Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Per the Detroit News, Kyle Vanden Bosch is a Lion as well.

The front four could turn out to be very disruptive. Would've been nice to have an awesome corner out there to take advantage of errant throws.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

A great front four can make average CBs look very good. I guess that's the logic they're using. The problem is, now we need to go get some average cornerbacks instead of the Eric Kings and Will Jameses of the NFL.

And let's face it. We need help everywhere, except for QB and maybe LB. I'll take any upgrades we can get.

Van Den Bosch and the soon-to-be-acquired Corey Williams along with, hopefully, Suh on that line is pretty awesome. Burleson adds a competent receiver to the other side of the line and gives Stafford someone he can just throw it deep for occasionally.

Linebacker, offensive line and corner are what I'd like to see them get next.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

We're going to need a running back, too. They just put Kevin Smith's knee back together last fall and he may not be 100% at the start of the season.

Funny you should write that. Wojo wrote a column today about the very same thing- or at least mentioned it. Specifically he questions any RB signing if the guy is 30 or older- guys like LaT, or Taylor. Sproles would be a good choice, but SD locked him up.

I think it would be wise to sign another back up QB, too.

Overall, if the Lions can't get a decent array of picks for trading down, Suh is their guy, and that won't be too bad. It also sounds like Foote won't be back, either.

You don't think we need help at QB? Really? I'm happy with the starter, but beyond that the back-up situation, IMO, is terrible. The Lions need a quality #2 guy, and I think they need to get him in free agency.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

I'd rather get a starting CB or a LG that knows how to put his shoes on the right feet before I go looking for a backup QB.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Mediocre backup QB's are a dime a dozen anyway, and a good backup will sign to be a starter elsewhere instead of behind a guy with 5 more expensive contract years.

I agree that CB is a much higher priority. But I don't think that means you don't go looking for a back-up QB at all, nor does it mean you only work on one position at a time.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

I guess what I was trying to say was that I'd much rather get some starters in order before I go looking for backups. Fill some holes before looking for depth, if you will.

The way the NFL calls defensive PI and holding now, you're better off getting pressure over good coverage.

It does beg the question, do the Lions even bother with the DL in the first round after today's transaction? They could make the DL spectacular with a guy like Suh or McCoy, but then they have spent a first round pick and the salary that goes with signing them on a position they are already better in.

Or they could go with Davis on the OL, or better yet Haden at CB. Both would be positions that they now need much more help in. I think the Lions should be addressing their more pressing needs in the first round and save a late round pick for a depth player on the DL.

Another possibility is to trade that first round pick for immediate help on the OL or at CB.

Trading down top 5 picks is such a PITA because you're stuck paying some rookie a $20+ million signing bonus. I think they would have been better off trading down 6 of the last 8 years, but there's never a real market for it.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

If nothing else, drafting Suh would help keep him from destroying Matthew Stafford.

If the Lions sign all the crushing linemen, it's less crushing linemen other teams have to ruin the franchise QB. Hooray attrition!

Or they could shore up the O-Line and actually bother to protect him. ;)

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

I'd rather get the DT in the 1st round, even with what we've done so far. We're going to need to replace Vanden Bosch and Williams in 3-4 years max, and this is supposed to be a very good draft. I'd rather get the cream of the crop on the line right off the bat unless there's a trade-down scenario that blows our shorts off. Let's not overthink this.

Re: Detroit Lions 2009: May the Schwartz be with us.

Since Free Agency has officially started, that means the 2010 season has started. Let's get a new thread going!

I love the KVB signing today. I'd love to see them still pick up Suh though, or McCoy.

Can't find much fault in this logic. ;)

One RB I wouldn't mind seeing the Lions take a chance on in the Draft would be Joique Bell from Wayne State. Kid has always been a gamer, was pretty much their all-everything player. Might not be the fastest guy around, but if still available in the fourth or fifth round, grab him.
