Re: Death to the Incumbent!! Your guide to the 2010 primaries

Murtha's seat stays Dem.

Same two guys will face off again in November, with a higher Republican turnout likely.
Still, not sure the GOP will want to toss any more money that way, so a big win for Dems. And of course, for 50 foot Nancy Pelosi.

I'm starting to wonder here... I"m getting the impression the primary is yet to be held... supposed Linda McMahon (R-Candidate) is putting this out there and I believe she's running against another republican and former congressman. But the mainstream libs are running with this. This would imply to me that he can be replaced at this point.

Who else wants to run that's waiting in the wings to see Blumenthal fall apart? Or maybe is he a Clinton ally and so this is to sabotage that? Something doesn't seem right here.

There's a reason why it's illegal (and can bring with it fines and even jail time) to claim that you've been awarded a medal that you did not earn. This isn't illegal, but it's basically the same type of thing.

I think it's only illegal to falsely claim the Medal of Honor. I could be wrong though.

Re: Death to the Incumbent!! Your guide to the 2010 primaries

its the stolen valor act. I think its claiming any medal you didn't earn.

Good call. i didn't realize this was updated.

From wiki:

The Stolen Valor Act of 2005 (the Act), signed into law by former President George W. Bush on Dec. 20, 2006,[1] is a U.S. law that broadens the provisions of previous U.S. law addressing the unauthorized wear, manufacture, sale or claim (either written or oral) of any military decorations and medals. It is a federal misdemeanor offense, which carries a punishment of imprisonment for no more than 1 year and/or a fine; the scope previously covered only the Medal of Honor.

The trouble is, only the very worst cases (where money was obtained under false pretenses, etc.) will be prosecuted. The cost benefit ratio of prosecuting the hundreds (thousands?) of low lifes who claim medals they didn't win isn't worth it. But once in a while a lying liar's gonna get hammered.

Somebody on the grassy knoll directing the police to arrest yet another drunken Kennedy. And on election night! The horror! We need a presidential commission to investigate this. Or maybe we need a presidential commission to investigate why, after all these years, anybody cares what anybody in this family of liars, killers, drunks, rapists, drug addicts and serial cheaters thinks about anything. Oh, that felt good.

CT Sen primaries not 'til August. Filing deadline is Friday though, so Dems will have to make a decision quickly.

To be fair, I don't think any of the Bush family is a rapist.

Wonder whether the story that comes out is this was the night when the Tea Party became rebranded as Libertarian-Economic rather than Fundamentalist-Social.

Wow. You really don't understand the basic underlying concept of the Tea Party. Which is hardly surprising, since you've got them created in your mind as some kind of perfect demons.

The underlying concept of the TP, as it exists today, is anti-liberal. With a Dem in power that means anti-everything from taxes to social policy. If the TP survives until the GOP is in power, it will become strictly social policy, since they will not challenge a right wing government, and social policy is the right's evergreen gripe via convenient scapegoats like the courts, the media, Hollywood, universities, the "elite," yadda yadda.

Now all this could change if a Paulite captures (the correct word might be recaptures, since some of the TP genealogy dates back to the Ron Paul Experience) the movement, in which case they could retain their message and energy even against a GOP establishment.

But right now it's still very much the handmaid of the Republicans and the GOP is using them. They won't be truly what you seem to want to think they are unless they start protesting GOP spending priorities under a GOP administration.

Is that really so hard to grasp?

Please, continue. I love hearing your clueless fantasies about groups you've built up in your mind to be boogeymen.

From day one, the Tea Party movement has been based on runaway government - people fed up with the expansion of government and the perceived restriction of liberties under BOTH parties. The reason you think it's anti-liberal is because... GASP! Liberals are in charge right now! If the Paul win last night proved ANYTHING, it's that the Tea Party is very much anti-establishment. They proved it in NY-23. They proved it in Utah. You don't get it.

Your obsession with the Tea Party as some kind of social movement is downright laughable. Go to a Tea Party rally sometime - don't just read about it at commondreams.org or whatever lunatic fringe site you depend on for your news - and see the blend of social outlooks therein.

Re: Death to the Incumbent!! Your guide to the 2010 primaries

I've been to TP events in VA, RC, and I debate with TPers every day; friends who I work with. I'm speaking from direct daily personal experience, albeit not your objective omniscience. If you want to play the echo chamber card you are definitely talking to the wrong guy.

If you believe the TP, as it is currently constituted, would be out there screaming with a Republican in charge, you are utterly mistaken. They have core ideas of fiscal reform but they are galvanized by the same matrix of political issues that has motivated rural white conservatives for the last 20 years. Gun rights, abortion, defense of marriage, law and order, and military pride are right up there with the tax revolt.

But by all means resume your dismissive rhetoric and employ ad-hominum attack terms like "clueless," "fantasies," "obsession," "laughable," and "lunatic." That sort of tactic always indicates a well-reasoned and self-assured argument.
