Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

We've got two hurt QB's 6 weeks in. We need O-linemen first.

With nothing to offer that they can't afford to lose before the trade deadline they'll have to do it with free agency and the draft. And getting free agents to be a part of a rebuilding project is always a tough sell no matter how good the money is.

IMO they need to get the best OL they can in free agency and do the same in round one of the draft. Next priority IMO is LB, and third is DB.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

I'm not a Lions fan, so this is coming without a bias...If I were the Lions, and just drafted a franchise-type QB and gave him a HUGE contract, I would spend that top 5 pick on the very best offensive tackle I could draft. If there aren't any top 5 caliber takles, trade down, get another pick and take the best tackle available. The Lions need to protect the investment they made in Stafford. O-line, O-line, O-line. Yeah, they might still suck next year, but down the road, it will pay big dividends.

Well, that was the glass half full/empty discussion on sports radio around here prior to the draft. Whether to take a qb with the #1 (Sanchez v. Stafford) OR, as many of the media pundits wanted, take impact d-line or O-line players... and I say, to do that, they would have had to trade down as you suggested, yet no one was going to offer value for the pick. The sane argument was, the O-line is a sieve and Stafford would get injured. Well, it was a matter of time, so the Lions just bit the bullet and took him in hopes of building around him and Pettigrew.

The pick that baffled most people was the TE pick, Pettigrew. He has been slow to development and also has been injured. They could have picked up better value so high in the draft. The Delmas pick was excellent, but there are too many holes up front to fill. If their top players stay healthy and want to stay here, it may take three drafts to get to the point where the Lions will be respectable again.

Right now, I'd take 4 average linemen, one above average center, and one above avererage left tackle. That would be enough of an improvement to win a few games. And, more importantly, keep the D off the field a little more so that they can rest. We don't need Pro Bowlers at every position right now, just a good core.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

This just in, due to a lack of ticket sales, the Lion's game against BYE will not be broadcast on TV this week.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

BYE scored on the first play of the game and got the 2-point conversion. 8-0 BYE, 14:21 to go in the 1st.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

**** it!! Lion's just score a long TD, but the line got called for holding.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Well, at least the Lions managed to go back to the locker room only down 10 points.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Oh thank God, I thought the game was going to get into OT.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Game ball goes to the Lions receivers! 8 dropped balls in the first half! You had a full two weeks to prepare for one of the three worst teams in the NFL and you prove to everyone that no one will take your title as "the NFL's worst"!

Okay, enough about the season, lets concentrate on the draft now. Without Megatron playing, this team is unwatchable!

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Time for some positive spin.

Thanks to the Lions, fans in St Louis don't have to suffer through the embarassment of a 0'fer season.

We are more in the drivers seat to get some fine, young talent from the college ranks. Is this overated, slow, but large offensive lineman, or taleted but disgruntled wide reciever year?

No reason to spend 3 hours in front of the TV, since it's not shown. And since it's fall, raking leaves is an important chore. (although, for those of you outside of SE MI, who CAN watch, this still applies)

With one win, nobody else is paying attention to the Lions. Less focus on Detroit as a region.

Less attendance means that Ford Field will be in tip top shape for the Frozen Four. One could say the same about the hotels that are not full.

Any others?

Oddly enough, Ford Motor actually announced a 3rd quarter profit of almost $1B, so all isn't lost here in SE MI. We need the stock to go up a bunch, so the Ford family can sell some and use it on the Lions.

We all know this isn't happening. Ever.

Ford would need to collapse for good things to happen to the Lions because then, presumably, they might have to sell the team to someone who takes an active part in giving a sh-t about winning. Ford runs the football team the way they run the automotive side of things, if they turn a profit or don't lose as much as the others, it's been a good year.

Well, if that's really the case, then I hope that the Lions suffer for a good looooong time. Ford Motor needs to do well for me. Much higher priority than some silly little game, again, for me.

Suffering since the late 1950's isn't enough for one franchise?

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Even though almost all of us would love it if Ford sold the team, I don't see it ever happening. Until Sr. kicks the bucket I think this franchise will be sentenced to the depths of the NFL's worst teams.
