Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

So from this, I guess it must be true that it was in the SWING STATES (where Obama campaigned hard) where Obama took what, 60, 70% of the vote? I mean, that would constitute a butt-kicking worthy of crowing about, right?

Let's see:

NC: 48% (oops!)
Ohio: 50%
Florida: 50%
Colorado: 51% (ooooh!)
Virginia: 51%
Iowa: 52% (now we're talking!)
Nevada: 52%
NH: 52%
Wisconsin: 53% (peaked out)

Of course, he won Iowa, Nevada, NH, and Wisconsin all by 5+ points (6+ in Wisconsin's case), since Romney wasn't at 48 or 49 but 46 or 47 in each of those states.

You have a point to an extent, but the election really wasn't as close as you're portraying, either. Colorado was the proverbial tipping point (the state which, when ranked by margin of victory, gave Obama 270 electoral votes), and he won that one by 4.5 points.

Re: Elections 2012.2 - Congressional and Gubernatorial

...... Basically, as of the 2012 election, the Electoral College is slanted towards the Democrats. As a result, a small Democratic Victory in the popular vote will translate into a larger than normal victory in the Electoral College.

listing the states and #

california - 55
texas - 38
new york - 29
florida - 29
illinois - 20
pennsylvania - 20
ohio - 18
michigan - 16
georgia - 16

...these 9 states hold 241 electoral votes. all of them have large urban centers (duh!) which house large minority (for now :p) populations that tend to vote D because they are scared to death of R politicians. is it a stretch to see the writing on the wall and guess that the day will soon come with TX votes D?!? that leaves a need for only 29 more EC (which the wacko pothead green NW (WA(12) & OR(7)) or just the socialist triangle (New England(33), which now includes *gulp* NH?!?!?) shows that the D are nearing a solid base of guaranteed in the bank votes enough to win in just 1/3 of the states!!!

Don't forget the Mountain West (Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado). I wouldn't be surprised to see that bloc continue to trend more and more D over the next decade or so. That's 31 EV. As for Texas, if the Repubs continue to botch the immigration issue (at least in the minds of Latinos), it could potentially move slowly towards the Dems to the point where the right D could win the state maybe by 2020 or 2024.

The thing is, the Republicans are surely aware of everything you've just laid out. The biggest change they can make is to soften their stance on immigration. I think a lot of Latino voters are fairly moderate/center right, but the immigration issue pushes them to the Dems. If the Repubs are able to do better on the immigration issue, they likely take back the Mountain West, keep Texas for another generation (or more), and win Florida and Virginia on a regular basis.

I try not to look too forward when dealing with politics (as I'm sure you're aware of, I like to look at things from a historical perspective). As they say, a week is a long time in politics.

Over the years their only real competition came from Louisiana. Unfortunately, Bayou State voters have elected a brilliant, honest dude as Governor. They're no longer in the running.

I'm really surprised a guy like you would have positive feelings about a guy named Piyush. :p:D:D

It's gettng ridiculous. They have to do something to make it a fair fight. I suggest that beginning in 2016 the dems either be required to get at least 375 electoral votes OR put Nancy Pelosi on the ticket. Either one would energize the GOP enough to at least see how an organized campaign might work. Once they get the hang of it, we could wean them off the handicap.

We should be careful not to be too smug about our guy winning. Remember a couple years ago the GOP claiming a "permanent electoral majority"? Yeah, neither do I. But it wasn't that long ago.

There's smug and there's fun. On a hockey board, expect fun.

On that point we have a re-elected Cook County judge in court, facing charges of physically attacking people in her courtroom. But she has an explanation: she was legally insane. Got it. She's been suspended from presiding for 6 months or more, but was re-elected on Tuesday. Ain't democracy grand?

The biggest change [the Republicans] can make is to soften their stance on immigration.

SOFTEN??!?

It's like they ignored their own convention!

Nikki Haley spoke of how her immigrant parents came to the US to pursue the American dream. Susannah Martinez spoke about how her immigrant parents came to the US to pursue the American dream. Paul Ryan spoke about how his immigrant great-grandfather came to the US to pursue the American dream. Wasn't it in 2004 how Arnold Schwarzeneggar spoke at the R convention about how he immigrated to the US to pursue the American dream?

Marco Rubio even sponsored the DREAM Act, which was on its way toward bi-partisan adoption before Obama co-opted it with an executive order that said pretty much the same thing.

The Republicans already have the emotional connections and the stories, they merely need a cohesive sensible policy to go with it.

They need to shut the door before doing anything

Nothing says pro immigration than wanting to waste money to create/maintain a Berlin wall across the border.

Personal anecdotes are useless when the policy can be summed up by this.

I heard Ahnowd S give the commencement address at Emory University in 2010. Excellent speech. He said he was asked to give the commencement address at at one of the Arizona Universities but had to decline because he was afraid he would be arrested as soon as he entered the state.

You mean they could've passed something with bi-partisan support, then withdrew it when they realized it would have bi-partisan support? The hell you say.
