Ebola - all or nothing?

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

Most hep a cases are completely asymptomatic, and the worldwide mortality rate is less than 0.1%. But yeah, we should probably come up with a single approach for that and ebola, because that would make complete sense.

It would to him. As a doctor's kid I'm always uncomfortable when politicians get involved in medical matters. The involvement of the Bush brothers in the Terry Schiavo case was a perfect example. Both were playing to the grandstand. The end of life decisions, in her case, were properly made by her husband. Even if he was a putz. Posturing politicians, debating what should be done in a difficult case like that, are a total turnoff to me.

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

Apples and oranges. The subject is Ebola. Why not try sticking to it?

Yeah, because threads around here always stick to one topic. Shall I go delete every post that doesn't adhere strictly to the designated topic of the thread?

You seem just fine with quarantining a nurse who has no symptoms of Ebola simply out of fear. Is your fear more valid than that of people who are afraid of someone who actually has a disease and may have spread it to others? There is a 0% chance anyone has contracted Ebola from Kaci Hickox, yet you are willing to abolish her Constitutional rights out of an irrational fear.

I am not interested in having a quarantine in either case, though it might be nice for people who ate a meal at a restaurant in Cumberland County to know which restaurant it was so they can get checked out by a physician before they end up in the Emergency Room. I do find it ironic that at the same time the state is going to court to rob one person who isn't even sick of her civil rights they won't even discuss another person who we know is sick and may have spread it.

Where did you get your medical degree? "0% chance" our brave, Jeanne d'Arc nurse can infect anyone? Are you absolutely sure? What is the basis for your confidence? Media reports? Prudence not fear, irrational or otherwise, suggests Florence Nightengale can endure an annoying short period of home confinement to make certain she doesn't unintentionally infect anyone else. And making her stay home for a few days catching up on Breaking Bad is not a constitutional issue. If it were, we'd be justified in slapping her selfish a*s in prison for 21 days. Do the phrase "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" ring a bell?

And why not try answering my question: why is it appropriate to quarantine GIs returning from West Africa but not brave, selfless, civilian medical personnel? Or is the quarantining of those GIs also a constitutional issue? If so, why have you and the rest of the chorus been silent about it?

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

Meanwhile, a restaurant worker in Cumberland County (easily the most populous in the state) may have exposed diners to Hepatitis A. Under state law, this individual can not be identified. However, the government refuses to say what restaurant it was or even what town it was in. When WCSH reporter Don Carrigan went to the DHHS and requested more information, and an interview with someone, he was flatly denied on both counts. They wouldn't even talk about it. So anyone who wasn't vaccinated and ate at a restaurant in Cumberland County may have Hep A. Good to know. The governor is blaming this on illegals, which is convenient since no one can identify the individual.

Should we close every restaurant in the county and quarantine all the workers to be safe?

*yawn*

abolish her Constitutional rights
You accuse me of fear-mongering and then come out with this gem? As if she were going do be denied freedom of speech, religion, and the lot for the rest of her life. Setting aside a single form of freedom of assembly for a few weeks does not constitute an "abolishment."

You are darn right that I'm afraid of Ebola, as should every rational human. When you're the prey species, it's *healthy* to be afraid of the predator. But whatever - so long as we keep a stiff upper lip and don't give in to fear, I'm sure hat will give ebola 2nd thoughts about invading the US and that will keep us safe.

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

This seems to be a good example of a topic which should have rational, testable policy choices based on science. The decisions about whether and how long to quarantine should be fairly non-controversial, based on epidemiological research and principles that are well-established in the medical community. We aren't completely feeling our way in the dark, here.

The disagreements here seem to be primarily political. Let's hypothesize a situation where we drained that off. Say we lived in a magical world where everybody was virtuous and had noble aims, was honest, and had nary a care what the political consequences of policy was -- they simply were trying to do the right thing. Forget motive for a moment and concentrate on results.

What would our debate look like then?

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

if you strip all the political rhetoric and go by the medical advice, it has always been the 21 day quarantine.

considering how awful an outbreak is I guess I would come down on the side of better safe than sorry. also the military is going with the 21 days and they have done extensive research into these types of viruses and how to handle them.

I dont think Kaci Hickok has ebola, but as a nurse who has seen first hand the suffering I would think she would understand erring on the side of caution. perhaps this is her shot at the 15 minutes of fame so many people seek.

You cant be serious...you have a better chance of getting killed by a Hipster Zombie during the Zombie Pub Crawl than you do being "hunted" by that "prey species" called Ebola. Do you have this "rational fear" for all the "prey diseases" that kill people?

Stuff like what you posted is absolutely fear mongering. You may not want to believe it cause you are educated and are super smart but you are still giving in to hysterics. Take a step back and look at the facts instead of pictures of Ebola victims and you would see that.

While Priceless is going over the top a bit his point is correct. Why is it every supposed carrier of Ebola (even when they havent been proven to have it) has their name plastered all over the news and are quarantined but an actual sick person who was serving food to actual people at a restaurant who might be infected with the disease is protected? How many people will die of Hep A this year as compared to EBOLA!!1! in the US?

Well you go on and freak out but you will look no less ridiculous than the people who wore masks to combat Bird Flu or the the people who freaked out about SARS. We are not Sierra Leone...

Doesn't seem political (at least in here) at all.

On one side you have hysterical housewives who are scared that this THING is coming for them and their families and on the other, you have people who believe that science and rational thought should rule the day - and policy.

Pretty simple, really.

Logic has no business here. Be gone.

He won't even go swimming in a pool because of sharks.

The military does all kinds of things for reasons known only to them. Maybe they're doing it because they don't want to deal with the mass hysteria that has welcomed aid workers home.

Yes, people who are looking to become famous go to Fort Kent. Are you familiar with where that is located? It's north. Way north. Drive north from Portland for a few hours and you still have to keep going north. People go there to get away from society, not to become famous.

So locking someone up against their will for no reason is not a violation of civil rights. Interesting.

Re: Ebola - all or nothing?

Oh, and congratulations to everyone who wished the disease on her (no one in this thread I'm sure) because Kaci was taken to the hospital this morning with a fever.

The fact that she hasn't been contagious until now (if she in fact has it) will not matter. We're in for another round of fear-mongering and Facebook Doctors who know more than the medical professionals.

If we had a swimming pool that would hold 300 people, I would happily go swimming, even if I knew for a fact there was a shark. I'd still ask the owner of the shark not to release it in the pool, though.

thus the medical reasoning for a quarantine!! :D
