Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Slightly jealous on both counts.

I want to try yoga. Not necessarily the hot kind, but I've heard yoga is great for flexibility.

Boxing is another thing I've always wanted to try, but the clubs around me are so expensive!

go to LAboxing.com, you'll get a coupon for a free training session. Just be prepared to show up. I did one of these a few years ago; I wanted to quit 3 minutes in.

Yoga is great; Wii Fit can get you started.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Pat, are these weights what you are maxing out on, or what you are using to do say 3 sets of 10? I only ask because where you're just starting out with weight training, I wouldn't even think of maxing out right now. Light weight and high reps would be the way to go.

Those are my current high values... 3 sets of 5 for all except deadlift... (1 of 5).

I've been doing light weight (basically whatever i can do) and high reps for 2 years now... I've been in the gym for 20 of the last 24 months (4 months to finish school).

If this isn't the way I should go I'd like a good reason because 1) I'm getting bored with standard rotation of machines, weights, and cardio (of course I need new music too which is adding to the issue), 2) this is showing some progress.

My pattern, at least since the start of summer of 08 has been cardio followed by using weights focusing on certain parts of the body... before that I did cardio then upper body and lower body since I didn't really know much. I've been doing some variety of weights the whole time though i've become better about knowing what to do. It wouldn't be fair to say that i haven't done anything or that I'm new to working out with weights. But I started off weak in the first place.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Today's workout:

30 minutes (+5 cooldown) on elliptical
weight machines--found out my left shoulder is more messed up than I thought, I could not do the forward press without pain.

Paid our first month's membership to the Y (we get the second month free because of our employer's insurance) and signed up for personal consultations with a wellness counselor.

The next project is trying to convince ELCAsoccer that we can't just eat whatever we want anymore.

Running group first run for the winter/spring season. Good 8 mile run.

I was pacing the 10:00 group, and we finished at 9:58. :)

Feel great!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

So I had gotten the wife a Wii and Wii fit for xmas, and I used it today as a scale, since we have a really cheap one in the house. On December 22nd, I was weighed at my doctor and it registered 305. Today, on the Wii Fit, it registered 293.5. If this is at all accurate then that would be 11.5 pounds in a month. I could live with that progress for the next 6 months (but know that won't happen as the speed of weight loss levels off after a while).

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Depends on what you are weighing yourself on: is the Wii Fit on tile or on carpet?

That radically changes the weight registered.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I find my Wii is accurate when compared to my bathroom scale and the scale at the gym.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I haven't weighed myself in over a week. By not making myself a slave to the scale, I've felt a newfound freedom when it comes to food, learning how to add healthy fat, enjoying a slice or two of gourmet cheese, having an extra helping of pasta once in awhile, etc.

As long as I practice portion control, I should be fine...

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

You know what? Trying to run outside in the winter in the UP sucks.

I have some pilates workout videos saved on YouTube, but do you all have any suggestions for indoor exercises I can do? I don't have access to a gym, so I'm on my own.

indoor shoulder dips? There are options out there even if its just stealing a friend's Wii... I've used Wii tennis games on idle days... not a good substitute for gym use but good when I don't feel like getting my butt onto a bike or a treadmill.

There are some decent DVDs out there. Most of what I do that doesn't involve a gym is core exercises and exercises with dumbbells, not true cardio.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Burpees, the ultimate workout.

Ugh, the ultimate hell, you mean? I don't know if there is something wrong with me (and not in the mental sense, because I know I'm insane), but I get lightheaded every time I try those.

Proper layers, Yak-trax. When used correctly, I can safely say that I've run at 5 F, with ice and snow. Did 10 miles that way. The first mile sucks, that's for sure, but after that, it's not too bad.

And it toughens you up. At 12 miles, with 1.1 to go, you may need that toughness.

Or at 20 miles, if you are so brave.

I'm printing this off and putting it up on my wall.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

And I thought about it... I will be running Chicago later this year. Registration opens on February 1, and I need to register ASAP if I'm to enter.
I was seriously considering doing chicago, but after talking to someone here who has ran pretty much every half, marathon and ultra in the area I am having second thoughts. It would be my first full marathon, so now I am thinking maybe smaller for my first. Then again the only marathon that I really care about running is I would like to do Boston someday. Otherwise signing up for events that are smaller or neat themes is fine with me. Like the Covered Bridge Half Marathon.

I like the idea of us USCHOers having a contingent in Vegas for the half. I think that would be really fun. :)
Keep me posted on the registration date. I know in all it is likely once I start getting some work to do here, I will be proably be on the board less often.

Yoga is great to because it helps you relax/destress which I think between that and the core training why it is such a good activity to include into your workout mix.
I have done kickboxing workouts which are pretty bad ***.

Mmmmm cheese is sooooooooo my weakness.

you know what I really like doing right now is pretty much any julian michaels workout DVD. Its an arse kicker but it is short, so its easy to fit in on those crazy days. I think you can find them for under $20 on amazon, or your local library may even have them if you want to just try it out first.

Burpees, the ultimate workout.

I want to pass out just thinking of those.

The Health/Wellness teacher at the school where I sub has all of her DVD's. I'm thinking about asking if I can borrow them before I make the purchase.
