Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Verlander leaves with 2 outs in the 7th. I'll happily take it.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

I read somewhere that if the Tigers are in contention, they will (or should) trade for a shortstop that produces offense. Guillen's not going to get one. They'd probably have to throw in Bonderman or someone to get a really good shortstop. Thoughts?

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Well, if they're going to throw in Bonderman, we're fixing one leak by creating another one. That's going to put a hole in the rotation, no matter what we think of Bonderman (and you know what I think of him at the moment). If we're getting a shortstop with power, it's going to take one of the younger arms (think Casey Crosby, Andrew Oliver). If Brent Dlugach continues to hit in Toledo (big IF there), he may make an appearance if necessary.

Guillen is likely to provide us with a low level (A-AA) prospect at this point in his career.

Oh, and we interrupt this post to present you.............

(see next post).

6-0 FINAL.

Tigers take 3 of 4 from the Yankees.

To continue, I don't go burning down the farm system to get to 85-88 wins this season. This is a year of transition, as the farm system is beginning to produce everyday talent as well as pitching. We've got holes for sure, but we've got limited options, at least as far as this season goes.

Santiago/Everett are at least serviceable at shortstop. They're not well-below average for most teams number 8 or 9 hitters. They'd have to give up way too much to make a significant upgrade at that position.

Guillen is pretty much done in terms of value. I'd take what I could get for him, even if it was just a handshake and not having to eat most of the rest of his salary.

The Tigers just don't have a lot of tradeable assets right now, unless you can find someone dumb enough to take a Clete Thomas or Ryan Raburn in exchange for some pitching. I agree with Hammer. The best move is probably to stand pat and take however many wins you can scratch out this year, and then really start making moves in a year or two when they get a bunch of money freed up.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

There's over $34 million coming off the books next season just from Bonderman ($12.5), Willis ($12) and Robertson ($9.6). Now, Verlander's salary virtually doubles next year (+6 mil), so that takes us down to ~ $28 million in savings, and there really aren't that many guys we're really going to have to shell out for in arbitration. I'm figuring about $5 million in raises next season. That puts us about $22-23 million lower on next year's payroll, from a rough and brief look at things. At that point we've got some more flexibility to do some things.

Oh, and regarding Guillen: no one is taking that salary, even only for this year and next. Teams don't have $26 million anymore for 35 year old players who have been injury prone for the last 4-5 years (and yes, it's been that long).

Closer to $30 million unless they want to resign Damon.

No one is going to take all of Guillen's contract, but if he's healthy around the trade deadline, someone may be willing to pay at least a portion of his contract for the extra bat.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Well, it happened. Figaro is the one sent to Toledo.

They're basically calling up an extra outfielder for 2 days, as they're going to need a starter for Sunday, and all signs point to Galararaga making that start.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Big Papi took time out from his precipitous decline to hit a 450-foot HR over the name wall in right center.

5-0 with one out in the first. It's gonna be a long night, I think.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

At this rate, sometime around October 4th.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Yes. Let's throw Ortiz a fat one right in his happy zone. That always works well.

6-1 Red Sox.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

WTH are you guys trying to do?!? Make sure Ortiz keeps his spot in the lineup for the next 4 months? :(
:D

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

I think Scherzer is going to take care of that all by himself.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Wow. That Danny Bard kid throws fire. I mean Joel Zumaya-caliber fire.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Not quite Zumaya velocity, but pretty close.

It's that mid-80s curveball that will make him a star -- or not. His changeup is too fast (>90). The curve had a little snap to it tonight. When it floats, he's toast. Not much movement on the fastball, so when he can't find the strike zone w/o slowing down to 96, he's also toast.

When his command is good and his curveball is sharp, the kid is fun to watch.

Re: Detroit Tigers 2010: Streaker is going to buy me some beer

Dontrelle gone after 3 1/3 and 7 walks. By far the worst outing of the year. I knew right away he didn't have it tonight.

3-1 Sox, top 4.
