Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!
I am puzzled by GA not starting Justice. Should they stumble in the MIAC tournament, I think this game was huge in terms of a Pool "C" (although the math written on the wall may show this is a 6-2 split pretty much no matter what).
I do think it is going to be a 6-2 split as well. It would be nice to see the NCAA put the best 8 in the tournament, but they will do it financially I'm sure. River Falls didnt' help themselve by losing to Lake Forest. Before that, I would have said that both River Falls and Gustavus should be in the NCAA tournament even if they lose in their conference tourneys. Even still, I would liken their loss to Lake Forest to Middlebury's loss to Hamilton. Is that loss enough to keep Middlebury out? Highly doubtful.
Granted people will argue that the best 8 teams in the country are Amherst, Norwich, RIT, Plattsburgh, Elmira, Middlebury and any 2 western teams...but the Amherst trip showed, that we can play with them...Middlebury again has a bad loss, a bad tie.
The thing that makes me more upset is that Gustavus gets to coast into hosting the western quarterfinal almost every year. They maybe lose one conference game a year, because the MIAC is so bad outside of maybe 2 teams on a yearly basis. The NCHA has consistently dominated the MIAC over the years, and our top 4-5 teams...continuously beat up on their top 4-5 teams, but we beat up on eachother as well. Gustavus coasts to a 23-2 record, where the NCHA team with a 21-4 record in much tougher competition now has to travel.
It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out this year...as the two contenders from the NCHA are 1-1-1 against the Gusties. River Falls with the 1-1 tie, Superior with the 1-0 loss and the 5-1 win.
