When was the last time a MLB umpire gave the slightest indication he gave a flying **** about anything other than his own ego? Shut up, Harold.

I wouldn't be so sure. We're due to get Angel Hernandez, and he'll try to eject Sparky and Illitch on a ball that hit the peanut vendor that he called strike 4.

Ditto. Just saw the clip on ESPN.com. That wasn't even close to being safe. Not that it would matter, but I could see if that call happened earlier in the game. But the last out? Of a potential perfect game? Ridiculous. They should protest, have it reviewed, and have him awarded the perfect game after the fact. And that ump should be suspended.

I was very surprised to hear that as well. I generally like Reynolds, but he's off-base here.


I listen to MLB Network on XM during the day, and Kevin Kennedy in particular. I'm going to be really curious to hear his take on this in the morning.

Rather than rant and throw a fit, you can go ahead and guess what I think of the whole thing.

Gallaraga will become a folk hero and will be remembered longer for having gotten the shaft than if he got the perfecto.

Not that it changes the outcome, but Joyce did go to Galarraga after the game and say he was sorry.

He admitted guilt. From the AP article:

"I just cost that kid a perfect game," Joyce said. "I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay."

"It was the biggest call of my career," said Joyce, who became a full-time major league umpire in 1989.

"I don't blame them a bit or anything that was said," Joyce said. "I would've said it myself if I had been Galarraga. I would've been the first person in my face, and he never said a word to me."

Props to him for admitting it. Umpires are going to miss the occasional call, sometimes in important situation. It's when they act offended when anyone dares question their judgement that it bugs me. Like when that dick umpire tried to pick a fight with a Milwaukee pitcher a couple weeks ago after he blew a call.

It was stated on another thread that you can only protest rule interpretations, not judgment calls.
