Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Watching the replay, it looks like Stafford said, "It's out!" to the sidelines after that TD.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Wow, Stafford is one tough SOB! What a great and thrilling end to the game. After seeing Sanchez tumble week after week, I think we made the right choice. This team should be something in a year or two.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Besides, Rogers would have tried to eat Stafford.

Come HERE! Get IN ma BELLY!

The Lions just preserved the fact that Cleveland still sucks worse than Detroit in many facets. We'll see if LeBron can actually bring a title home to that town and not choke again. The Indians had their chances. The Browns did in the 80's. :p

The Lions will still get a top five draft choice without having to worry about setting the bonus slot for the #1 pick.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Stafford is 2-4 his last 6 starts, Sanchez is 1-6 his last 7 starts

Interestingly, if you go their last 7 starts
Stafford 2-5 record 154-271 (57 %) 1706 yards 11 TD 11 INT 4 fumbles 1 lost 72.2 QB rating
Sanchez 1-6 record 89-182 (49 %) 1185 yards 6 TD 14 INT 5 fumbles 2 lost 48.9 QB rating

Way to henpeck those stats.

You could've just said: "Stafford's been playing better lately and that's cool."

The thing is, doing this sort of a comparison immediately after one has a great week and the other has a poor week may have the appearance of cherry picking for some.

And some might suggest the fact the relative quality of the quarterback stats for the two can change so much after one game, even 11 weeks into the season, suggests it might be best to simply wait until the end of the year before attempting to draw any conclusions.

I thought Stafford was the better prospect coming into the draft, and based on 11 weeks of NFL play, I think Stafford has been the more effective player in the NFL, overall. Moving forward, I think Stafford's upside is greater than Sanchez'.

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable attempting to claim anything stronger than that at this point.

Stafford's got better numbers for the season as a whole so far.

55.2% completion, 1,911 yards, 11tds, 14int, 4 fumbles, 1 lost in 8 games vs. 52.1%, 1,791 yards, 10tds, 16 int, 9 fumbles, 3 lost in 10 games. The Jets are a better team by a significant margin as well.

Right now, my biggest concern is whether the Lions can piece together an offensive line before Stafford gets knocked out of the NFL physically. He's already done better mentally then Harrington ever did.

There's something to be said of being a semi-redneck southerner and a fruity-pants pianist.

Is he married? When I lived in Metro Detroit there were all kinds of rumors that he was gay. Have you ever seen him out with a woman other than his mom or sister?

He's married to a girl that's way too hot. He just sucks at football.

Just to play devil's advocate, what's the strength of schedule? I honestly don't know.

Judging from what I've seen, Stafford's done more with less, both have made rookie mistakes (not unexpected), and I think both have huge upsides. After that, I think it comes down to the styles of the QB (mobility, pure pocket guy, toughness, etc).

Stafford scored HUGE points with me this past weekend, with the whole mutilated shoulder/winning TD pass, even though yeah, it WAS Cleveland. No, I didn't see the replay first. I saw it live first, then multiple replays, and each time I said to myself "how the hell did he get up from THAT?!" I mean, he basically said "* you, Jobu, I do it myself" and manned up. That's a quality many players lack nowadays.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Remember last year, when you said well, at least it can't get worse?
You were wrong.
Bill Ford Jr.: "Who, the Lions? mmmyeah, y'know I haven't really been following football""it's a football team, right?" :(

Sorry, I'm going to have to side will Bill on this one. Having the Lions suck means that a bunch of fans will be dissappointed. Having Ford suck means that a bunch of people will be out of a job.

That's the difference between entertainment/sports and real life.

In terms of importance to SE MI, Ford Motor Company >>>>> Lions.

Yes, it would be nice if the Fords would hire someone who could manage the Lions effectively, one who they can trust with the money. But I still have to lean with the car company over the football team.

Well that goes without saying (and he's done a terrific job for FoMoCo, if only in hiring the right person to run it). But he's the effective owner of the team, too. Would it be inappropriate for him to have some tiny little opinion on the sorry state of the team?
I can't imagine telling my clients, "you know, I've decided that my family is most important to me right now so to focus on them 24/7, I'll just ask you to hold your requests for a couple of years". I'd expect to lose my clients.

If he had the time and knowledge to hire the Alan Mulally of Football, that would be very cool. But having been run by Millen for the past year seems to have really drained the system. Not an easy position to be in....
