D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Superior completes the sweep of Stevens Point in commanding fashion 6-2.

Ninneman pulled the old strategy of pulling the goalie early in the 3rd...with about 10 minutes to go down 3-0...after about 5 minutes of the extra attacker, the pointers score two quick goals with the extra attacker, put the goalie back in and Superior scores to go back up by 2. Pointers pull the goalie again and this time Superior puts 2 in the empty net.

Can't wait for the clash with Gustavus on Tuesday night in Wessman...I'd love to be there for that one!

Final in Elmira. Plattsburgh wins 4-1 (ENG).
Tigers need EC to win tomorrow to have a chance at 1st place.
...ummm, I think we know how that's gonna work out for RIT if they have to depend on others to do their work...not happening.

Is this seriously how the strategies they play out in the Midwest? I know it's entertaining, but it speaks to desperate coaching and marginal skills in a way, or do these state schools just hate each other that much that they'd rather score a goal and lose 6-1 than get shutout 3-0?

BTW, Marian taking UWRF deep into the third and scoring the first and last goals in a tight one on the losing end of 5-3 score when the homers at RF give em the powerplay to put it away halfway through the third. 3 goals by the Sabres on 11 shots -- they are feeling their oats after getting on the board against Findlandia -- go Sabres! Bring that offense!

Just in Stevens Point. I've seen Stevens Point do this on a few occassions. It all started in 03-04 when Idalski was the coach at Stevens Point and Ninneman was his player. Stevens Point had just returned from a trip out east where they played 4 games in 5 days, tying plattsburgh and elmira, beating williams, but losing to Middlebury 3-2. (they eventually ended up losing to midd 2-1 in the title game.) 4 days after they returned they had to make the trek up to Superior for a 2 game series. Both teams were pretty good that year and it was pretty much the series to decide the NCHA title.

Game 1 http://collegehockeystats.net/0304/boxes/wwspwsr1.j16
Superior gets up 5-0 by the end of the 2nd period. Idalski pulls the goalie in the early 3rd period...knowing how important this series is. UWSP gets two goals, but thats it.
Game 2 http://collegehockeystats.net/0304/boxes/wwspwsr1.j17
Superior gets up 4-1 midway through the first. The box scores seem to be corrupted on my computer, not sure if they are on everyones...but if I remember right Idalski pulled Statz in the first...and pretty much kept her out the rest of the way.

Stevens Point got the final say in the matter however, when they beat Superior 2-1 in double OT in the NCHA championship game in Superior later that season.

I've seen Ninneman pull the goalie pretty early a few times. She did it with 5 minutes to go against Superior a couple years ago and then 10 minutes left today. I'm not sure what northhockey means by the strategy worked...I've never seen it work...as in them actually coming back and winning the game using this strategy.

The strategy worked in that they were 2-0 with an empty net for over 20 mins of play. that in itself is impressive even if they couldnt win the game.

Does anyone else not follow this line of thinking?? Or am I the only one that doesn't get it?

UWSP gave up zero EN goals when they had an EMPTY net for at least 20 mins of play. they also scored 2 goals while having an empty net. the point in pulling a goalie is to have an extra attacker and score. so the strategy of pulling a goalie (in this game) worked.

You also have to understand though that Superior didn't fully try to score an empty net goal unless they had a wide open breakaway. The bigger strategy here is to get the puck out of the zone...the last thing you want to be doing in this situation is icing the puck over and over again.

If they want to play without a goalie for a whole game...let them a nd see if they come out on top!

I do like that in that box score that its clear that "fights" broke out in the third...my favorite...ninneman gets into it with the UWS goalie!

Who cares if they didn't try to score?! The fact that they couldnt score with an open net, and let SP get 2 goals means that the strategy worked. I know, they didnt win the game. But the point of pulling your goalie is to SCORE. and most times teams dont score, instead the other team gets an EN..all im saying

Ok...congratulations you lost 5-2 instead of 5-0! or in yesterdays case 6-2.

I did find it amusing that as soon as they put the goalie back in yesterday, they gave up another goal(she was back in the net for 18 seconds and gave up a goal)...clearly they can't compete 5-5

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

CSS up 2 -- 0 over SNC early in period one from Duluth.
Edit: Now 3 -- 0, on total of seven shots. Just 3 1/2 minutes into the game..
Gibson now in goal for SNC.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Plattsburgh/Elmira 0-0 end of 1. Shots are 12-9 Plattsburgh. Elmira is on a power play to begin the second.... all according to LiveStats.
