Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Anyone know how to prevent or treat shin splints?

I would highly recommend the book "Born to Run". No, it's not a book about shin splints :) but it does take aim a the running shoe industry and how it has actually led to an increase in running related injuries (including shin splints).

It's also a great read and about much more then the shoe industry.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that we all would benefit from doing some barefoot running or running in vibrams or the like.

That's what I moved to. Even though my running is relatively limited 3-4 miles at the most, mainly to break-up my fitness routine, I am pretty pleased with the Vibram toe shoes. I had tried any number of running shoes previously, and generally ended up with shin splints and had to break off running. They take some getting used to, and are probably best for a paved trail or grass since you do feel rocks, but I like them. I also use them at the gym, and find I don't have arch/Achilles issues like I did with cross-trainers.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I'm still trying to drop another 20 lbs. My fiance and I are getting married and she wants to drop some weight so I'm in this together. I've dropped 45 pounds since August 08. She does the same things I do, but she has only lost a 5 in that time. Can anyone give me some advice on what she might need to do? Thanks in advance.

Count calories. I've used the set-up on the livestrong.com website. You can search for any number of websites that will calclulate your average daily burn of calories, and what your daily intake should be for various rates of weight loss. It is sort of a pain in the *** to type in every single thing you put in your body, but it really makes you think about it and it worked for me while I was still doing it. (its kind of impossible while on vacation in china right now and eating out continuously)

Good calf stretches will help- backside supports the front.

A good prevention- a 1" ledge under your heel, and then do down up with your toes. That will strengthen front.

From what I could tell, the Biggest Looser website does a similar function as livestrong.com. As an alternative.

To treat them, really just ice and rest for a bit. When you start back up, ease into it.

it's one of my favorite books. It's simply amazing. And funny at the same time. :)

Even dealing with that illness over the past couple days, I'm going to get back on track with my January goals hopefully today. I'm doing well.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I'm now skating three times a week, and loving it. Reminds me of back in college when I would play hockey everyday after school outdoors if I didn't have to work.

I'm playing in a Sun night adult league, a Wed morning pickup game (indoor), and Saturday afternoon pond hockey.

Good times. :)

Lucky. Worst part of leaving New England by far...

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

2010 is not starting well. The only thing I've done in the last week is play one hockey game. I haven't been to the gym since Thursday. I've been working late, so the only time I've had to go is 5 am before work, and I've reset my alarm every day.

Motivation is really my problem - I've been so tired after work that the last thing I want to do is get even less sleep by going in the morning, even though I know I'll have more energy during the day if I do. How does everyone else motivate themselves?

I also use caloriecount.about.com and nutritiondata.com.

I know if I don't exercise, I feel like crap the entire day. Sluggish, cranky, and on edge. I also have my running medals to remind me of what I've accomplished so far and am looking forward to accomplish in the future. If for nothing else, a good workout makes my food taste better.

Peer pressure. Work out with a friend, or a group, or a team.

Your tiredness is a preception, not reality. Happens to Mrs Alfa all the time- comes home from work ready to take a nap, headache, etc- and all of that is good after either a run or an hour of aerobics. She drags me, sometimes, too.... So we help each other to keep it up.

Agreed. Even after working 10-12 hours a day, I try to force myself out of the house and to the gym. Once I'm there, my "exhaustion" seems to disappear. What also helped, in my case, is that I joined a smaller gym closer to my house, so I wouldn't waste so much time sitting in traffic.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

3. Sub 5-hour marathon; can't decide whether I'm racing Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, or Grand Rapids.
I say Chicago!

Maybe make the B-Level team next season. I'm torn, because I really like the women on the C team, but I think if I push myself I could definitely improve enough to make it, since the coach told me I was one of two "bubble" players this year.
That was one of my goals for next year, but it seems that where I just moved to, I should just be excited there are womens teams. Then again I could start playing with men, the view in the locker room would certainly be better.

The trainer is very important as he/she will give you the tools to work out on your own, also. They will show you the proper way to use the machines, free weights, and cardio machines. They will help you set up an excerise plan with your goals in mind.
I agree, a good trainer can do I think there important things for you.
1) provide an efficent and effective workout plan, which it will get you the most bang for you buck in terms of time you put in.
2) provide a variety in that workout plan, you need to keep your body guessing for it to continue to lose the weight.
3) Make sure you are doing the excersies correctly and push you to your limites, proably alot harder than you can on your own.

if any of you are interested in a roadtrip, Quiz and I are doing the Las Vegas 1/2 marathon in December. After completing an Olympic triathlon in August, that should give us the time we need to train. Anybody want to join us?
I am strongly considering that. Especially since Nevada is one of the final 6 states I need to visit!!

