Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

new PR, pushed pressed 190 lbs X 1 (failed on 200). Next week I am going to try for 4/9ths, or 0.5 mile of lunges and see how it goes. Diet and everything has been great so far, and no drinking after new years. That is going to change this weekend though :D

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I am strongly considering that. Especially since Nevada is one of the final 6 states I need to visit!!

we'd love to see you out there. We're doing it with a guy I work with and his wife, so if you're up for it, see you there. :)

I agree with this too. My wife and I use it on each other to get us to the gym when one of us is not feeling like it. I usually get the “Well I am going with or without you. You can either be lazy and watch tv or go to the gym and feel better about yourself.”

Quiz and I do this to each other all the time. It's not a guilt trip so much as it is motivation. Because you very rarely regret the workouts you do, but you'll always regret the ones you skipped.

Shameless plug for our workout blog here, but I have an entry about a Runners World moment that happened to me today when I was running. Also, if you want to track our progress in working out, check it out!

Yeah I am going to wait a month or two to see if I can go without any the fun injury or sickness that have been struggling with the last two years. But come March if I am still going strong I will sign up.

I have a good feeling about 2010.

Besides being a masochist and wanting to not be able to walk for a week, why would one want to do lunges for distance? Just to build up leg strength?

my buddys brother did 1 full mile while at UNH, and I am working up to that. Not sure why, but the general idea is to develop enough endurance to always have some fuel in the tank. Its more of a progression thing, and not really something I am intending to use as training. After reading somewhere that most folks don't come close to their athletic potential, I just wanted to see how hard I could push it.

Today was 0.5 mi, and am feeling okay for now. Probably going to be miserable tomorrow though.

most people have no idea what their threshold is. They quit way too early.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

What works for me is not to think about whether or not I want to go - no rationalization or validation of why I shouldn't go. Just go. Once you're there, you have to do something, and you'll be glad you went.

This was pretty much what I kept telling myself when my alarm went off at 4:55 a.m. this morning... that there wasn't an option of not going. It worked!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

EAT BREAKFAST!!!!!!!! Most important single change you can make. And take your vitamins then.

This.

I take my vitamin with a glass of OJ in the morning.

Sloe Gin: the Las Vegas 1/2 is tempting. My goal is to do a 1/2 this year, and with the weather up here, it's gonna be best to shoot for a fall one so I'm not trying to do too much training in the snow. But, there's the obvious hurdle of me being on the other end of the country.

I'm down 2 pounds on the year already, simply by watching what I eat a bit more. However, I'm finding myself lapsing back in to old bad habits of not eating enough or at all. Any suggestions on how I can break that?

Also, Facebook has an application where you can log runs. I've been using that, and it holds me a bit more accountable (especially since track coach Mom on there).

I have one of the worst sugar tooths out of anyone I know. When I try and stop, I usually lapse and binge worse than had I just moderated. Earlier in December, I read an interesting book on diet ( not dieting), and it mentioned that vices should not be stopped cold turkey for just the reason I mentioned. What I do as of now is treat myself once a month on a junk food I normally crave. Between doing that, and giving myself enough substitutes...the old habit is all but dead.

It is amazing how much diet affects strength and overall athletic performance at my age ( 29). The goal is to improve the core lifts, but those vary depending on what I ate that day, and how much sleep I had. It helps I take a sup w/ creatine, but overall the diet dictates strength and endurance.

if your ever on that last lift, that last mile, or the last few minutes of a game...always push yourself and say ' whatever it takes'! 2010 should be a good year

I'd like to be there someday and it all makes sense... but it freaks me out. It just seems so strange that you can feel the immediate impact of what you eat when you are in shape. I mean, it all seems reasonable but its still strange since i've never been there.

----

I've been using the gym after work. I haven't adapted to taking meals to work but I need something to get food in my system after i'm done because it'll take me and hour to get home and then longer to get food going. I have too many things I need to do and investigate and not enough time to do it right.

I have an iphone app that claims to do the same for runs... I haven't used it yet since I really loathe running. I'd like to use it when i get my bike.

Runners world does, too. Good for those of us who are not part of Facebook. Livestrong sort of does as well. I think tracking things like that are great.

If it helps, I also keep a spreadsheet to track my running- even though it's also downloaded via my garmin. I think typing it in makes it more "real" I supposed.

If you're looking for a 1/2 marathon to run in the fall, consider coming down here and running either Grand Rapids or Detroit. The Grand Rapids course is mostly flat, and you're greeted by the race director himself as you cross the finish line.

Detroit is a lot bigger- and has two nice hills- once going up the Ambassador Bridge, and one coming up out of the Tunnel.

The Detroit half was my first one, and my plan for 2010 is to do the full there this fall.

It's a great event, but I'm sure not as intimate as GR.

Geez- I should read entire posts.

Check Active.com for races in your area. While I'll second Bob's suggestion on coming down to the LP for a race (and there's a cool 1/2 between Dexter and Ann Arbor you can still make), I bet there are some really spectacular ones up in the UP.

If the Active website doesn't have anything, 100% for sure, your local running shop will have *something*- ours have a bunch of events from local 5ks' to the multi person Dances with Dirt event.

I hope you do it- last year was my first year of running, and I have found it quite rewarding. And I can deal that Mrs Alfa is so much faster than me.

if you are seriously interested in doing it, I will get you a buddy pass and fly you out there.

Bob: Grand Rapids is high on the list. Little Sister is doing the full this year, so she (and presumably my mom) will be there. There's the one in the Soo that's on the list, too. Las Vegas would just be awesome, though...

I know there's a marathon in Duluth--anyone know if they have a 1/2, too?

Grandma's does have a half. A friend of mine used to run it every year before he started having some weird ticker trouble.
