It's not, which is what I think you are saying. It's the (slow) start of a bigger solution.
If someone thought Stafford would lead this team to a near-.500 or better record........I want what they are smoking.

A lot of the complaints today are because he threw five INTs and it's crazy. Rookie QBs thrown into the fire on bad teams are destined to have bad games. Last week his receivers let him down for dropping everything thrown at them and this week the coaches seemed to want to make him throw it every down.
Every year is a building year for the Lions and this one is no different as its the first year after Millen conspired with WCF to make sure Detroit Lions football would be irrelevant for a good long time. Taking a sh-t on a kid who has nothing around him to work with aside from ONE receiver who's worth a daamn is crazy.

Stafford is a start. Megatron (CalJo, as you put it
) is another brick. Kevin Smith? Servicable I guess, but he'll do for now, while you build the other needs (and more important needs). It's gonna be a 5-year job, and that's if everything falls into place.

Smart free agency signings can cut that time down. Also actually being active in the free agent market as well as drafting well would help. Pettigrew, Stafford and Delmas all, so far, look like solid picks.

While Stafford had a very bad game for at least a second time this season, I don't think he's the problem. So I agree Stafford is a start. Although, I'm interested in seeing his and Johnson's relationship for the future- they were from different planets at times yesterday.
and I think Smith is more than serviceable- he's shown some speed an agility.
For the O, it's the line. And forget the draft- it takes more time to develop a high quality O lineman than it does a QB. Use the draft to trade for players. Solid, team players. If Matthew wasn't so hurried, he would have enough time to check through mutliple reads even before going to the primary. If the line wasn't so bad, he and calvin would not have to make sure they are on the same planet for quick reads. etc etc. It's all the line.
But it's the defense that really bugs me. It's like there's something in the water here in SE MI- they covered just as bad as Michigan does now. How does a 2 win team with a decent QB have a best ever day???? Oh, yea, play the Lions. the line is bad, but worse yet the backs are worse. Or is it the scheme? But all in all, they seem to be easy to assess, and then pick apart as the game goes on.

Cunningham doesn't have much to work with either. He's got a couple linebackers, two turnips and an onion, and he has to conjure up a defense out of that.
The cornerbacks are nickel and dime backs in any competent secondary, and they're being asked to start here. Anthony Henry left his last team because they asked him to move from corner to safety because they didn't think he was fast enough to play corner anymore. When we picked him up we counted on him to be a starter at corner. Philip Buchanon has bounced around the league a bit, and there's a reason why. The others (Will James and Co.) would be 3rd and 4th cornerbacks on any respectable defense, and now they're part of the revolving door starting at corner as well.
Louis Delmas is a start at safety, and Ko Simpson might have been a nice pickup. But other than that, the safeties are not good, either.
The defensive line has not been able to pressure the quarterback at all. Avril is inconsistent, Dwyane White was a Rod Marinelli guy that was a backup in Tampa, and the middle of the defensive line is either past its prime or really isn't going to do much.
It's hard for Cunningham to make filet mignon out of spoiled hamburger with wet charcoal to cook it with.

This isn't the Rams or Panthers or Redskins -- you are going in the right direction. It will be ugly for a while, but there's a silver lining there (draft picks). Get it, Lions, silver?

I like Jim Schwartz and think that if he's given talent, he'll succeed. I also think Mayhew has done ok, some good some bad. But that's a step in the right direction for this team.
I think they're both behind the 8 ball because they have a team that is devoid of good NFL talent at almost every position and they're starting a rookie at QB. That will doom almost anybody.
Next year the Lions should be a 5-6 win team. Two years from now they should be back to the usual 8-8. In three years they'll be competitive....just in time for the lockout!
