Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

This.

I take my vitamin with a glass of OJ in the morning.

Sloe Gin: the Las Vegas 1/2 is tempting. My goal is to do a 1/2 this year, and with the weather up here, it's gonna be best to shoot for a fall one so I'm not trying to do too much training in the snow. But, there's the obvious hurdle of me being on the other end of the country.

I'm down 2 pounds on the year already, simply by watching what I eat a bit more. However, I'm finding myself lapsing back in to old bad habits of not eating enough or at all. Any suggestions on how I can break that?

Also, Facebook has an application where you can log runs. I've been using that, and it holds me a bit more accountable (especially since track coach Mom on there).

Missed my '09 goal of losing 32 lbs (back to the weight that insurance actuarials consider "normal" for my height), but I did get down 22 lbs, and was running on treadmill 3-4 miles every other day with anaerobic program (weights, etc.) on the odd days. Stuck with basic vitamins and amino acids, along with low fat/carb meal plan. Did it until Thanksgiving, got bronchitis and haven't done a thing until this week, 175 days of exercise in 2009, though. Only gained 2 lbs back, but lost a ton of stamina and strength.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

ELCAsoccer and I joined the YMCA.

Went for my first workout today. The elliptical was not so bad. I decided to do a little training on the Cybex machines, though, because I need to start building up strength for the summer marching/performance season (I'm a bass drummer in a pipe-and-drum band, and my drum is heavy even with an ergonomic weight-balancing shoulder brace). I'm not sore from the elliptical (in my legs), but I am sore from the weights (shoulders and erector spinae, mostly--my shoulders are Teh Suck from several sports related accidents).

The thing I love about the Y over other gyms is that they offer so much more than just machines and weights and exercise classes.

I don't have any set goals for weight loss/stamina/etc. I have SAD and have been told that exercise will help because of the release of endorphins.

This post is a reference post for later. I don't like keeping logs because I suck at it.

Bench: 120
Squat: 85
Shoulder Press: 80
Deadlift: 165

My prediction is this: with the right training, your squat value will easily outpace your bench. Squats are the most important followed by deadlifts.

good luck!

Well, seeing as I started off from scratch only 5-6 weeks ago I think progress has been good. Its amazing how quick it builds though which is what I'm finding. Most of those have gone up at least 5 pounds a week.

I basically asked a co-worker about what he was doing and I've adopted to that method. My legs have always been a strength so it won't surprise me of that builds up. I can probably put on more now but might as well build it up at a reasonable pace so that I get form down and so that I don't overshoot on accident.

I'm keeping my record on a "simple" notepad document on my phone... hence no time log. I just want a recording of where I am now so I can look back at it later.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Geez- I should read entire posts.

Check Active.com for races in your area. While I'll second Bob's suggestion on coming down to the LP for a race (and there's a cool 1/2 between Dexter and Ann Arbor you can still make), I bet there are some really spectacular ones up in the UP.

If the Active website doesn't have anything, 100% for sure, your local running shop will have *something*- ours have a bunch of events from local 5ks' to the multi person Dances with Dirt event.

I hope you do it- last year was my first year of running, and I have found it quite rewarding. And I can deal that Mrs Alfa is so much faster than me.
Yeah I find that actvie and cool running depends on what part of the country you are in. I found in Mass just about ever road race under the sun was on at least one of those sites. It would of been easier to list the ones that were not.
Where as in Illinois, those sites are not very well utilized, so I am having to find other ways to find out about races.
So I guess it depends on where you are. Luckily I have a coworker that runs ultras now (the marathon just isnt enough for her....) so she knows of alot of the bigger runs in the region.

Bob: Grand Rapids is high on the list. Little Sister is doing the full this year, so she (and presumably my mom) will be there. There's the one in the Soo that's on the list, too. Las Vegas would just be awesome, though...

I know there's a marathon in Duluth--anyone know if they have a 1/2, too?

Grandma's does have a half. A friend of mine used to run it every year before he started having some weird ticker trouble.
Oh Grandma's......that is an excellent idea.

I thought so, too, but then I checked the calendar. It falls on the weekend between my little brother's graduation and my roommate's wedding (that I'm in). Unless FM and I end up in Superior or somewhere relatively close this summer, I don't know if I can afford to travel that much. Plus, I'm looking at races later in the year.

VEGAS!!!! :D

So far my month is going well. I've kept up with my running and swimming and my treadmill sprints. Overall I am doing great.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I swear, I'm a walking disaster lately!

This week has gone pretty well despite being in the most extreme pain I've ever experienced. Somehow I've managed to pinch a nerve in my neck. I can't turn my head without stabbing pain down my left arm. Got X-rays yesterday, so we'll see what they say.

2010 is just not working out for me so far. Though I will say, I have managed to go to the gym and get on a bike everyday to try not to have a complete waste of a week again, and I skated at my hockey practice yesterday (though my coach looked at me like I was insane, considering I couldn't stop or turn to the left since I couldn't turn my head...).

I should probably start doing the same, fortunately my gains are so slow at this stage, I can remember all my big lifts within 5-10 lbs.

Thankfully, the internet is a wonderful resource for all your lifting needs. Be sure to stay on top of your form for squats, I don't recommend using a belt either since you'll build more core strength without it. If you do this right, your gains will skyrocket ( since you just started), and you'll start to notice everything change within the year. Don't stop when you hit a wall, that means your body has adjusted. Plenty of folks here will be more than willing to guide you through those periods.

Remember your end goal; looking good and feeling good.

USCHO Vegas invasion? This could be scary.

I think I found a nice late spring half in Illinois, in Campaign-Urbana. The key word was FLAT!

And I thought about it... I will be running Chicago later this year. Registration opens on February 1, and I need to register ASAP if I'm to enter.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I like the idea of us USCHOers having a contingent in Vegas for the half. I think that would be really fun. :)

Pat, are these weights what you are maxing out on, or what you are using to do say 3 sets of 10? I only ask because where you're just starting out with weight training, I wouldn't even think of maxing out right now. Light weight and high reps would be the way to go.

I agree - going too heavy early on is a bad idea, and will most likely lead to strains and pulls that will have you sitting on your behind instead of lifting at the gym. On the other hand, going too light isn't going to do much for you. Curling a loaf of bread 100 times might burn some calories, but it's not going to build much muscle.

3 sets of 10 (or 2 sets of 10 if you're just starting out) is one way to go. Choose a weight that you can just get through that 10th rep on your first set (i.e. you could not, no matter how hard you try, do #11). You probably aren't going to get through 10 on the second and third sets, so go to the point of failure again. Continue with that weight until you can get through all 3 sets of 10. Then it's time to move up.

All depends what your goals and current fitness level are, I guess. I'm not Mr. Physically Fit by any means, but this method has worked pretty well for me. :)

tomorrow I'll be trying hot yoga; next week I'm taking a class at LA Boxing.

Slightly jealous on both counts.

I want to try yoga. Not necessarily the hot kind, but I've heard yoga is great for flexibility.

Boxing is another thing I've always wanted to try, but the clubs around me are so expensive!
