Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

You ever read the Herald? It makes the New York Post and Washington Times look like legitimate newspapers.

Their sports coverage is pretty good and they have a pro development angle that I like in contrast with the Globe who deifies NIMBY'S. Also they expose a lot of graft in state govt as the corrupt simpletons who serve in the state govt spend their lives trying to get their unemployable friends and relatives jobs.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

The only other entertaining thing was Harry Reid's balls dropping temporarily.

Brown: "I dunno if I can make this debate. Senate business and all, you know."
Reid: "Yeah, we're done for today. You can go."
Brown: "...."

I'm sure they've been sucked back up into whatever pouch he hides them in when Republicans are beating him.

Thanks for this image being in my head now.

Both fair points. The Globe and WaPo are unbelievably sanctimonious when it comes to NIMBY. "WE need public transportation. You want to build a Metro line into Georgetown? GOOD GOD, MAN, do you know who rides subways??!!" And you can predict every "principled" position taken by the NYT for the last 40 years from Shoreham to Gaza by looking at their masthead ("Arthur Ochs Sulzberger. Is that French?").

The bloids are fun if played for laughs. I just wouldn't want to read them to get any, you know, news.

So, it's ok to send troops to war and spend 800 billion without paying for it, but it's not ok to spend 1 billion to help employ those troops when they come back?

Thanks Tom Coburn for proving once again how much of a bunch of tards the Republican Party has in its ranks.

Cui bono? Think about who got the $800 billion (now closer to $2T), then think about who would get the $1B (the actual servicemen).

No sense in helping those 47%er troops who don't take responsibility for their lives...

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Just saw this via a Paul Krugman editorial.

Twitter message sent out by Eric Cantor, the Republican House majority leader, on Labor Day — a holiday that specifically celebrates America’s workers. Here’s what it said, in its entirety: “Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success.” Yes, on a day set aside to honor workers, all Mr. Cantor could bring himself to do was praise their bosses.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/21/opinion/krugman-disdain-for-workers.html?_r=1

Thanks Mr. Cantor. Glad to see you know what Labor Day is all about. You're a tard just like Coburn.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Forcing a vote on that veterans jobs bill is a rare instance of useless Harry Reid playing hardball. Notice Brown and Heller bailing out on their party (as well as two Maine Senators). Not sure how conservative Republicans can live with themselves voting against stuff like this.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Some inside baseball from the wife. She actually respects Coburn. I goggled when she said this given that he's extremely adversarial, he doesn't personally like people who don't share his beliefs (at all -- he says some pretty offensive stuff), and of course he is 180 degrees on every issue I can think of from her. However, she said having worked with him he is absolutely sincere. He's basically on a Mission To Save Us From Ourselves, and he doesn't give a crap who he offends (which, 90% of the time, is the RNC because he won't log roll for them).

Cantor is a slime like DeMint and the RomneyBot '12 -- merely riding a pony to get somewhere for personal aggrandizement. But Coburn? He's the real deal. If I were a constituent I'd be proud of him even as I worked to unseat him for policy reasons.

Then why didn't Coburn insist on paying for the war? He's a hyprocrite just like the rest of them. He should be proposing a "let's finally pay for the wars, tax".

Well said. I'm always wary of people trying to put on the "independent truth teller" cloak. Where was he during the Bush admin when it counted, like paying for the wars?

Fortunately he was eviscerated by Jon Stewart last night. Hopefully it has the same effect on the Veterans Bill as the 9/11 Health Bill.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Interesting article on the possibility of the Dems retaking the House.

I would think we would have to see an even bigger shift towards them than we have already, but if Romney keeps screwing the pooch every third day and driving away more and more voters...

Still... reality. For the Dems to pick up the House, they would basically have to sweep their Safe (145), Likely (21), and Leans (17), plus the Toss-ups (23), and then STILL win 12 of the 23 GOP Leaners. That would be a helluva wave.

Gallup would probably tell you it'd happen, too. Granted, they also said that Carter was a 4 point favourite at this time in 1980.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

The insanity of the GOP in one headline. Lindsey Graham: too liberal.

Remember when all those centrist southern Dem incumbents switched parties in the 80s/90s in self-preservation? I wonder if we'll start to see a similar reaction now, with southern GOP incumbents switching to the Dems to avoid being primaried and then taking their chances in the general against whatever Tea Party wackjob wins the GOP nomination? The Dems aren't going to get pickups in those seats anyway so they might as well take them in.

Maybe we'll see the day where Graham (D-SC), Hutchison (D-TX) and Lugar (D-IN) are part of the majority. :)

Maybe because we have no money to pay for it, just like we have no money to pay for lots of other things that get approved by Congress and the President? Novel thought, I know.

Too early to tell, but I'll give a possible scenario.

States where Dems win seats (net gain): WA (2), CA (5), AZ (1), CO (1), TX (1) (Hispanic south texas seat before anybody goes nuts), IA (1), WI (1), MN (1), MI (1), IL (5)OH (1), PA (2), NY (4), MD (1), VA (1), FL (3), NH (1), LA (1) (lost one seat in redistricting).

States where GOP win seats (net gain): UT (1), OK (1), MO (1), AK (1), SC (1), MA (1) (lost one seat in redistricting), PA (1) (redistricting).

Net +26 Dems. I'm not saying this is going to happen. What I am saying is its not far fetched. I'm not showing gains in Kansas, and redistricting was held even in places like TX (+2 GOP, +2 Dems thanks to courts), NY (one each lost) and Ohio (also one each eliminated).

However, none of this will be clear until October.

One thing about the House is big changes do happen based on swelling seas. The GOP picked up 63 seats in 2010. The Democrats picked up 75 seats in 1948 and 97 in 1932 (an election where the Republicans lost 101 of their 218 seats).

I don't think anybody is really changing their mind from R to D; the wave only happens if a lot more Ds shows up than Rs on election day.

My completely unscientific guess as of today would be D +12, which is only half what they need.

Yet, the bill to end foreign aid got shot down.
