Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Yet, the bill to end foreign aid got shot down.
I'd rather spend money on foreign aid (even though it's an easy target to complain about and is a tiny part of the budget), than a fair amount of other stuff the feds spend money on. Hey, I'd take a little chunk out of our giant defense budget and boost foreign aid.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

I've always suspected Scott Brown to be a dumb*****, but he's getting desperate. I predict Warren creams him in the next debate by saying "Hey Scottie, can you tell us who the Kings and Queens you met with are, and what countries they reign over?" I mean, he only said it 5 different times before he got called on it.

This is not the hallmark of a winning campaign especially since 1) the idiot's calling card is likeability, and 2) since outside spending has been banned via an early agreement, he has to get on camera himself and make these charges.

At least until we have to ramp up our defence budget because of the foreign aid we gave out.

I do also agree that we are not wisely spending tax dollars on other stuff, either. Not from a standpoint of up/down on the program itself, but efficiencies related to it. For example, we could save a LOT of money with Medicare if people on Medicare were allowed to pay for things covered by the plan out of pocket, with the cost not to exceed the reimbursement amount (not to mention, solve the inherent rationing issue associated with the current reimbursement plan). Also, let's take the hit on FDR's mistakes now, and allow people the choice to invest in a 401(k)-style plan OR the government funded social security, with benefits paid accordingly (death benefit would, of course, be the 401(k) money saved by the deceased). Continue to not only grandfather people into social security, but also provide a roll-over plan. If they prefer the government holds onto their money, so be it.

Another idea straight out of conservative la-la land. What happens when millions of people lose their shirt playing the market with their investments. Remember Flaggy, not everybody has your..ahem..superior intellect after all. Wouldn't those millions of elderly people demand the gubmint save them from poverty, and wouldn't policians staring at the voting bloc most likely to show up at the polls every year have an incentive to give it to them?

Oh, that's right. We're talking conservative fantasyland, so I suppose that would neeeevvveeeerr happen.

If they chose to do that, with the possibility of the safety nets still in place, then all there is to say is, "Sorry; we offered, and you declined." As for your idea of voters, I'm sure it's possible that some people will try to do that, and if they're successful, then I suppose we'll end up in the same mess that we're in now.

By the way, were you under the impression that I said anything about eliminating the government plan? I'm good with keeping it, but limiting the payments to those that wish to partake, similar to if you were to buy insurance from a specific company.

I agree completely. Foreign aid allocation for everything (diplomatic, military, food, medicine, refugee assistance, anti-terrorism, anti-nuclear proliferation) is about $50B per year, 1.2% of the federal budget.

Better watch out. You agree with me and Rover will start making nonsensical claims about you also!

Then Flag will agree with Rover, and the universe will end.

You and I agree when you sound like G. K. Chesterton and disagree when you sound like Father Coughlin. I'm cool with that.

Father Coughlin was an Arsenal fan and disliked Notre Dame?

And we're back to the libertarian ideal where citizens are dying in the streets because they made a poor choice or got unlucky. Which is intellectually consistent, but still cold hearted as hell. And not exactly something that the Greatest Country on Earth(tm) should tolerate.

We can't use percentages around here anymore. Flaggy doesn't like it.

I'm under 30 and fiscally conservative. What's a heart?

Here's something that will potentially scare you. I would have said exactly the same thing in my late 20's. In fact, I'm pretty sure from your posts that we voted the same, too.

I am your father, Luke...

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Today is D-Day for the Todd Akin watch. IIRC he's got until 5PM to go to court to take his name off the ballot.

So you're heartless AND brainless? I hate to ask about your status regarding nerve...

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

So you're heartless AND brainless?

No, I was heartless. My degree of brainlessness, whatever it is, has not changed with time, so I was precisely as brainless back when I was thought Frédéric Bastiat was a genius, Murray Rothbard was clever and Lew Rockwell was speaking truth to power. Which, to be fair, was pretty brainless now you mention it.
