True. If Scooby really cared about the planet, he'd stop pretending that tax increases on the wealthy (which I support as long as done properly) would solve all sorts of problems, when the money isn't there even if we taxed the wealthy at 100 percent. I think you're way off base here. I don't think Rover is some college kid living off his parents.
I am in my early 30s, own a home, have a child, and a 6-figure income. I don't see anything about the current Republican party that appeals to me. I would like to see the deficit be brought under control with a mix of spending cuts (defense for sure, a GOP sacred cow) and tax increases (another GOP no no) and they are WAY WAY off base on social issues. I think that the president gets to much blame (when things go wrong) or credit (when things go well) but one thing I am certain about is they can have a decades long impact on society based on their supreme court appointments. Because of that, even though I could support some fiscal conservative principles that the Rs like to talk about (but not act on), at this point I can NEVER vote for a Republican for President because the party is too far right socially.

This really isn't that difficult. A bunch of us did it 2 years ago. You raise taxes back to the Clinton era levels AND you reduce spending. Granted, math is hard, but it isn't brain surgery. Maybe someone from the new class of Congresscritters can recommend it...my money would be on Angus King doing it.

When prices are as high as they have been the last few years, there should be no agricultural subsidies. And in fact, I don't think there have been in the last few years, at least in our area, since subsidies kick in below a specific price point. Even at lower prices there shouldn't be subsidies, in my opinion. A government handout is a government handout. My dad would disagree with me, but whatever, I don't care. Take the handouts away from the crackheads and the farmers alike.Bb, you'll be happy to hear the free spending is coming to an end. My new senator elect said that in addition to new revenue she will in fact consider spending cuts. When asked for an example she relied "agriculture subsidies": D

Its funny how every conservative I talk to wants no part of the conservatism that runs the Republican Party, but when you press them for details they start spouting off the same talking points. Nobody is saying taxing the rich will completely solve the budget problem. Nor will cutting the military. All of these things need to happen but the minute you propose something sensible like that we're either on our way to socialism or leaving ourselves vulnerable to the terrorists using our skulls as salad bowls. Fortunately the American people seem to have firmly rejected that logic once again.

Obama certainly made constant insinuations that if we only taxed the rich, had everybody pay their fair share, or all the other ways he said it, that we'd be ok fiscally. He didn't draw a bright line connection, but the insinuation was there constantly, and it worked for him with all the math challenged out there.

In case you hadn't noticed, with the new Medicare tax on investment income, we are going to exceed the Clinton era levels next year by around 10%: the top rate on interest income and dividend income in 2013 will be 43.4% under current law. Of course, thanks to Ben Bernanke accomodating Obama's profligacy in order to keep his jobs, there isn't much interest income to tax.
You could tax 100% of all personal income over $1 million and not even cover the deficit. The whole tax the rich smokescreen was typical huckster snake oil.

No one on the left says it will fix the problem by itself. You can't run around having Mitt Romney paying only 13% in taxes while the rest of us are paying more than that just in payroll taxes. Especially when he's using Tax Havens to hide income from any US taxation at all that I don't have any access to.

Lynah, the whooping and hollering is because our side won. For the 4th time in 6 tries. I can explain this two ways: 1) The way the system works, you maximize electoral votes instead of the popular vote. That's why Obama sent more time in New Hampshire then California. Switch to a national vote model and given that almost all the largest states were won by him and you'd see a higher %.
2)WHO CARES. Whether we won by 2% of lost by 5% but won the electoral vote, the bottom line is the same. Barack Obama is the President for another 4 years. Period. End of story.
Fishy, you missed something important. I'm not saying go back to Clinton era tax levels for merely just the rich. I'm saying for EVERYBODY.
