Dump Term 2, 1.01: Sleep Now in the Fire

No one is saying that pure socialism is the way...what I said was the best parts of our country are based in socialism not capitalism. You do not base a country on capitalism, hell you dont base an economy on it. You can base things like the Stock Market on it but that is about it. We have been lead to believe the free market helps innovate and that may be true, but it also subjugates on a much higher level and the negatives outweigh the positives across the board. That is why we think having 2 weeks paid vacation is awesome while the rest of the civilized world looks at us like we are friggin indenture servants.

Give me a 70/30 split on socialism to capitalism and I will show you a populace that is likely overall thriving and way less divided.

(I wish I could say this stuff to my students...but I would be free marketed out of a job)
So…a combination of socialism and capitalism. Sounds like we’re on the same page.

Nah my friend. I have been liking DGF’s posts, which you’ve agreed with, because I think the Scandinavian countries also do it very well. I may be biased because I’m a Minnesotan with Norwegian and Swedish in my blood, but uffda, we can do better here. I think jimjamesak asked if we could do the same as those places in a country so big and diverse as ours. If we’re truly the richest country in the world (well, were, lol) I think we can.

Yes, it needs to be a mix. Unfortunately for the United States the entire idea of any "socialism" died in 1980 with Reagan. We have been pumping the handcart of stupidity ever since.

I don't know if we can...but i would rather try because our economy and our policies are a joke at best and a ponzi scheme at worst.

No Capitalism is the problem because it only works when greed is not factored in. All the best parts of this country are not capitalistic, they are socialistic. You might not like that, but it's hard to argue against it.

Guard rails are a red herring. Regulation is only there to curb the elephant in the room...greed. And btw it doesn't even do that well. Guard rails are like TSA...they make things "feel" fair and safe but in reality changes nothing. The wealth gap doesn't disappear under Democrats (who regulate and strengthen Guard rails) and poverty isn't solved...

No only one thing fixes capitalism and that is massive taxation and distribution of basic needs to everyone. Health care for all, UBI, livable wages, union protection, Social Security...etc. All the things Socialist societies have. (Well not UBI yet) You set that baseline and maybe capitalism can work with strong guard rails. But as long as people are always out to maximize everything no guard rail will be able to protect us because half the country thinks they can be the next billionaire.

Basically capitalism woukd be great if not for the people ;)
In many ways it was working before Reagan. Of course it wasn't without faults.

As an aside I've been deleting any of my SM posts with "the name" in them because honestly I don't trust I'll be able to fly home in May without scrutiny. I can't rule anything out in this day an age.

Any attempt would almost assuredly require constitutional amendments to make any real reform stick, and amendments are next to impossible now.

It's why I think a breakup is inevitable. There are fundamental structural problems with the country and they're near impossible to fix.

I’m so glad we got that flaccid loser Merrick Garland out of the AG spot, and placed fighter Pam Bondi into it, so she can take on threats like Songs for Littles creator Ms. Rachel. If your kids are around the age of mine (5 and 4), you know Ms. Rachel, and I’ll have you know that antisemitic hag is posting about Palestinian children facing harsh conditions in Gaza, such as dying from hypothermia and suffering malnutrition. Definitely Hamas propaganda, so Bondi looking into this is totally not a waste of time or resources.

I know I rib Kepler constantly, which he rightly ignores, but I’m in agreement with him, and you, and anyone else that says we’re all in this together against fascism. Left, liberal, center, anti-Trump conservative, who the fuck cares at this point. Beat back fascism, if that’s even possible at this point, and we can go back to sniping each other once (if) democracy is restored.

Capitalism is fine. Put the guardrails back on. I don’t give a fuck if I’m a millionaire or billionaire. I just want to afford my bills, have a nice thing or two, and take a vacation. I don’t hate millionaires or billionaires. I just want them to pay their fair share in taxes to help keep society/government functioning for the common good, and to help the truly destitute.
This is exactly how I feel. Like, I don't begrudge anyone for making something good and profiting.

I just want that profit to be taxed at a rate commensurate with the opportunity that society provided. For instance, I don't believe there is a drug that has been released in the last like 15 years that didn't have a part in NIH or NSF funding. We should be taxing the profits appropriately, not just the principal, the profits. Or we get a cut of equity. I don't care which, I just want recognition that the opportunity was borne of The People.

It works great in nearly all of europe. Capitalism within the lines is fine. Democratic socialist policies are the fruit of properly controlled capitalism. I really don't think the Nordic countries could afford their programs without capitalism.

I really don't think that's the case. Packing the court takes 50 senators. Overturn Citizens and you've fixed like 50% of the problem. The rest is the heavy lift from there.

Problem is, packing the court and overturning Citizens United doesn’t undo the gerrymandering in red states. It doesn’t get rid of the Electoral College. It doesn’t prevent a Republican administration coming along and undoing everything that wasn’t nailed down. It doesn’t fix the structural problems.

That’s the biggest problem with some of y’all, thinking patchwork jobs are real solutions when we need to be going for the throat. Until we can slam the door and definitively say “NO!”, then any changes made mean absolute dick.
