Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

I just can't take Linda McMahon seriously. Same thing happened last time as she spent a bunch of money to pull even then when people started to pay attention her support cratered.

There is a very big difference in her opponent this time around. In 2010, Blumenthal was very popular with a lot of people from his time as the state's Attorney General; he picked up a lot of good will by helping people in that role. Plenty of people turned to his office with complaints about various and sundry injustices and he helped them out.

This time around, the Democrat candidate is coming off as a Chris Dodd light....he falls behind on his mortgage, then gets elected to public office, then gets a sweetheart mortgage deal in a re-fi. Also, he's seen as pretty much in the unions' pocket; again Blumenthal was seen differently in this area too.

Not to say he won't pull it out anyway, but McMahon is no conservative; she's merely not a progressive and that helps her somewhat too.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

There are plenty in state and local races. Maybe not at the Federal level right now. In local races there are three Republicans I've known for 20-30 years, that I like and respect and will vote for.

Heck, in some areas, there are no Democrat candidates.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Not like it matters anyway, since the messiah dictator, just like many Presidents before him, will just issue executive orders.

Not sure if you're old enough to remember, but you could have starred on an SNL skit hosted by Jesse Jackson back in the 80's called "The Question is Moot". In it Jackson played a game show host who would ask a question, and after receiving an answer from a contestant would say " the question is moot. due to Reagan's polices on xxxxx....". Pretty amusing, and kinda like your answer to all things Obama!

As an aside, I think that might have been the episode where he went backstage to check on the producers, and all the whites ran out of the room and were replaced with black technicians.

Local politics is about which real estate developer gets to screw your town. The R and D labels don't correspond to the national parties.

I don't watch SNL anyway (aside from Celebrity Jeopardy skits), so I wouldn't know. I'm not saying he'd do it 100% of the time because the events of the past do not guarantee the future, but if the messiah dictator has proven in the past that Congress doesn't matter and he can put forth whatever he wants, such as the DREAM act, then I would think Congress to be effectively dead. I can't remember who said something similar regarding hostages in the Middle East, but it's no different.

A third poll now shows Warren over Brownie, this one by 4.

(oh wait, did I post that under TimP or Rover....):p

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

This is the scariest map for the GOP right now.

Today, 5 of those 6 toss-ups are predicted to go to the GOP (2 days ago it was 6 of 6). But (obviously) all are very close. With Romney self-destructing, what happens if the rats leave the sinking ship and there are significant downticket turnout issues for the right? Theoretically the Dems could not only hold onto the Senate, but actually pick up a seat. That would be an epic fail for the Republicans who have just one more cycle in '14 before they are playing defense with a very weak incumbent field in '16.

removing the check of gridlock would be the worst possible outcome of this election, for everyone. Gridlock has the good effect of limiting the damage and delaying the complete destruction of our way of life. Can you imagine the price of Cheerios if Obama had had a rubber stamp legislature the last four years? That's where we'll end up.
The only thing worse than a (D) monopoly would be an (R) monopoly on power.
I'm buying ammunition.

You don't have to worry about the end of gridlock. There is no way either party is getting to 60 in the Senate any time soon. The next chance of it happening is probably if the GOP cuts a bargain with Obama after the election and then the TP primaries every single GOP incumbent in 2014.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

If Harry Reid's still in charge, the Democrats would have to get to about 78 senators to pass anything.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Nate Silver has Senate forecasts up. Dems lead in seats 51-49, 70% chance of retaining a majority in the Senate.

Re: Elections 2012: Congressional and Gubernatorial

Haven't looked at Silver's analysis, but I'm amused by how the Senate field has actually expanded. While we can quibble with the pollling one way or the other, in recent weeks you can easily find races in NV, AZ, MT, MO, ND, WI, OH, IN, FL, VA, CT, and MA that have the potential to go either way. Add to that the certain turnover in both NE and ME. That's 12 contested seats and two that will flip out of what, 33 up for grabs? Not too shabby and frankly a good thing for democracy to have a wide open playing field.

With Congress' approval in Dick Cheney territory, I'd kinda hope to see 70-80% of seats (of both parties) contested...

We are not a democracy -- thank heaven. We are a republic.
