Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer
Okay, mid-term grades. These grades are based on the 1st half of the season, ending at the All Star Break.
Starting Pitching:
Justin Verlander: A-. Clearly the ace, but there have been a few too many games where we’ve given him a 3-4 run lead and he’s given it back.
Max Scherzer: B-. Probably a kind grade here, due to his improvement after he returned from Toledo. A disaster before that, but dominant at times after his return.
Jeremy Bonderman: C+. I don’t know what to do with him. He's not a deep thinker, and likely never to be a pitcher, but more of a thrower.
Rick Porcello: D. I expected a little bit of a dropoff, but I didn’t expect him to be this bad.
Armando Galarraga: C+. The perfect game that he got screwed out of is an outlier compared with what he’s done the rest of the season.
Dontrelle Willis: C-. Grading on a bit of a curve here. I can't help it. I like the guy. He wasn’t as bad as everyone made him out to be in Detroit. His ERA was under 5.00, even after his inability to find strike zone without the use of GPS. That’s not completely unreasonable out of a #5 starter.
Andy Oliver: INC. If I had to give a grade, it wouldn’t be good. He’s not quite ready.
Relief Pitching:
Fu Te Ni: D-. Next, please.
Eddie Bonine: B-. I’m not a fan of Bonine. Quite frankly, I don’t think he has the stuff to be a major leaguer. I don’t know what the fascination is with people thinking he could be a starter. To me, he’s Jason Grilli, after you take off about 8-10 mph and add in a knuckleball.
Brad Thomas: C+. I give him some points for his spot starts.
Phil Coke: A. Rock solid in the 1st half of the season.
Joel Zumaya: A. Before the elbow went POP, of course.
Jose Valverde: A+. A legitimate Cy Young candidate here. No, I’m not joking. His 1st half numbers are off the charts.
Ryan Perry: D. You can’t throw with that velocity and get hit that hard, kid.
Enrique Gonzalez: INC. A nice start, though.
Weinhardt, Schlereth, Fien, Figaro: INC
Jay Sborz: ………Let’s be nice here and give him an INC as well.
Catching:
Gerald Laird: F. Hitting sub-.200 at the break is unacceptable
Alex Avila: D. Folks, this is why we don’t put too much stock in September numbers. Yes, I got burned on this one, too. Hitting .220 with a sub-.350 SLG isn’t going to get it done, either.
Infield:
Miguel Cabrera: A+. I really don't need to comment further, do I?
Scott Sizemore: F. Wasn’t ready, as I had feared.
Adam Everett: F+. The glove was adequate, but see Gerald Laird for the rest.
Ramon Santiago: B. Watch his at bats. He’s pushing 200 ABs and his SLG is lower than his OBP. A part time player, but nothing more under any circumstances.
Danny Worth: B-. A work in progress here. They’ve got to crap or get off the pot with him after this season. We’ve got to address the SS position.
Brandon Inge: B-. The power has not returned like the Tigers have hoped. The thing is, there’s not much to choose from when it comes to 3B in the free agent market this fall. If I had to guess, he’s our 3B for the next 1-2 years. He might be the tallest midget out there.
Carlos Guillen: B+. Better than I expected at 2B. He’ll do nicely until Sizemore is ready to take over.
Outfield:
Magglio Ordonez: A. Just what we’ve reasonably hoped he would and could be.
Austin Jackson: A-. Awesome start, but has tailed off significantly since early May. His average has declined consistently from month to month. Something to watch for the 2nd half of the season
Brennan Boesch: A+. Talk about coming out of nowhere. Likely Rookie of the Year.
Johnny Damon: D. Disappointing production out of him, both from an average standpoint and the power as well. And yes, I did expect more than 6 HR at the break.
Ryan Raburn: D. Disappointing year out of him as well, all across the board.
Don Kelly: C. A utility player that fills in very occasionally. Not much expected, but that’s okay. We haven’t got much production out of him, either.
Coaching and front office:
Jim Leyland: A-. I have only two complaints about Marlboro Jimmy. One was the disaster in Seattle where he left Ryan Perry in about 26 batters too long. The other is when he puts Raburn or Kelly in the lineup, he puts them in the same place as the player he’s resting. That works for Inge or Worth, because they’re hitting at the bottom of the order. But Raburn should not be hitting 3rd in this lineup.
Lloyd McClendon: D-. I still have no idea what kind of game plan these hitters take to the plate at times. Too many times I’ve seen guys swing from their *** when a pitcher has just walked the prior hitter on 4 pitches, or when a reliever is fresh into a game and they don’t have a feel for him. Or they’ll have a pitcher on the ropes and all of a sudden it’s a 6-pitch inning.
Rick Knapp: B. The problems with Porcello, Ni, Perry, Bonderman and Willis have to lay partly at his feet. His biggest thing coming over from Minnesota was getting guys to throw strikes, and some of these guys couldn’t hit a bull in the *** with a boat paddle. He does get high marks for Coke and Valverde, however.
Dave Dombrowski: A. His trade for Jackson, Scherzer and Schlereth paid dividends, even given how rocky Scherzer’s start has been. And don't forget, Phil Coke came over as part of that trade, too. Brennan Boesch was a stroke of front office genius as well. I’m on record as thinking that some fans are way too critical of the job Dombrowski has done over the last 7 years. The franchise is being built the right way, IMO.