Anyone know how to prevent or treat shin splints?
I find getting a pair of running shoes properly fit is key. I used to really struggle with shin splints in HS. Granted I did the worst possibly even for someone with flat feet, the hurdles. But thinking back, I would use proably one pair of sneakers for the entire season (indoor and outdoor). Consider how much I ran then compared to now (now is about 3-4 times a week), I proably should of been going thru 5-6 pairs a year.

Since getting my shoes properly fitted but a running store (in the boston area Marthon Sports is great, I need to find a new one in Il now). You will be given shoes that are the best fit for your fit, gate, and fitness goals. I have not had problems with shin splints at all since HS. The other nice thing about going to a running store is the will also generally back their fitting. About a year ago, brooks discountinued the shoe I was using, so I went to the similar shoe made by brooks. That shoe gave me blisters. When I went back into the store (after having worn them for 4 weeks), the gave me a new (different pair) in exchange. I was totally ready to pay outright for a new pair, but that kind of service is just hard to find these days.

Generally your local running store will also support alot of the local races.

My Goals for the year
1) Lose 50 pounds.
2) Once the snow is gone walk/bike to work 3 days a week. I purposly found an apartment closer to my job for this very reason.
3) Eat my veggies. I have already signed up for the local CSA (which delivers!), and I feel confident now that I am on my own, I will be eating alot better.
4) Complete a half marathon (spring)
5) Complete the chicago marthon (fall)
6) Find me a new hockey team

I also would like to note that these goals also line up with my plan to get out of debt. I only have the student loan, but its good sized. So I am living like a poor college student (while still budgeting for some fun) and I think I will have it paid off in 3 years.

I would like to try training for a tri again, but my shoulder still hurts from time to time. So I think I will spend this year getting healthy again, lose the weight I have been carrying around for the last 4 years, and try some dualatholns in the fall. As much as I really want to do a tri, right now destorying my shoulder just doesnt seem worth it. But I think by adding in some yoga, i can strenghthen my core. Right now the shoulder pain is just tendonitis, so I can proably make it stronger and then swimming would no longer be a concern.

I have to say I have been here for 2 days I am already eating better because I control my meals and my apartment complex does have a modest sized gym but with high quality equipment. I plan to take advantage of it starting today (Tuesday I moved all my crap in, and wednesday I spent the afternoon being aggrivated at various insituations in relation to updating my current my info).

Not sure about the better view. I play with both men and women, and most of the men are not exactly NHL athletes. A lot more flabby beer-guts than six-packs. ;) At least with the women they are typical a) more fit and b) I'm not interested anyway, so who cares?

I'm actually surprised at how many womens' teams are in the NY/CT area. My team plays 11 or 12 other teams without having to drive more than an hour and 1/2 in any direction.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Motivation is really my problem - I've been so tired after work that the last thing I want to do is get even less sleep by going in the morning, even though I know I'll have more energy during the day if I do. How does everyone else motivate themselves?

Two things that help me motivate…

1. I have a picture of myself on my fridge from my days of weighing about 40 pounds more than I do now. I never ever want to go back to that so having a picture of myself from then to look at to remind me how awful I felt helps to get my lazy butt to the gym.

2. Is a copy of my blood test results from when I was unhealthy. It was a recipe for an early grave.

Peer pressure. Work out with a friend, or a group, or a team.

I agree with this too. My wife and I use it on each other to get us to the gym when one of us is not feeling like it. I usually get the “Well I am going with or without you. You can either be lazy and watch tv or go to the gym and feel better about yourself.”

What also helped, in my case, is that I joined a smaller gym closer to my house, so I wouldn't waste so much time sitting in traffic.

Totally agree with this one. Find a gym that is as close to work or home as possible. It doesn’t matter if it is smaller or not as nice. Being there is the important part. My gym is less than a block from my house. It’s not the biggest and doesn’t have the newest equipment but getting there is a snap. It takes me less than 3 minutes to walk there. I love that part the most!

Especially since Nevada is one of the final 6 states I need to visit!!

You’ve never been to Vegas?!?!?! ;)

What works for me is not to think about whether or not I want to go - no rationalization or validation of why I shouldn't go. Just go. Once you're there, you have to do something, and you'll be glad you went. I should note I have never applied this theory on a regular basis at 5:00 am. :) I can't function then, unless it's something I'm required to do before going to work. I have to go to the gym either on the way home from work or weekend mornings. If I go home first after work, I won't leave again. I'm also usually more motivated with a class than working out by myself.

You are proably are proably right. There were some women with very nice bodies on my old team. One of them I asked into the studio specifically because of her abs. My merry band of lesbians (as I called my team), also cracked me up. They are one of the things I am proably going to miss most about Mass.

You’ve never been to Vegas?!?!?! ;)
Why is that weird. I dont really like to gamble, althought I do like flashing lights and buttons. I have been to 44 other states, Nevada just isnt one of them. I would take living in yellowstone over vegas anyday!
