on weekend scheduling. This means possible scheduling conflicts. I see no way they could bring in the men AND women. You are also talking about possibly a few Saturday's and Sunday's with multple games. Whoever plays the last game will have horrific ice.

One thing i'm sure the EC fans aren't aware of is the equipment at First Arena sucks and is on it's last legs. Afr wouldn't spring for new stuff and i'm not sure Freeman/Cook will either.

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

The county exec made it very clear that the Afrs (owners of the Jackals and manage the Arena) are on very very thin ice. The fire alarm hasn't worked since it was installed, and the county is sick of the Afr's sleazy operating style. The reason Santulli wants EC downtown is to have a primary tenant when the Afr's and Jackals are presumptively evicted at the end of the 12/13 season, which makes the scheduling issue a moot issue.

There are no substantive negatives for EC moving to the Arena other than Connor having to drive the extra 8 miles which most of us do now.
  • Parking is abundant and free is you don't mind walking two blocks
  • There is more than one road into and out of the arena
  • There are no mysterious crop circles under the ice
  • The temperature is tolerable
  • There are more than two concession locations
  • There are more than two bathrooms
  • The lighting isn't abysmal
  • The hand soap is not purple
  • The seats are all comfortable
  • You can eat downtown, then walk to the game
  • The sound system does not suck
  • There is more than one entrance
  • Hopefully more than 20 students would attend
  • My wife would begin attending with me again

Edit ... Here's the latest scoop on this train wreck from the local rag:

You sure about that? I'm pretty sure First Arena had a huge ice problem a couple of years ago in the middle of the ice...

Although I like the place, I don't want to give up our Booster Club "perks" that we currently have. Promise me a reserved seat for all home games, where I want to sit and I might be able to live with that, but, since they (City) charge higher parking fees on "event nights" I can't see paying those idiots extra money just so I can go watch a hockey game, one reason I avoid jackals games. It's free parking any other time at night.
I guess it would bring back those who can't watch a game without a beer in their hand:rolleyes:
Sorry, I'm selfish, I like the fact theat the Domes are close to my home, I can take a half day vacation and get to the game on time, not if they move it downtown I can't.

Besides, scheduleing nightmare IMHO

I doubt we've "Lost" players due to the Domes;)

Theres free parking downtown if you don't mind parking in one of the lots a block or two away. Do it for every Jackals game.

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

I guess I should have added the "wink" smiley to my OP about the "short drive" FYI, Before moving to PV, I used to drive from the Heights for every game.
As I said before, elbojob, I'll bet I've put on more miles driving to EC Games than you have.
My main issue is, and always will be, "How will they handle the Booster Club Members"?

I am just curious why there has never been an endowment from someone for Elmira to build an on campus rink. I am sure there have been many prominent graduates.

If you have seen the campus before you would notice theres just not enough room.

Are you saying I wouldn't be considered being from Northfield because I only lived there for 35 years?

No because you were not born there. You settled there. Sort of like an immigrant coming from elsewhere to come to America.

I have stronger ties to Northfield than anywhere else I have ever lived. "Not from the area" is an epithet that is discriminatory and ridiculous, especially in this context. By your theory, I am from Vancouver, Washington - where I was born and lived a whole 6 months as my mother stayed there with her mother while my father was in the Navy post WWII. Someone who lived in Elmira for 32 years probably has deeper roots in the community than most of the people "from the area." So you are telling me that I can't tell the good people of Colorado that I am from Vermont, but I have to be from the Portland, Ore. area.

Oh, you grew up in a military family so thats a tough call and maybe an exception to the rule as they move all over.

Re: Elmira possibly moving to First Arena?

Newbie and a very slow off season.

Yes slow indeed. For you EC people and us Jackals fans. I'm guessing that EC will likely be playing at the dark, dingy and freezing MAC still this season though.

But all I did was point out that the new owners were not from the area in one of my posts and the conversation somehow turned into this.

To say that somebody with a 30+ year history of living somewhere is not from the area is just plain silly. I guess you are a Jackals fan.

I'm a lot of things but living in CO I have a hard time thinking you really know anything regarding them(and no not a slam just a guess, there is a team somewhere in Colorado in that league but we don't play them)

But I can tell you i'm not an EC fan. If I go to College games it's @ Colgate or Cornell(Cornell being a real tough ticket to get) I just can't do D3. I went to games as a kid before the Jackals came to town. But now watching D3 would be like taking in a FHL Game to me. If the Jackals ever went FHL I wouldn't go. D1 is like mixing in a league of tweeners between the CHL/ECHL and AHL. Stuff I can watch(and actually prefer over the NHL)

The only reason I even posted in this topic was because I saw the news of new ownership had not yet been shared and I figured that groundbreaking news may trigger some conversation and speculation and that one of the EC people here may know if something is afoot.

Stafford is about a half mile from the main campus with Plattsburgh High School and several homes in between. The land was purchased and the fieldhouse and athletic fields built starting in the early 70s. It is still considered "On Campus"
