Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer
I stand by these comments. We've now got questions with respects to the bottom 3 of the rotation, and our starting 2B and #3 starter are both now in Toledo.
Pretty accurate after forty games. Plus, they have no more west coast trips after they finish this one and have already gone 5-2 against NYY and the Bosox. That's a bonus.
I may be buying Hammer a pitcher of suds for my underwhelming faith, but I'll trade my bet for that 90+ win claim oh Billy Blue Skies just proclaimed. Maybe I can get him to buy both of us the beer, Hammer. I'll wager the whole night of brews if they win 90+ and take the wildcard, too. This team is even with their record last season- you remember the team that choked away a 7 game lead in the last three weeks. To surpass last year's record will take a manager of the year type performance out of Leyland considering that they have not had major injuries yet (okay, Guillen, Seay and Miner aside), all star like numbers for 162 games out of the guys that should produce (Damon, Maggs, Miggy) and above average production from the rookies (Jackson, Boesch, etc.)
90+ wins may be doable for any team in the east (outside of Baltimore) that gets to play in our division. Why? Because teams like NYY and Tampa have a legitimate starting pitching rotation, not this AAA roulette we have going after Verlander. Porcello, Shertzer, Willis, Bonderman and Gallaraga aren't going to strike fear into every team, especially on the road. (Oakland is as offensively inept and Seattle, BTW.) The bullpen may be lights out right now, but they can't do it all season. It's not like we are running rampant over teams in our division, outside of the Tribe.
And I like Boesch- but it's more realistic to assume he'll hit around .270 with 15 HR and 70 RBI's than what he is doing now. You can't count on contributions from rookies every game all season- and that's what we are getting at 2b, CF and occasionally at 3b and in LF and RF now.
Oh, and as far as the bottom half of the lineup- Everett, Laird-o/Avila, Inge and the rookie dujour.... it will bite this team in tight games.
I think a good season projection would be 86-76 now. I think that is top end. At least it would keep them in the race until September.
