Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer
I'll be dammed. Lynn Henning actually wrote an intelligent column
I actually agree with most of what he wrote, except that I don't think they're going 10-30 over the next 40. They're not exactly looking at 25-15, either, but I don't think they're going to crash and burn that badly.
Well, maybe I was crazy for suggesting they would only win 69 games, but I did anticipate this. Winning 8-10 more games isn't really any different except it buys a pitcher of suds, which isn't too hard to handle with you anyways.
Boesch is still going to be a decent player and we all knew the slump was going to happen. Cabrera has proved that he has overcome his issues, at least up to this point. Let's see what happens when he is the only one producing and the attitude in the clubhouse changes. Ordonez' boat sailed when they didn't cut him loose last season. He has proven to be an adequate outfielder and a solid .300 hitter, but he isn't worth 15MM. Still, the talk to dump him now is ludicrous. Guillen. Ditto, although it is a toss up who is a worse fielder- Magglio, Damon or him. Outside of DH, there is no position for this guy that will hide his deficient legs and sometimes erratic arm. Damon is the guy I thought he'd be- some clutch hits, a solid .280 average- but an adventure in the outfield.
Give Kelly, Raburn and Worth credit for trying to stretch AAA talent at the MLB level. Shortstop is probably the most glaring position right now and there is no hope in the future unless they give away the store. I like Santiago, but he is not an everyday SS.
Inge was having a decent year, just bad luck. They are hooped without him which really speaks to how barren their minor system is.
Avila and Lardo- Abbott and Costello would look better in the old english D. What a disappointment. Second worst position right now, with second base right behind.
Pitching: Even the ace is having trouble winning, with shredded talent behind him. Besides that, the said truth has been covered, both int he starting rotation and in the bullpen.
Hard to say who is more valuable on the team- Cabrera or Valverde. They would be 10 games under .500 right now if it wasn't for either of them.
Oh, and Fien is down, Sizemore is back up.
Henning is right about one thing. Take the lumps this season, put on the flak jacket instead of the parachute.
