D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

end of the 2nd
3-1 Yellow Jackets
goals by Firkus on the pp and 2 for Mayhew
Harren has the goal for Gustavus
GA was carrying play much of the 2nd and suddenly Superior netted a couple
Superior starts the 3rd with 1:47 left on a pp

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

4-1 as Superior has another pp goal; 2nd for Firkus from Graham and Worsham
GA spending much of the period in the box
9 to play

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Wow...rarely does Gustavus ever get blown out like this.

It sounds like the play is closer than the score and obviously the problem is being compounded by taking penalties and then giving up goals while tying to kill them.

Superior might be the best team in the west right now and I'm ok with that. Obserbear were you watching it....thoughts on UWS?

Today's win is certainly nice but over the course of this season I'd say GAC and River Falls still lay claim to that throne.

Also, what's that mean...Superior is the 7th best team in the country behind the power six in the East ;)

I said right now...they have split with RF & GAC this season..so I'd say on par with them. You mean they are like 32nd after all eastern teams right?

These guys out east! I was bored so I watched! All GA. In the first. After UWS scored there first goal, the play was even from that point on. GA did hurt themselves with penalties but the play was even. Congrats, gojackets!

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

I watched most of the game, and GAC played one of the worst second halves I've seen them play, and Superior definitely took advantage of it, especially on the power play. That being said, does anyone know why Sobczak was in goal? She's a good goalie, I'm just surprised GAC didn't stick with Justice, who's played the majority of minutes in net.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Anyone know why Justice wasn't in net...Gusties a little too confident on this one?

This is the first time that Gustavus has lost by 4 goals to a western team since Nov 3, 2007; and one of maybe 10 times ever. Other than that they lost to Middlebury 5-0 in the meaningless third place game at the Frozen four last year and 4-0 to Amherst in the semifinals 2 seasons ago.

Looking through old schedules....Middlebury has owned Gustavus over the years... 5-0 last year, 3-0 in 05-06, 4-3 & 7-3 in 04-05, 7-0 in 02-03, 5-1 in 01-02

Peters played well in net. Schultz, Mayhem, Firkus and Wiercham played well at forward. Schultz puts her self in position to score and she delivers! Totally amazed at how many shots UWS defense blocks. That is there backbone for sure. Graham has a great blue line shot like Salis of Adrian and Olson of River Falls. I haven't seen anyone rush the puck up the ice like Lane in the Ncha. She makes things happen. I notice on the power play they played 3 Defensive players, Kaskew, Graham and Lane. Once again contracts! Don't have a lapse against Marion! UWS played solid a well deserved win.

I missed most of the 1st. GA was giving Superior trouble breaking out after they scored the pp goal early in the 2nd. Superior then hit a couple of long passes and had at least 2 clean break aways that the GA keeper stoned, but the 3rd Yellow Jacket goal seemed to spell the end for the Gusties. Both teams look like strong contenders come NC$$ time, and this season is one of those "on any given night years" when you match up the top squads. I am puzzled by GA not starting Justice. Should they stumble in the MIAC tournament, I think this game was huge in terms of a Pool "C" (although the math written on the wall may show this is a 6-2 split pretty much no matter what).

I do think it is going to be a 6-2 split as well. It would be nice to see the NCAA put the best 8 in the tournament, but they will do it financially I'm sure. River Falls didnt' help themselve by losing to Lake Forest. Before that, I would have said that both River Falls and Gustavus should be in the NCAA tournament even if they lose in their conference tourneys. Even still, I would liken their loss to Lake Forest to Middlebury's loss to Hamilton. Is that loss enough to keep Middlebury out? Highly doubtful.

Granted people will argue that the best 8 teams in the country are Amherst, Norwich, RIT, Plattsburgh, Elmira, Middlebury and any 2 western teams...but the Amherst trip showed, that we can play with them...Middlebury again has a bad loss, a bad tie.

The thing that makes me more upset is that Gustavus gets to coast into hosting the western quarterfinal almost every year. They maybe lose one conference game a year, because the MIAC is so bad outside of maybe 2 teams on a yearly basis. The NCHA has consistently dominated the MIAC over the years, and our top 4-5 teams...continuously beat up on their top 4-5 teams, but we beat up on eachother as well. Gustavus coasts to a 23-2 record, where the NCHA team with a 21-4 record in much tougher competition now has to travel.

It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out this year...as the two contenders from the NCHA are 1-1-1 against the Gusties. River Falls with the 1-1 tie, Superior with the 1-0 loss and the 5-1 win.

Well Mr. Know it All if you were the coach you would know that Sobczak was the goalie in the last game against Superior which I believe was
a 1-0 overtime win. And this was the worst game GAC has played that I have ever seen.

I will say right now a 5-3 split is virtually IMPOSSIBLE given the NCAA's selection rules.

A 5-3 split means a flight in the first round unless Adrian is one of the Western teams and even they can only play a handful of East teams in the first round (IE: RIT and Elmira) to stay within the 500 mile limit.

6-2 splits will happen almost every year IMHO unless the East has a down year and the West has four really good candidates record wise...we would have a very small chance at a 4-4 split. (I mean small )

I think at some point the NCAA is going to then have to justify leaving a 1 loss western team out of the playoffs for lets say a 5 or 6 loss eastern team...and that would be hard to do.

you have Marian at 24-1, lost in the NCHA final....and you have Chatham at 20-5, as the 6th eastern team....Its going to be hard to say Chatham you are in and Marian you are out.
