Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

The Health/Wellness teacher at the school where I sub has all of her DVD's. I'm thinking about asking if I can borrow them before I make the purchase.

She does a very good job of mixing in cardio with weight training and all you need is a set of hand weights. So for very little investment you get a pretty well rounded workout. I know there are so many biggest loser branded products, so I was hestiant to even mention it. But like i said they are really great when you are short on time too.

But yeah definatly if you have a chance to borrow them and check them out I would go that route. Because people respond differently to different activities, and if you dont like the workout (or more importantly feel the benfit of it) you are not going to keep doing it, no matter what the activity.

I have been using the 30day shred lately.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I've gotten quite comfortable very quickly with using the elliptical at the Y, and found that music makes the time go faster than TV, though today I listened to my iPod while watching old film from the Winter X Games. I'm doing 30 minutes just straight up, no intervals or resistance, because my goal right now is cardio. I meet with a wellness coach on Wednesday, and I'm making a list of needs:

1--Cardio (to treat SAD holistically, to raise endorphins, and hopefully to get fitter, and for endurance regarding goal # 3 below)

2--weight loss (though I've read that one would have to go two hours per day, six days per week to get this effect)

3--strength training--I play a bass drum in a pipe-and-drum band. That sucker is *heavy.* Erector spinae, abs, biceps/triceps, traps, pecs. Special problem: my left rotator cuff is shot to hell from swimming/swim teaching/lifeguarding, and my right one isn't too much better from volleyball (overtraining in high school learning the overhand serve). Even the lighter drum, which the other bass player has, gets to be heavy about two miles into a five-mile parade. Right now, I also work in the backroom of a store, so heavy lifting would be made easier with some muscle toning.

4--relaxation. To that end, I've already decided to start a beginning yoga class on Thursday evenings, beginning next week.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Proper layers, Yak-trax. When used correctly, I can safely say that I've run at 5 F, with ice and snow. Did 10 miles that way. The first mile sucks, that's for sure, but after that, it's not too bad.

And it toughens you up. At 12 miles, with 1.1 to go, you may need that toughness.

Or at 20 miles, if you are so brave.
Also:

-Run into the wind on your way out; the wind coming back will give you an excellent negative split time.
-You can also find a short loop near your house and run repeats.
-Run midday, if possible.
-Wear thick socks.

What?? You can lose weight simply by cutting the number of calories you eat, you don't need to do cardio for 2 hours a day 6 days a week. Follow some of the advice earlier in this thread for finding how many calories you need to maintain your weight, cut below that, and track how much you are putting in your body every day. The fun part with days you do cardio is you get to eat more b/c you can subtract the calories you burn out of the total. The main point is that weight loss is all about calories in<calories out.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I did stability work last night for the first time ever and it was amazing. I have pretty good balance (I've been riding horses and playing hockey my entire life), and my legs were still shaking.

Definitely need to work more of that into my routine!

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

So my brother's g/f is prepping to run a half marathon in San Diego in June to fund leukemia research. She needs to not only train for the run, but also train in proper eating/cooking. Does anyone know of a book, basically healthy cooking for the world's worst cook, and cooking terms for the kitchen inept?

First off, I assume she's doing Team in Training, so bravo for her. If you can provide a link to her fundraising page, that would be excellent.

As for beginner's cookbooks, try Cooking Basics from Betty Crocker. There are some healthy recipes in there, it lists full nutritional information, and has cooking terms for the inept.

have her check the Runners World website. They have a ton of good stuff on there. I visit it probably twice a day just to get running tips and recipes.

Also, January is coming to a close. How did everyone do? I'll have my totals posted after I do my "graduation" swim tomorrow (swimming 900 yards instead of my usual 800)

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Heck of an 8 mile run this morning. Started the run at 7 F ambient, with a -4 F windchill. Man, it takes a LONG time to warm up at those temps. (for the record- Nike dry-fit base, REI long sleeve 2nd, light windbreaker 3rd, Nike dry-fit legs, smartwool socks, ballcap+headband for top, small headband for chin, light gloves and sunglasses- not bad)

But got pretty comfortable after a while.

At mile 5's water stop, though, we took too long- got warm (felt good), and started to sweat. The next mile was pretty uncomfortable, as we ran through a cross wind.

Still, finished strong (for me at least).

As Sloe says, Janurary is coming to an end- so far so good, training is going as expected. Weight is all over the place (+- 3lb), but I'm more conerned about the miles and the type of miles. I'd like to think I'm on track for a 2 hr half in June.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

as I called it yesterday, graduation day!

