It doesnt matter if he corrected it later or not, if he said he was a Vietnam Vet and he wasnt he is a lying sack of crap and should own up to it. Dont hedge your bet, dont pretend you misspoke or were misquoted, just take your medicine and try and show you have some decency. Hell, even if someone just attributed it to him and he didn't fix it a lie by omission is still a lie. Admit your mistake and move on, dont backtrack and try and cover it up it only adds to your ********* status.

If he's this pathological liar then why did he again and again stress he didn't serve in Vietnam? Or is that part of his double-secret lying strategy? Why lie so obviously even a USCHO amateur ethicist can catch you, and compound even by directly contradicting yourself to make it even easier for them?

Why lie repeatedly about flying into Tuzla in the face of sniper fire when the videotape shows a little girl with flowers? These hypotheticals would be better put to the people telling the whoppers. It doesn't strike me as a defense to say: "I didn't lie everytime the subject came up, just some of the time." There seems to be no doubt that, on more than one occasion, he deliberately misled people about having served in Vietnam.
I can only speak for myself, of course, but blowing air into a military record to advance a political career is disgusting, no matter who does it. And it seems to me there are some things we should be able to agree on, regardless of party. IMHO, this would be one.

I'm okay with agreeing with you on that, though I'll bet we'll disagree on the specifics of who did it when. I value service highly as well. If the guy lied on purpose then yes it is execrable. I'm just not so quick to the gallows with him, likely because that little letter doesn't excite me to consider his mendacity "obvious."

As someone who has actually been to a Tea Party, I don't think so. You can't extrapolate one out to a thousand of course, but guns certainly weren't in the top 5 even.
Also, since Palin endorsed Paul, I'm not sure she comes off as a loser here.
It's more of a loss for Cheney, McConnell, etc.

Region may matter. I have been to a tea party event as well (unlike most people here, I work with a majority of tea partiers) and in VA those are the big three. Of course, in VA if you go to a little league soccer game the biggest issue is going to be guns...

Agreed. Anyone who's served can tell you stories about the PFC or AFC who stops by the BX on his way home for his first leave to load up on ribbons and insignia he hasn't earned. This is to impress momma or his girlfriend. No real harm done. We've all read about various losers who "enhance" (read: makeup) a military record to get a free beer or haircut or whatever. Politicians who do it to pull the wool over the eyes of easily impressed voters are a different matter, it's beneath contempt.
The worst example I can think of (sorry for the umpteenth repitition) are the "winter soldier" lies that John Kerry read into the congressional record. Lies that slandered and smeared an entire generation of GI's. Lies that were voiced by people who had never been to Vietnam and some who hadn't served at all. But credulous anti-war types lapped the stuff up and John Kerry's political career was launched.

I know we're in the results portion of our program tonight, but before we finish our fruit cups, perhaps we should take a look at this video of Mr. Blumenthal claiming to have served in Vietnam. Unless the plain words he uses here have lost their meaning, he's a lying liar.

The sad thing is this guy has evidently been a big supporter of vets and has apparantly done a lot of good. In his damage control photo op earlier today he said he was proud to have served 6 years in the Marine Corps Reserve. Fine, then why embroider?
