D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Ler's face it...the OUA is the equivalent of D3 anyway. It's nice that RIT made the effort to travel to Ontario. Too bad more teams didnt do the same.

Queens, another OUA team, recently played Colgate, and that ended up 4-3 for Colgate. Laurier yearly plays a solid D1 opponent in exhibition. This year they lost 3-1 to OHIO state.

Top end CIS (OUA is one of four leagues in the CIS, Canadian equivalent of the NCAA) is usually at par or better than top end D3. Most of the rest of the CIS is equivalent to mid to higher end D3. There is more disparity in D3 than in CIS.

Agree with this. I tend to think of CIS as Div 2. The best of the CIS teams can be quite competitive with good D1 teams, but the bottom end would fit in well with D3. I would like to see more games between CIS and NCAA. And games between top D3 teams and lower D1 teams used to be more common and were always a very interesting benchmark. Especially useful for D3 teams looking to make the jump.

CIS is not D2. The best CIS teams can't beat the best D1 teams unless they catch them on a bad day. The best D3 teams can compete with many D1 teams. :)

Those are two different comparisons. In the same breath you can state: don't think D3 teams can beat the best D1 teams either, and the best CIS teams can compete with many D1 teams.

Well yes.... as you said on another thread; don't mess with words that mean the same thing. :D:)

I'd actually say this is probably not true. I'm guessing RIT, since we're using them in this discussion, would get beat byall true D1 teams..and handily by most. Of course I can say that because the theory will NEVER be tested.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Plattsburgh and Amherst are dead even after the first period at the Stafford Ice Arena in the first game of the 2011 Cardinal-Panther Classic.

Both teams have 11 shots each as well.

that was a week or so after RMU beat Minnesota on the road.

Would RIT have an over .500 record if they played a D1 schedule? Not even close, but they could certainly be competitive and win on any given day, especially against the bottom half of D1 teams they might play.

The gap between the top third of D3 and the bottom half of D1 isn't as big as a lot of people would think, IMO.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Amherst leads Plattsburgh 1-0 with a goal by Ellen Swiontowski.

14 minutes left in the second.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Has RIT ever tried playing against D1 teams?

RIT beat Robert Morris 2-1 in 2008, after two close losses the year before. (We also played Sacred Heart to a 4-4 tie and 11-3 win that season, but they probably don't count.)

I agree with you, and some of that is the nature of the game of hockey. Because there are so few plays in any game that change the scoreboard, an underdog can flip a result by producing a different outcome relatively few times during the course of 60 minutes. Robert Morris also lost to Sacred Heart that season, 4-3. In both of those upsets, RMU did not play top goaltender Brianne McLaughlin, a future U.S. Olympian. McLaughlin stopped 63 of 65 shots and was a huge factor in the Colonials' win over Minnesota. In the same season, RMU defeated Sacred Heart three times, 8-1, 7-2, and 12-0. In a game where Sacred Heart is capable of winning versus an opponent that also defeated them by 12 goals, it certainly makes sense that a better team -- RIT -- could compile wins against a similar pool of teams.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

End of 2.

Middlebury:3
Plattsburgh:1

Hogan with the lone PSU goal. Woodward has two of the Middlebury goals and Joyce has the other.

20 minutes to play in the Cardinal-Panther Classic Consy game.

Amherst battles Elmira in the championship game at 5 p.m.

Middlebury ended up winning 4-1.

Final between Amherst and Elmira is notted at one after one. Many USCHO board luminaries in attendance.

Elmira wins 3-1 with a late empty netter to seal the victory. Big weekend for the Soaring Eagles with the tie against Middlebury and win over Amherst. Ashley Ryan, Tanis Lamoureux and Tori Charron with the three Elmira goals.

I'd say EC is back folks.