- Ran 22.56 miles, averaging a 10:46.9 pace. This is a little slower than I would have liked, but as long as my averages keep going down, I'm growing
- Swam 4.04 miles, averaging 36:42.33 per mile. This is much improved on last year and a sign of good things to come!
- Stationary bike 3 times for a total distance of 20.1 miles. While I haven't been on my bike yet this year, I am looking to do this in February

Other assorted things:
- 1 hot yoga class
- 1 day of skiing
- 1 treadmill run
- 2 of my treadmill sprints
- 3 dedicated lifting sessions

Things that went well:

- running was certainly good. Ran injury free in January. Kept to my goal of 6 miles a week
- swimming also went well. Improving dramatically on my swim times as well as my form
- the hot yoga class made me feel amazing; it's definitely on the short list of stuff to do
- hitting the stationary bike at all is hard. Hitting it a few times is an accomplishment

Things that could use improving:

- I need to lift more. Lifting 3 times in a month is unacceptable
- Must get out on my bike. Man up.
- I wanted to do my treadmill workout once a week...try to get that done

Goals for February:

- 8 miles running a week
- 2000 meters in the pool a week
- bike at least once a week
- treadmill sprint once a week
- lift 1-2 times a week

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Despite a useless week with an injury and a useless three days with food poisoning, I don't feel terrible about my January.

In January I did:
-Eight hockey practices or clinics
-Four games
-Three classes at the gym
-Four 1/2 hour training sessions
-40 miles on the stationary bike
-2 or 3 times running on the treadmill
-4 dedicated lifting sessions

February's goals:
(in addition to my typical 2-3 hockeys practices or games a week):
-2 lifting sessions a week
-Working in more cardio (running more, primarily) - I'd like to do 2 a week.
-Stairs, somehow, at least twice a week. I'm doing a stair climb at the end of the month (walking only) and I think I'm woefully unprepared.
- Eat better. I've gotten really lazy about eating correctly, and the bout with food poisoning definitely didn't help, as I really didn't eat much of anything for close to a week.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Thank you; I donated to her cause and I wish her the best!

As for me, I ran an average of 40 minutes per day last month, about 3-4 miles per day. I still would like to start yoga or Pilates, plus I need to start lifting.

Diet wise, still hovering in the high-140s, but since I joined OA, I'm learning to relax around food, learning what carbs are good for me, and I'm not drinking as much caffeine as I used to. However, as the poem says, "I've got miles to go before I sleep..."

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I've dropped some weight after the holidays. I was 290 in August 08, but I'm down to 240. I was at 237, but I had the holidays happen and went up 8 lbs.

My fiance on the other hand is still working and getting nothing for all of her word. She eats healthier than I do, but nothing is working. I tried all the advice that I was given earlier in the thread, but it hasn't helped. She's really frustrated and depressed. Any more advice for me?

If it's really true that she's eating well and exercising frequently, there is the potential that she has a metabolic problem (thyroid issues make it very difficult to lose weight). There are ways to boost your metabolism a little bit (green tea, cayenne pepper, and B-vitamins come to mind), but if it's a huge issue, she might want to see a doctor.

She was given thyroid meds, but she was taken off of them after one month because her level went down to an "acceptable" level. She is changing doctors. (Thank God.) So she is going to get looked at in the next couple of weeks. I never liked her doc because she would go for the quick fix despite the problems my fiance has been having. I am going to pick up some green tea and vitamins for her first. Thanks for your help, BUT09.

Speaking of Runner's World, try the Breakfast Sundae recipe they have in this month's issue. Made it this morning and it left me feeling satisfied.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

Well... January wasn't a great month. I only logged about 20 miles throughout, and 4 Pilates workouts. My biggest challenges right now are 1. Working on consistency and 2. Learning to eat the right amounts of the right things.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

1/12th of the year is up and I feel like I have over trained a little. Hurting myself on the bench was indication of that. I have plenty to do, but find the gym as my only escape from everything else as I own a company and live with the other owners. thus the 6 days of lifting without a break lately.

I would say the highlight has been doing a 20 rep squat routine , which is now up to 225 for 20 reps. Easily the hardest part of this year is not having puck. Heck, don't even have a good place to do dryland work.

Re: Diet and Exercise 2010: Whatever it takes

I don't know if it's over-training (which I can't imagine, as I spent all of last year playing 6-8 times a week, and I'm down to 2-3 now), or what, but I feel like I'm hitting a serious wall in hockey, potentially even regressing. I don't know how to get through it, and it's effecting my work in the gym (or lack thereof, since I don't really feel like going) and what I eat (I've been really bad lately about eating junk).

It's extremely frustrating, because it's not even consistant. I'll have nights where I feel like I'm myself, and nights where I feel like someone who laced up skates for the first time last week. Has anyone had issues with this sort of situation, and how have you worked through it? I keep thinking that playing more is the answer, but if I continue to play badly it's just going to **** me off/depress me.
